  1. PS. What about trying to advertise or do a story in one of the Canberra Weekly type magazines?

    Thanks Rae

Hadn't thought of that one, will get on to it today.

Fiona on Pet Tales on 2CC this morning mentioned it as well, I would have gone on myself but was just too upset, it is just so bloody hard, Janet her carer is just not coping at all, it was Kelseys 2nd birthday yesterday and I was so praying that she could come home then.

I will get in contact with the other stations tomorrow as well as a lot of people listen to the ABC and other than commercial stations, I tell you we will never give up.

  2. Kelsey is still missing and in the area I live! I did a drive around this morning but nothing. There are posters up everywhere so hoping they work like they did for you dogmad :crossfingers: . Her carer is devastated.

I had 1,000 posters done today and they will be put in with the junk mail and delivered to houses in the area on Monday, hopefully that will prompt people to have a conscience and make the call, there will also be an article in the Canberra Chronicle during the week, rang a reporter this morning and she will get back to me on Monday as well, our only comfort is hoping that the person who has her is looking after her.

Kelsey would not have gone far, twice she headed back down her street and a well meaning neighbour ran towards her and she turned and took off back out of the street  Janet her owner is just gutted and is not sleeping, she is a mess.

Kelsey needs to come home now where she belongs.

  3. I do have a lot of small dogs including 7 of my own, 2 are crated when I am out, one Malt who just barks all the time when outside, the other because he is so tiny and it is for his safety, the others I crate most of them when out, they are fine as they are crated at night and they are fed in there as well so they are used to it, I usually put 2 in each crate and they are fine.

I would never leave the pack, which can be over 10 small dogs here at any one time out together I think it is asking for trouble.

  6. Ditto what Maree said too about boarding. I have just had someone ring a little while and ask me do we do "boarding" for two weeks and this isn't even a former foster. Just someone out of the blue. I did tell them there were plenty of commercial boarding kennels in Canberra. She didn't sound surprised. Obviously hoping a rescue would just look after her animal/s for free....

I do get a few calls from people wanting boarding, when I say that we charge the same as kennels they hang up, they think we will do it for nothing :mad:mad

  7. I have done the same by offering to take care of Star if there is ever an emergency or the new family want to go away on holiday.

Her new Mum told me she felt guilty taking her from me as she could tell I was very attached - which is part of the reason why I am trying to give them space and not appear too clingy.

I think it is a good thing to care and want to know the dog is settling in OK - I have decided I will give a quick call tonight and then leave things alone for a week.

I ring the next morning to see how the dog settled overnight, if all is well with the 2 dogs getting along at the initial meeting I then "might" ring the "occasional" new owner say after a week and then I leave them alone.

I don't want to annoy the new owners by ringing 4 or 5 times in the 2 weeks.

You have to be careful when offering to look after the dog if they go on holidays, I have one person who expects my carer to take the foster when they go away 4 times a year, they just presume she will look after the dog, which she does, but they NEVER even give her box of chocolates and it can be for 4 weeks every time, it puts a strain on her when she already has her own 4 dogs and 3 fosters of mine and then another, they don't have to pay for boarding.

  8. Spot on Hardys Angel, this group will be long gone though there will be fallout for years and years to come.

There has been another dog attack. This time the dog attacked two on lead dogs and bit a child. Melanie Norman picked the dog up and as usual they disapear off the face of the earth.

I hope the person who bought the dog from PR takes legal action against Melanie Norman, this could be one way for her to be investigated and stopped from doing what she is doing.

  9. Just make sure she knows that it is a good idea to keep new foster cats seperate for a wek or two at least to let them settle and to make sure they aren't harbouring any illnesses. But its also very important to understand that many adult cats hate other adult cats, and may never be able to live harmoniously within a home with each other. Cats are very different to dogs, and sometimes no amount of patience ot careful intros will make them get along.

Thanks for the heads up but Just Andrea is a very experienced foster carer of cats/kittens and dogs she is after all a carer with CPR :D

  10. Yes dog mad you are asking if 'someone' who is in perth can go and check someones house and yard. It seemed like you have asked for anyone on the forum who could help. If the request was for an official of a perth rescue group would have thought the request would have been for a perth rescue to contact you re assistance in a matter. Clearly your intentions are to make sure all is good for the dog but you wont know anything about someone saying 'yeah i'll do it' out of the blue with no other connections to people you know in real life.

I cannot see why provided photos that correlate to what you can see on google would not show if the yard was secure.

You have no idea who I am and what I do then. I have been rescuing for 8 years. I was expecting a Perth rescue group to contact me - I didn't get off the last bloody banana boat so I'll thank you to take your attitude somewhere else. If you want to discuss what I've been doing for the last 8 yrs and how i operate, let me know by pm. I have used Google photos in the past but in this case in particular - not that it is any of your business - it won't do.

And I ask you again - do YOU know the address of this potential home, which suburb they live in even? No, because i didn't post that as you incorectly stated.

I will back dogmad on this, the requests here on DOL for home checks interstate are done by people who have been listing on DOL for years, the ones who put their hands up are either rescue people or people who are trusted here on DOL and have a reputation, we do know each other, if you are talkng about an out of the blue person who has listed a couple of times then that is different. I ask the person to take photo's of the people and their fencing, anything really so I get a feel for the home/family. There are 2 issues here, 1. can you trust the person doing the home visit, 2. and the new owners, we do get a feeling during the phone conversation with both people.

We also ask the potential new owner if they are ok with someone coming and doing a home visit and every one that I have had done interstate have been great homes.

I will and have rehomed to property's where you can't see the fencing and this is not a problem, the dogs are inside or in an enclosure with shelter when the people arn't home, the dogs are inside/outside when the family are home.

Also remember that the new owners can also tell us if they wern't happy with the person doing the home visit, so it goes both ways.

I only rescue the smalls and I know if the dog I am sending is going to get along with the resident dog, I don't have to make sure the dogs get along before hand I know they will before I put the dog on the plane.

The longer you do rescue you acquire skills to know what is right and what is not regarding a potential new home.

There is nothing wrong as I mentioned with asking on DOL if there is someone interstate who can do a home check with full permission from the prospective owners

It is good to ask questions but they do annoy the crap out of us sometimes when people don't accept what we are saying, which is based on years of experience, heartache, seeing abused and neglected animals, this is what is important to us all in rescue and we will NEVER send a dog interstate that we are not 100% sure it will work, which it has in my case every time.

  11. She must be so cold :( This wind is icy and really stirring up all the animals. Fingers crossed she gets out quickly.

Canberra Pound is pretty good, they have blankets now for the dogs, also the floors are heated and they have a door that they close so there is little draft getting in to their bed area, although it has been blowing a gale for most of today and is still going now.

She will be safe, will wait to see her temp notes before the carer makes a committment.
