did you get a breakdown of whats included and how much for each thing? might be easier to compare that way or se whats so expensive - if it is?
-
ok ive read some of the rules MrsD posted - thats more what i remember but i couldnt find it! we did train with a good trialling club and hes pretty good at all the ccd stuff - i think it must have been the ccd i was thinking of that they introduced early last yr?... hes also used to being 'in the ring' from CC so should be no probs there. i think most of the info i was looking for is in the rules - as i said hes pretty good but i needed to know where i need to work in the next couple of months before these trials. personally i would rather waste $10 in entering him if im going to drive to the show anyway as it will cost more than that in fuel anyway, even for me to just go and watch - and its all practice... weve done the figure of 8s and weaving - ccd doesnt look very technically difficult!

Thx for the replies - i looked up most of the info last yr when i was thinking about doing it over the winter - i thought the novice was the new class? ill rea the rules! - ive found the new Dogs NSW rubbish for bing able to find information/documents! What about commands? can you reinforce a command in the basic class? no food/praise is no probs....

Hi Guys i think i might be interested in obedience trialling my boy - im a member of RNSWCC and he has been CC titled so thought the dual would be a good assett and quite fun. i know we need to start in the novice class and i attended a trial my old club ran last yr so know roughly what one looks like (altho i was stewarding UD...) i have the list of 'tasks' for Novice but its just that - heel on lead (can u use any collar - ie a prong or should it be flat) i presume they tell you where to go - turns and the such - how long is that for? stand for exam - onlead? no probs do they let you mouth etc same as a show ring? heel free - presume this would be the same as heel on lead without attached - but they tell you where to go...? stand stay - how long? at a distance? recall - how far? from a sit/stand/drop? 1min sit/down stay - in close proximity i presume on lead? i know i could go to trial to watch these things but OT arent really all that common/or easy for me to get to - so i would tend to rather just enter and see how we go!! but would like some more info first! i dont want to look like im completely unprepared! there are 3 in this months gazette i think i could attend between feb and march....which should give me enough time to brush up specifics anyone care to help me i do go to obedience training (local club) with my girl but i dont think theyre into trialling...

ooooo me me me.... i bought a dremmel over the christmas break for nails.... you need to make sure that whatever tool you buy it has a low speed setting (~5000rpm) otherwise it will get too hot on a nail in use. (i found many of the cheaper ones dont) i found that the little golf cleaning kit (AA batteries) it cordless, little lightweight is fab - it come with just 2 heads ( for cleaning golf clubs!) so if this is all you want to do (the dogs nails) then this is fine - then by the drum sanding bit and the fine sanding papers all up about $40 i think and will last a lifetime :D Mav hated the clippers and i was amazed/shocked/stunned he just laid down on the floor and let me file them!!! ;) i thin he actually enjoys it ????!!!!! clippers went inthe bin same evening.... ETA link to kit: Dremel golf cleaning kit where to buy - most good hardware stores - i got mine a in a little local mitre 10 - only coz my bunnings didnt have this 'kit'... normally a cordless dremel is about $170...

your welcome to ring my old vet Ian Russ at 4paws neutral bay to see how much they might charge...hes a very good vet and not the cheapest or most expensive! as i said i think a canine tooth would be more expensive anyway....
-
Hi ruthless Mav had a broken P1 tooth extracted a couple of yrs ago (as well as some other work - result of a park fight) but i would expect a canine to be more expensive as the roots would be deeper how big are the dogs anaethetics are generally quite expensive. those prices sound reasonable to me for the work involved... i looked at getting Mav capped - was told really expensive and i was told it wouldnt last more than a couple of year and he may have to go to melbourne to get it done!
-
only just seen this thread - towards the end of last yr i notice a lump between the toes on my boy (i dont have any pics unfortunately) but was hard a little pussy and painful when i squeezed but fine otherwise he had been licking/chewing at it. off to the vets - who put him on basic antibiotics for an infection didnt know what it was - no change after a few days, back to the vet under for a biopsy - possibly something more sinister (*panic*) pathology result came back as a bad fungal infection - different antibiotics which did the trick - but appears he may have the same thing on a back foot this time i noticed a few days ago but smaller.... My boy is insured so i let them do everything to sort things out - and costs me nothing!
-
our girl was done just before christmas - within 24hrs she was running round like nothing had happened - even when i forgot to give her the pain meds!! :opps: see how he goes he will only be as energetic as he feels and prob a little sore for 24hrs. my vet shaved - heaps! it will take forever to grow back! nevermind he used dissolvable stitches so no need for a return trip..
-
my 2 sleep prob around 18 hrs a day - get hyper in the morning when i get up and when i get home from work for about 45 mins then sleep all the rest of the time sometimes they play with each other at other times but not as full on - yep also the heat/humidity really takes the energy out of them
-
there have been some good replies here. I too believe they are playing - i dont know Poms but i had 2 pups at my place for a while a couple of months back and they play/rough house all the time - i tend to assume if there is no blood drawn it is PLAYING - puppies have to learn how to act around other dogs and this kind of 'playing' makes them aware of the size bite strength etc. I would suggest that you may like to start to seperate them for periods of time tho as suggested with crates or puppy pens - this gives them a break from each other and makes sure that U will be boss not either of the pups. 2 puppies can be very difficult to raise together - as often the bonding between the 2 is stronger than the bonding with the owners which can cause obedience/seperation problems later. And as said aove you cannot determine who will be 'boss' they will decide between themselves and if you dont desex them i expect you will see some nasty fights as they reach maturity.

Mitochondrial Dna, Line- And In-breeding
Akitaowner replied to UltimatePup's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I know of a few different physical traits that are said to indicate temperament eg an akitas tail curl/set the tighter the more difficult to train/stubborn! i would expect traits that are inherited together are probably found to be in the same region of the genome. This means when the meiosis (fertilisation) takes place and the exchange of genetic information occurs by allelic recombination as mentioned by Calleich :p. As the strands of DNA cross over break and recombine in different places if genes are located together they will more likely be inherited together. This is often why white colour in some breeds is also associated with deafness.... very interesting topic  (im a molecular biologist and work in genetics!!) -
yes check out my deck!! - Mav had almost finished blowing when i gave him a bath and look what happens! - i used to groom him on the kitchen table in a little sunroom with no other furniture! - its good when they are little as its too high to jump off - he would now but will sit or lay for me to do it now so its ok. if theyre are on a table and carry on like a pork chop just ignore and (providing he doesnt jump off) wait for him to settle - he will soon learn the easier he makes it the quicker it will be over! You can always tell where the sammy people have been on a showground after a show
-
Wow very cute!! a little mop sounds like he is starting to settle in and get used to your routine Just remember you are the boss and he IS a DOG!! Reward wanted behaviour with a pat/play/treat and simply ignore the undesirable (be aware that telling off can also be a 'reward ' for some dogs as they have your attention!) - if you apply that to everything he will be a dream and very obedient :D
-
my boy does that - he used to stand next to the bath and stick his head in the shower - he used to push the shower screen away so he could lick the water, so it ended up all over the floor! arrrhhhh gotta love those kinda antics
-
puppies take a while to settle in to a new home they may go off food for a couple of days - he wont starve himself make sure you offer the food eventually he will eat. dont keep offering special treatment or hell have you cooking him roast dinners everynight before too long do some more reading on here about crate/pen training if you havent already - it could help a lot with sep anxiety and not letting him become your 'shadow', once you leave the house he will cry.... he needs to learn that it is ok to be alone and you will return. leaving him for increasing time is great but i would suggest you confine him to crate or pen to ensure he feels safe and cant get into trouble.... keep asking Qs thats what DOL is for :D
-
Hey SM i went down to 2 meals at about 4 months just give a little more at each of the 2. i like to keep pups more on the lean side - especially important with larger breeds so err on the side of less is better. i also skip a dinner meal once a week, i feed barf and its good to give their tummys a rest once a week yes i had to get used to feeling Mav's balls even now he gets a bit uneasy/startled when someone goes for a grope!! :D
-
we have had quite a lot of christmas beetles too - they tend to fly in the door as soon as it is open! much smaller than cicadas! im ok with bugs usually but cicadas are terrible they dont even fly in a predictable way so you can avoid them :D one flew in my kitchen and i couldnt catch it so just threw a towel over it and left for OH to deal with!! i think the wet last week killed a lot there seem to be a lot of bodiews around in our yard!
-
Hi J@Smum i didnt have a collar for my girl but i guess it depends onthe individual dog - she was up and acting normal the 24hrs after the op running around and playing no probs. she just needed to sleep off the rest of the anaesthetic somewhere warm and quiet - so she was in the puppy pen for a few hours. some dogs however will need completely different treatment.... are you home during the day? i would suggest trying not to leave pup unattended for the first couple of days until they settle and you can check on them.
-
i would visit a few shows and speak to YOUR breeder she will be able to tell you what his faults may be (they all have them!) i had never shown before i got my boy - i titled him but i basically got bored of showing not really my thing - thought about it with our girl but we ended up choosing for temp not structure (we couldnt live with the whinging the pick bithc was giving us!!) i still thought i might put her in the ring but realistically couldnt be bothered! so we got her desexed this week and thats the end of that! my boy is still entire and i have no probs with him - hes not been 'used' yet and marks more than desexed i think but nothing more... something else we considered was council registration (should be done before 6 months old!)- cost goes up by $100 if undexed so does boarding kennel fees etc...
-
i think it was more that maybe her adult teeth were physically bigger/longer therefore when using the same amount of pressure (gently with her baby teeth) she was mouthing too hard and hurting me if that makes sense - i dont think there is much difference between 'sharpness' just size and pressure area! (my boy had his canines filed at about 8 months due to damage from an attack, so his are rounded anyway :D)
-
yep they grow really quick - i havent really noticed my girls - shes 5.5mo and a bit of a chewer anyway :D ive been checking hers fairly regularly and a good look when she yawns in front of me! yep back teeth came thru then the front she was desexed a couple of days ago and i asked them to check everything was ok with them (she wriggles when i look ) yep all good she was never off her food or particularly sore in her mouth so if i hadnt been looking i would prob not notice... i think her adult teeth felt sharper??! - maybe she needed a bit of time to get used to them and mouthing gently! all good now!
-
Rogues fine was running round like nothing happened last night (despite us forgetting to give her her painkiller in the morning! i think the vet did a great job (it was quite expensive) you can hardly tell shes had anything done (except the shaving!) no external stitches and she looks and i presume feels fine now, no soreness or redness or lumpy scar she looks like it was done a week ago! :D!
-
It was along day OH rang at about 4 and said he had locked his keys in the car :p so i had to make a mad dash home to collect him from the shops and rogue from the vets before they shut! yep she was fine - quite awake when we picked her up about 6 a bit sore and quiet (not her usual bouncy self) she threw up a little when we got home but ate a small dinner later and was fine and she was good through the night. weve got dissolvable stitches ;) she should be all fixed in 14 days  she looked like a little space cadet laying out on the deck while we were making dinner shes on her own today (with Mav) she didnt seem to fussed by the wound - theres actually nothing to see not even stitches! so i dont think she will be licking or anything good luck for next week lilyW

Is Their Anyone Out There With An Easy Going Dog
Akitaowner replied to Rascalmyshadow's topic in Puppy Chat
thx for the explaination - i can understand how difficult thing would be!! if u were in sydney my boy loves the littlies too - i used to foster JRT! maybe you could ask at the vet - our local has puppy socialisation where basically the owners sit on chairs around the edge and the puppies play etc. Could someone else take pup to some obedience classes? they arent too expensive (mine is $6 a week) but in the city they used to be $3? just some thoughts ;)
