Just a thought but what if a breeder suddenly dies and doesn't have family who can cope with breeding dogs/cats- would other breeders step in to help ?

It happened recently in Borzoi. The breeder's family tried to get help from one source and was rebuffed, so surrendered them to the RSPCA. Then the broader breed community found out, raised funds, got them into foster care and placed them. But one was pts while at the RSPCA for not coping well with the loss and change. Had the other breeders been able to get them earlier that outcome may have been averted, impossible to say.

These giant breeds are a worry :) - Bosco is 7 months 35kgs and 77cms tall and he is still growing

Despite the law I have met a Dingo X at the local dog park in suburban Adelaide - it was very easy to pick him and when I spoke to his owner he said straight out that yes his dog was a Dingo X.

I am in no way encouraging law breaking - just saying that there is at least one here already.

The hardest part for me this time is having so many conflicting views on food and growth. Every breeder and bred site has different ideas.

My puppy is a Borzoi and at 7 months old he now weighs 35kgs and is 74cms tall ! and he still has prominent growth nodules !

The other hard part is remembering that despite his size he is still a puppy with a puppy brain.

His breeder did a great job with toilet training and he has never had an accident inside.

There is nothing like a Borzoi scream in the middle of the night to wake the household up - all except the Borzoi of course

What about a Lappie ? - looks like a very fluffy BC - mine loves kids, people and cats and is very gentle all round.

Where do you live ? it was probably Bosco my Borzoi pup- he has repeatedly stolen onions out of my kitchen and taken them to the back yard :laugh: :laugh: !

I don't think it is ever easy - just love them while they are around and have lots of happy memories.

I had to make the hard decision today because mine was in pain from HD and arthritis and sadly getting very grumpy and bitey.

Hugs to you -I would have done the same - x-rays and then you know what is going on and you will feel better if you have to make to hard decision. I did this with my old Fugly cat last year when he was diagnosed with bone cancer - after I saw the x-rays I knew that PTS was the kindest and best option.

Intelligence in dogs is interesting but is very hard to judge. For example at one stage we owned a GSD X and a deerhound. The GSD X (who we got at 7 months old totally untrained)was constantly alert and very quickly learnt all the normal dog stuff - sit,come, fetch, shake etc. She also learnt very quickly the things she was not meant to do like digging in the garden. Now the deerie who we got at 8 weeks old was totally different - he didn't learn any of the normal dog stuff sit etc despite us trying but he did teach himself to open doors and I could walk towards the back door with the clothes basket and he would (slowly of course) get up and open the door for me to go out however if I wasn't carrying anything he didn't bother. He also invented his own games that involved us - his favourite was when my OH was doing laps in the pool and he walk alongside and at each end he would ask for a paw shake, every so often he would try and trick OH by turning around and going to the other end of the pool -I'm sure he was laughing when he did it.

So which dog was the most intelligent - the one who was easily trained to do what we asked or the one who taught himself things that he thought was important.

That is great - my little Siamese used to ask to ride around on my MIL's walker - it was great motivation for my MIL to walk.

I think its a matter of the owner knowing and understanding the dog - I found it funny maybe because I have a very "chatty" opinionated spitz :laugh:

Ooooooh a Lappie :D my Lappie wasn't very interested in food as a pup -there were too many other things to see and chew !
