OK so what is for March ???

Heheh on to the next one

  2. Sigma / Nikon 70-200 f2.8 depending on your budget- you won't go wrong

Then stick a 1.4 or 2x teleconverter on the end to get the 300 or 400mm

The 70-300 VR is also a good option but is really a consumer lens with a little bit added on.

Nikon 18-200 VR II is a good option, but AF could be an issue at the long end (not tried it on my D80)

Nikon 55-200 VR Kit lens is way too slow to AF.

There is an 80-400 VR too but it is very slow AF.

D80 (as I have one) needs all the help it can get to focus and the Sigma HSM or Nikon Pro AF-S in their 2.8 lenses were the only ones I really liked.

  3. I thought about hiring the lenses, but then they tried to push the nikon 70-200 on me, rather than the sigma.

I'd already done the tests on the lenses, and knew I wanted the Siggy.

It is down to about $900 now for the f2.8 - save your $100 to the lens... you don't need to hire it, you need to buy it!

24-70? Also take a look at the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 which is meant to be as good as the canon, and a lot cheaper :o

So much glass... so little money!

  4. That is disgusting... what a horrible BIL.

With a male and a bitch Miniature Schnauzer, I can't remember how many times we've been asked if we plan on breeding them.

The usual reply - no they are desexed because we can't afford the costs involved with breeding and caring for a litter and breeding is time consuming and a lot of effort.

It's amazing how many people think that breeding dogs is a hugely profitable business that anyone with a dog can do

  5. That's awesome! My 450d is so very very grainey at 1600 so I always shoot on a low ISO. I'm pretty sure it's me and not the camera so it's definitely something to think about!

The D80 is horrible when it goes over ISO 400 - hence why I am saving up for the D700 (or whatever the replacement is come April / May time).

However, the onboard High ISO NR sometimes work when there is a small amount of backlight, otherwise the slightest bit of cropping or PP and the blacks look :)

That is why the 2x teleconverter was purchased. no need to crop!

Also, I really like your 2nd queen of hearts shot... the little bit of leg and stocking removes the "evil" look to me, and has more of a "come and play" feel. ;) I can see what you mean though, she has good eye contact and expression.

  6. OK Spoke with CR Kennedy chap on the phone the other day, as well as other rumour sites and first talks are around $1500.

On a similar note, I got the 2x teleconverter today and promptly took it to the zoo for the comedy evening.

Suddenly my photography doors have opened yet again!

  7. Ashanali - I think that shot is really well done and very well composed.

My shot for MAN - Dave Callan during his set for Adelaide Fringe - Going Ape At The Zoo

Just for those who have been following my 70-200 discussion - this was taken with the 70-200 with the 2x teleconverter, at night with Dave only lit by the stage lights in the middle of the zoo... ISO 1600 LOVE IT

  8. Ow Im Canon... boo :(

Might be a race between you and JS on the new lens.

Only just been announced, will be a few weeks until you see prices... spoke to CR Kennedy this morning and they don't have any information.

Ordered me a 2x teleconverter for it today though to give me 400mm zoom :banghead:

Once the OS version comes out I'll weigh up the price to convert vs the imporovement with the OS, which in some reviews has scored better than VRII on Nikon's lenses, so it should be good!

I would expect it to be around $1,000 on import, $1,200 at most retailers and $1,300 at Teds/HN... but that is just a guess from me given the current price of the non-OS going down to about $850 on import.

  9. Same as most people really... chicken stock with kibble (frozen), veggies, peanut butter.... whatever is lying around that we fancy giving them, or have time to make!
