Interesting thread, I've been thinking about posting a similar thread for my 2 lab girls so I will watch this one with interest. I tried cutting out dry food and switching to completely raw, but I obviously wasn't getting it right because Millie would sometimes be constipated to the point I'd have to "assist" her, and then one day she threw up both breakfast and dinner complete with undigested meat and large bits of bone she wasn't chewing properly  So I've put the girls back on kibble for breakfast and either a chicken frame/chicken wings or lamb meaty bones for dinner. They get the occasional whole raw egg or sardines or yoghurt with their kibble for brekky. My girls (who are both 2) get fed 2 meals a day as they very much look forward to meal times! It's part of their routine. But I split a whole days worth over the 2 meals so they aren't getting fed double. Both girls are ~25kg a piece so definitely on the lean side for Labs, even with 2 meals a day (plus training treats - I don't include training treats as part of their daily allowance as they are both already on the lean side)

My Dog Just Attacked Another Dog
RubyStar replied to 4 Paws's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
No trainer here either, but this sounds believable to me. My "everyone's my best friend" Labrador is so friendly when out meeting new people, however, the times we've been out the front of my house and someone has passed our house or the neighbour came out into their front yard, she barks at them like they are a threat to our property. I was shocked at first til I realised this is probably what she was doing, defending her property from strangers she doesn't know. -
I just watched it again.... I forgot what an idiot I sound like in it

I would, except I haven't done a whole lot of scent with her lately I'll do more over the weekend and perhaps film some then if I feel she's doing any better My weekend assignment is to film some little things so I can look back on them to see how she is progressing, and of course for them to be open to constructive criticism to make my training better hopefully

I'm unable to watch all the vids at the moment being at work, so looking forward to watching them when I'm home! I'm also looking forward to trying and filming something small this weekend from my girls to add here! This is about the only video I could think of worth posting here for the time being. It's of Ruby the same session she finally "got" scent discrimination! (so therefore the session went for far too long in hindsight!) So it's far from perfect, but thought I'd share cos I was mighty proud of her that day as we'd been working on it for weeks and the light bulb finally went off!!

Ah so that's why it's virtually impossible to find it via google!! Thanks

Sounds like another owner contributing to giving Labs a bad rap....

And should have a licence to have kids...

I've heard it being talked about as well, but have never located it myself. I was meant to email someone for the address some time ago, but forgot If I remember when I'm home and noone has been able to provide it here, I'll send that email off!

Thanks dogdue We're working on the foldback drop which works better when I stand closer to her (as she hasn't the need to come forward) so we're gradually trying to incread the distance. It's a pain in heelwork too, she takes that extra step after the command and drops, so I'm having to go back to guiding her into the drop like she doesn't know the meaning of it so she has to fold back. I hope she doesn't find it demeaning me taking her back a step Re the stays - I believe they should be allowed to take on whatever position is most comfortable, as long as they stay! And this whole down stay thing where if they roll onto the other hip and in the process show "daylight" underneath their body then its a fail/points off is rubbish!

Sorry, had to come back to this to say :p Saying that though, it will probably happen to me now
-
COP here too for Novice... if I can get Ruby to not creep forward when she drops!
-
I'll try get a video soon. We worked on it last night on an upturned cake tin and she's finally getting it Yet to transition it properly on the ground... we'll get there!
-
Probably change of positions for me, as I've already been teaching that for a while and haven't the access to a broad jump for training! Ptolomy, with all this dumbbell retrieve talk it's scaring me, so I'm gonna have to bail you up one day and get you to pick our retrieve to pieces while it's still in training mode so I can get rid of bad habits quick smart!
-
Thanks guys, I will probably just stick to the recommended 30 days, then My dogs have never had fleas but I was scared to drop flea treatment in case they then got them... I have bought a year's supply already so once I run out I might just change over to the cheaper one without the flea treatment. That should save me $100 a year for both dogs Nekhbet, I think I know the cheaper one you're talking about, is it Valuheart? A year's supply is only $30! I went for Sentinal for ease of the all in one, cos I'm terrible with remembering to give all the tablets!

Latest little brag: Millie had her Intermediate obedience test last night and passed with full marks (100/100) and first place She'll be in pre-trialling next term where I've had Ruby in forever (cos it's the highest level class my club goes up to so a lot of people just stick around in that class )

Beans did really good in that video! Love how she had to check out the live figure 8 posts to make sure they were safe
-
Plastic here, I don't like very visible chomp marks in my wooden dumbell, it's a dead giveaway up front I have a mouther
-
I'm going to have to pick your brain on any new exercises I teach from now on... that's where I go wrong, watch someone else, give it a try and then I am wrong! And have to retrain it all over again I want to start teaching the retrieve over solid jump soon, too.
-
Yes I was, just with Millie though on the top oval as we had our Intermediate test. Proud to report my choccy baby came 1st with 100/100 Pssst... I think the examiner was very leanient with marking for Intermediate :p There were many SWF's going for each other nearby and she kept looking away from me and to them and she's usually all eyes, especially when I have food in my hand which we were allowed to use!

I love your left about turns TerraNik, awesome I've started working on Ruby's backend awareness to perfect her left about turns, they're a shocker Wish I had known how to train that earlier, or that I had to train it at all! I've got nothing to add at this point in time, at least nothing I am proud to share. I would like to get Millie filmed, her downs can be really speedy Unlike Ruby who takes her sweet time and takes another step forward before deciding to drop... so I'm trying to retrain that too so she folds backs :p Great clips everyone! Can't wait to watch more!

Which way they turn when they pick up the dumbbell has a big bearing when you add a solid jump into the equation. More info please!!

I think I read on here somewhere that the monthly heartworm tablets/chewables say to give them every month but it actually covers the dog for 6 weeks - is that right? So if I am giving my dog Sentinal Spectrum that includes heartworm, regular worming and flea control, would I be able to give this every 6 weeks too instead of every 4? With 2 large dogs on a single income, every penny saved where safe to do so would be a great help! But I obviously would like to know if it is safe to do every 6 weeks or not, cos if it's not, then I will be sure to give it every 4! Thanks!
