1. Brookie used to do this...whining in excitement...particularly on finishes which would cost us a point if the judge heard it ;) Trouble is I couldn't separate the whining from the finish and I was quite sure that he didn't understand it was the noise I didn't like. I didn't want to risk shutting him down so I took it completely out of obedience and worked on a trick which I didn't care about and was sufficiently exciting to elicit the noise making. For Brookie it was heeling backwards! He found this really exciting and pretty soon he started the whining...NRM OOPS and put him in the car. It didn't take long before he realised exactly what it was that caused the fun to stop.
2. I think the fairies got lost!!! Awesome Open Well done  So that evil UDX fairy was really busy yesterday flying from Vic to WA twice over in the one day. A.M trial highlight, Tux got the right leathers and was way too happy and had to tell every one. But most of the time he doesn't do this in training.. I mucked Tux up badly in the p.m trial. Just a small brag from us from the open ring as yes I threw the dumbbell straight and we ended up with a lovely pass of 199pnts
3. I am happy for you...no issue there. Just a bit disappointed in how you have spoken on this and other threads about WA trainers. Enough of the semantics... I said "not oozing with great trainers" NOT there were none. I would have continued to search WA if I had not sent an email to Steve Courtney and been totally satisfied with our progress. Why is it that some people cannot be happy that someone else is having success with their dog - irrespective of the method used??????
4. Umm... Your post 18 of this thread...
As others have noted, WA is not oozing with great trainers for "problem" dogs and if you have followed my posts you will know that I am not an inexperienced handler of GSD's. My choices of personal training were either food (Skye is not food driven in a reactive state) or to shut her down completely with a choke chain which I did not want to do. I did my homework and the results I am having with Steve's DLP far outweigh any personal training I had received
.
5. That's fair and reasonable but its not what I hearing generally from this and other threads. Or live 500km from anyone competent...
6. Not wanting to de-rail the topic but... I do take offence to the often stated comment that WA doesn't have great trainers for problem dogs and the way 'positive training' is used as a put down. I would hazard a guess that people are asking clubs for advise and not forking out for some very excellent trainers we have here. I am sure that Steve's program is excellent also and this comment is not a reflection of his training or methods.
7. To train a drop I like to start them from a stand and lure with treat between the front legs. This causes the head to drop and the elbows to go down. I click and treat low at this stage even though the dog hasn't gone down completely. Progress to a lower body position and at some stage the bum will go down...click and give multiple treats in the down position. Work towards putting it on a verbal and then if you want, you can change your hand signal.
8. What a gorgeous pic Absolutely stunning
9. Where's the like button???? Thanks Ness and Melody :D
10. I've had a lot of success by talking the dog through it... be firm but fair.... clippers in position "I'm going to do your nails now..."are you ready?" clip... next one..."are you ready?" clip Honestly it works :D
11. Thanks Ptolomy and Pax I reckon Cider's going to be over that bar in no time :D
12. I know people who have rescued camp dogs and I also know its a very different community from what we normally experience. I can ask if you like what their take on it would be??? My suggestion for the moment would be to manage him VERY well.... Dont get me wrong. Im distraught over him hurting a dog. I never wanted it to happen and never want it to happen again. It's just that one particular dog wasnt a fabulous dog. I wont be living in a community forever, so i need to know what to do to ensure it will not happen again.
13. Goodonya Beth Full marks for keeping going! Like us, sometimes dogs need a break and it can do wonders
14. Popping bottle opened and being consumed....you?!!!?
15. UDX fairies were absent today but Brookie worked beautifully...full of enthusiasm so I was really pleased. He came away with a win in the morning Open 198, and a win in the afternoon UD 197 Both UDX rounds were really lovely but failing judges scent in the morning (very windy with cloths very close together) and he didnt go all the way down in the positions in motion in the afternoon. Got Multiple retrieve in both trials...Yay!!! Congratulations to Ptolomy with Scoota winning the morning UD trial and Cider Bear putting in two lovely Open rounds with a first and a second place. Good girl!
16. I have three... the Silver Eagle, a chamois type and a purple Cool Champion. IMO the Cool Champion is the best one. It also doubles as a warm coat in winter so long as you don't get it wet.
17. Naughty naughty puppies!! At least yours is a baby and has puppy licence ;)
18. Bloody puppy!!!! I've just cleaned up a whole dozen eggs Zac pulled off the kitchen bench onto the floor!!! I've never had a dog this tall and the things he can get up to is amazing!!! grrrrrr!
19. I think its a good idea. Not everything is an emergency but if you think bloat, blockage, snake bite...just off the top of my head. Others will think of more but when you are panicking it would be a good place to start.
