  1. I was bitten by a white tail on the back of my upper leg and on my ankle (2 separate occasions) we used to get HEAPS in our house in summertime except thank goodness this summer just gone we barely saw any. I had nothing more than localized itching and pain and a large looking pimple type blister with two tiny dots on it (the bite marks) and it healed over a few weeks.

I guess it depends how you react to the venom and now that I know, whether there was any bacteria on their fangs etc.

Either way I was SO glad we didn't many of the buggers this summer just gone cos it was Shylas first summer here, and the thought of her getting bitten.. no thanks

  2. My shepherd turns into watchdog at night, whining and barking at the thought of going outside cos of the possums, bats etc that set her off

Not to the extent of your dog though, I hope it's nothing too serious :D

  3. Maybe it's time to let this go. The dogs are cared for and if your daughter felt strongly enough, she'd have told her OH to take them back. You're starting to sound a little hysterical and obessed.

    What?

I am uspet that there is a BYB out there, who is selling unvaccinated dogs. How would you feel, if you bought a puppy & a week later found out it has major health issues & after 3 weeks, you have spent nearly a $1,000 in Vets bills, with no recourse. :)

Yeah I'm not sure where the hysterical and obsessed bit fits in either :D :) There's always one weird post on every thread!

  4. My shepherd is coming up to 1.5 years old, and I only just started leaving her in the WHOLE house alone for 9 hour days starting a week ago :) We used to keep her locked in half the house (a lino big area) but now she has the whole house and 3 cats for company and the carpeted lounge, our big leather couches etc. She's never really shown any signs of destructive behavior like your puppy though... I wouldn't trust her if she did any of those things :D

  5. What on earth!!! There is no WAY I am using this drug ever ever. How can it still be prescribed with such a very very bad rate of killing dogs? I know any medication can react badly with any particular patient, but surely so many deaths and even the few on this thread alone I would call 'many' is a sign? I am glad my vet has only ever given me Previcox. If I was prescribed Rimadyl I think I would go tell them to jump

  6. When you say the "3 year protocol" does that mean the 3-year booster thats fairly new? I just got Shylas first annual done and don't want to vaccinate at all for 3 years. Does that mean I titre test yearly up til the 3rd year to make sure her immunity is still adequate?

  7. No solution but my shepherd has a fascination with suckling and gnawing on dogs with long floppy ears (ie my mums golden retriever) they are SO tangly when we go to leave in the evening when we visit :noidea: I've notice her do it on another dog with similar ears

  8. Interesting! I feed Shyla 500g of raw veal/rabbit mince with a cooked egg mixed through in the mornings, and 1.5 cups of holistic bikkies at night mixed with a tin of sardines in oil and a bit of cheese for garnish. She also gets a chicken frame every second day and other treats. My mum always says she's too thin cos she can feel her ribs and her spine (she owns an overweight fat golden retriever, all her pets are loved with food lol) but I keep saying she's the right weight and it's better to be thin than more on the other side of the scale. I can feel her ribs through a thin layer of fat which I thought was good. Her hips don't stick out or anything. I hope she fills out more as she ages (she's coming up to 1.5 in a few mths). My vet said she's the perfect weight and he wishes he saw more dogs like her, and the german shepherd people at a show said she looked nice. But I see mum every week so hearing her say 'she's too skinny' gets to me lol

  9. Well your not going to get any sympathy from me.

When dog people congregate with other dog people either at training or shows or other area's where dogs congregate you can expect something to wrong.

Be it a lead breaks or dog breaks from an off lead exercise or some other situation you do your best to handle the situation with dignity.

Not go racing off to a lawyer.

Firstly contact the owner politely and discuss the matter of the vet bills.

Secondly, politely contact the club with any concerns that you have.

Give some time for them to reply to you. You may find that the person is more than willing to pay any vet fees.

You don't know, the club may have already spoken to the other party.

If you want to get yourself disliked keep going the way you are.

You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

Yes, your over reacting. What about the person that ownes this dog ?.....have you ever thought that they are so embarrased and shocked over the incident that just might just want to run away and hide. Not the right thing to do of course, infact very wrong.

How do you know the dog has not already been put down.

This was an accident in a controlled situation that got out of controll, at least wait and see what happens first.

If you get no satisfaction then go to a Lawyer.

    JMHO

Ummm she contacted the club and they are dodging and avoiding giving her answers, the owner of the aggressive dog didn't even CHECK to see if the dog her dog just ATTACKED for no reason was ok and went back to class without a care in the world, she's had warnings before, I really don't think politeness will pay off in this situation, sometimes you need to step in and show you mean business when dealing with dickheads

  10. thanks guys - Max seems OK. Now that the pain killers have kicked in he's not limping. He was friendly to 2 dogs at the Vet when I popped in to pick up some food for him and get Darren (our Vet) to say hi and make a fuss of him without "doing" anything to him. He doesn't like the barking in the neighbourhood and is showing some fear but I just carry on playing with him in the yard and I am trying not to show any reaction to his reaction - if you know what I mean?

I don't have any friends locally with friendly trustworthy dogs. My puppy school instructor from the club has 2 wonderful gentle dogs but she will be away until Tuesday next week at a show in Durban.

Tomorrow he has to go to the kennels and he's never been to kennels before so I hope that doesn't make things worse. I have to attend a funeral in Grahamstown (about 2 hours from where I live) and it isn't possible for him to come with me. This will be a whole family reunion thing (we only ever see each other at funerals these days!) and I will only pick him up on Friday. I'm not really happy about leaving him now, but I have no choice.

I have consulted a lawyer and things will be dealt with in the proper manner :mad She chose the wrong person to mess with as I don't back down! I do hope that some good will come of this and that the club deals with aggressive dogs more assertively in the future.

Good on you for taking it further!!!! Please let us know how you go

  11. I don't think they quite realize how full on puppies are, especially a boisterous full of life breed like a Labrador! I can see it turning sour when the dog chews things up and barks and causes more stress on the already busy family with a baby, big workload etc...
