  1. Hey there all. Yesterday found me with a bright happy day and no work. So I did what I like to do....go out and play with my camera. As a thorough newbie, totally uneducated I decided to take my toy off auto and have a play. Took the toy down to the wetlands nearby and shot some pics...thanks to some herons, pelicans, ducks and a whole bunch of noisy coot wanting bread, not their photo taken. Looking over the pics I was happy with them overall although a few shots were dark (not sure why) even though I didnt to my memory change settings between those shots. I have applied active d lighting and now they look as I saw them through the viewfinder at the time. Used shutter priority setting, auto iso. Any ideas? Are there set rules when using the s or a priority I should be aware of? So saving to do a course....
  2. Thanks for that Reddii. When walking on rare occasion off lead she hasnt failed to come back to me. Id admit that I havent really granted her much opportunity offlead though. As she is the first dog ive ever had that has shown a tendancy to run off I was interested to know if other people had experienced this.
  3. Hello. I am currently training a little toy poodle bitch, born and bred on an acreage. Whe I first got her she used to bolt...running round and round the yard for 20mins. Then I could get her, because she was tired. Due to illness she started training late. She has since just turned one, passed two certificate classes at dog school (took 8 weeks) and learns new activites in a session or two. On lead she is the best worker I have ever had....Ive trained 8 dogs. However she has one "life threatening" habit, when given an open door she bolts across the street and into the parkland. No calling will get her back...that is until she is ready...then she does a perfect recall, sitting at my feet in front of me. Like she knows she cant be growled at. Im so scared that she will meet with an accident in her haste to run free. Any ideas? We start off lead at dog school this month so am I expecting too much too soon????
  4. Wow. Thats a convincing arguement for lens filters. Thought those things could only happen to me. My history with mobile phones is bad enough...but there aint such thing as a prepaid lens plan
  5. Thanks all for the input. Looks like I am going to invest in uv filters. I have priced hoya filters, they are approx 25.00. Is that a "cheap" version or suitable quality. Since the near miss with camera vs furchild I would be happier with a filter protectying the glass.
  6. Hello all. Was out there taking pics of my very excitable furchild and she did her upmost to headbutt and/or lick the camera. Just a question..would I benefit from lens filter as a safeguard? Does it affect the quality of the photo in respect of the lens it protects? If yes uv or polarised? If not can you explain why???
  7. Hey guys and gals. Thanks for all your info. My package under the tree contained a d90 several lenses and memory cards/camera bag. Had a bit of a play with the new toy.........its better than...oh ow just say its a lot of funnnnnn.
  8. Thanks rugerfly...I am not very heartened by the vid mode...reviews are not good, most say its a good thing this model does great photos! Apparently the vid mode doesnt auto focus so blur is a problem. But thats just what I read so far. Thanks for lens info as I want to start with a good all rounder lens, and save for the rest!
  9. After considering the options I decided that I would really love to have a nikon d300 (got to use the nikon d200 on w/end) Considering that, I decided that it was maybe out of my price range at this moment so it seems a go for the d90 model at this stage. Now what of the lens? On offer at the mo is the twin is lens kit 18-55 /55-20. I was more leaning to the 18-105 lens. Then I saw the afs 18-200mm lens f3.5-5.6 if ed vr. I am looking for an all rounder lens to save for better future lens. Any ideas...i want an all rounder scenery, furkids moving, portraits... Thanks for the help guys n gals.
  10. Hello again. Ive been reading, watching and looking at internet opinions, reviews and examples from all various digital slr cameras. As per my earlier post I am not much closer to finding "the one" camera Id like to part money for. I havent put this much research and effort into getting something since buying my four legged furchild.... So for a person who wants an all round camera (with a view to getting better lens in the future) with a general interest in dog photography and flora where do your loyalties lie? C'mon Ive heard so many opinions I'd love to know yours. There are only so many shopping days till christmas!
  11. Thanks all for the support. LOL @ snotchild! The reason I liked the feel of the eos450 was that I have quite small hands/wrists. And I thought it was a good entry level to play with (currently I have a digimax v50) If I go through the eos450 do the lenses keep should I want to upgrade body? In the nikon range do all lenses have compatibility through the nikon slr range?
  12. Hello everyone. I have enjoyed reading and watching your forum. So much so that the passion to get better photos of my furkids has been ignited and I want a "real camera". Just recently, my friend had a bad experience with a photography company...for her money she got average shots of disinterested dogs and not the prints she ordered. I engaged her dog with a simple digital camera in hand and got some better shots... Im sure that with more education and a better camera I could improve. So I went to the shop...Nikon or Canon. It depended on the salesperson. I fell in love with the canon450 premuim kit, with a view of purchasing more lenses. I went to compare in another shop (sale on nikons currently) and well he stopped and said Nikond90 is the go, saying the canon450 would not be satisfactory for what I wanted. He then went on to say that the canon d50 is the only canon I should consider. Help! I have set a budget of 2800. I want to take photos of my furkids on the move and my not so furry kids. I though it might be better to get an older model with cash left for lenses. What ideas do you have for an absolute beginner? Thanks.
