  1. It takes my fosters to learn their name in 10 minutes, as long as I use happy sounding high pitched noise, making sure they are looking at me when I say the name. I sometimes have them on my lap and have their head in my hands and looking at them use the high pitched sound again, I put them on the floor and then call their name and they react, then repeat it again for the next few minutes.

  2. I have a lady in the ajoining townhouses and she has her very fat Jack on her lap, I have rung the police twice and all they say is "are you willing to go to court to say you have seen her doing it" I said yes and have heard nothing back.

I thought they would, at the least, speak to her to say that some people have seen her with him on her lap, but obviously they haven't.

I have told her many times that it is illegal (I'm in Queanbeyan NSW) she says that she is only going to the shops and he loves sitting on my lap  (this is from a 65 year old woman). I respond by saying that it ain't much fun when the dog is squashed and probably killed  against her air bag when she has to stop suddenly. She said that won't happen because I am only going to the shops, what, she doesn't think it will happen or it will only happen on the highway :mad:mad

  3. Correct post surgery care is important so we only have our dogs with specialised carers until the stitches come out. It works well for us & probably saves us a lot of trouble in the long run. It does sometimes make the whole process slow because we can only take dogs if there is a one available.

She was desexed mid March (approx a month) and my vet doesn't do stitches so there wasn't an issue with them, she was only sent to my carer 10 days ago and there was no sign of it, so obviously it just happened overnight and then reduced the next night.

    All is well

  4. If it's soft, see a vet... if it's hard, it could be internal scar tissue from the desexing and will probably flatten out over time. Have seen similar in pups who wouldn't stay quiet (ie. not play like loons) after desexing...

I don't see any redness or anything that may indicate infection or the like...

Thanks guys, I went back to the new owners and had a look myself and was told that it had gone down overnight (am a bit annoyed that they didn't ring me and tell me that as I had to go back over the other side of Canberra at least 45 mins) it is what you have said tdierikx (the pics didn't look like it was near the suture part, but yes it is, so will send them some antibiotics (will post these as opposed to go backing again myself) I have had a few of these lumps on other dogs so knew what it was as soon ans I saw it.

  5. First off...im very sorry to the dog owner and the little dog, no one should have to go through something like that

As to the attack. I am an investigator and the first thing I would ask is "who started the dog fight" Did any see the beginning of the fight"

That is very important. Do we know the bigger dog started it? I have investigated many incidents where a smaller dog started the fight and come off second best. That sort of evidence is important.

Yes, the rescue group should disclose all known history to any potential owners. As we know the general public tend to be on the naive side when it comes to animals.

could someone please PM me the name of this rescue group and I want to make sure they do not operate in my LGA

From what we know "there was no fight" I have been told it was a Staffy who killed a long haired Chihuahua approx 2-3 kilos, dogs do that, I had a foster dog (Jack Russell girl 2 years old) who killed one of my own dogs 2 years ago, a Maltese boy 12 years old, my boy did not start a fight, the Jack was dog agressive and killed my dog, it's as simple as that. A staffy and a Chihuahua is not a good mix.

I don't care who starts the fights, we are not talking about 2 blokes in a pub brawl here, we are talking about 2 dogs, they don't think like humans, if a dog attacks and kills another dog it should NEVER be rehomed at all, some people have said "well it is a nice dog in every other way so I will rehome it as an only dog" that is so irresponsible, how can you be sure that the dog will NEVER get near another dog in their life, it has to get out to be walked, it will come across other dogs on the walks, what if it gets out of the yard and kills another dog.

I have had to put a few smalls to sleep over the years because they were dog aggressive, I worked with them for a certain amount of time, some made it but some didn't, we in rescue cannot save them all, we have to remember that most of the dogs in the pounds (especially the country pounds) are there for a reason, country pounds are not your sweet, lovable, family dogs who have slept on their owners, kids beds, most of them are from places where they have been neglected, abused, left them to their own devices.

I would like to know if PR are getting the vet work done on the dogs that they are getting out of the pounds.

Can we stop calling them a rescue group as it really is an insult to the rest of us who put the animals before the $$$$$$$

  6. Hind sight is a wondderful thing, if i could go back & change things this would definetely be one of them. Again it was a poor choice on my behalf. Ispoke to the head of this organisation within half an hour of the incident & was still in shock so my decision making process & rational thinking were compromised.

To clarify when i said i wanted to keep it quiet i meant i didnt want it plastered all over facebook for my kids to see, I didnt mean for them to keep it from potential adopters.

I was unaware of my option of how to deal with this, i was unaware i could report this to council & the rescue group in question didnt explain my options to me at all. The rescue group are trying to claim that i adopted the dog & they just took it to help me out. Let me clareify the dog was never in my name & i was only ever a foster carer for this dog. I have since learnt what a bad reputation this rescue has & can tell you it is well deserved!

This whole experience has taught me a valuable lesson in the hardest possible way :-(

What was the dog that killed your baby?

  7. I know Pets at Peace here in Canberra use a crematoriam near Mittagong, I don't know of any pet crematoriams in Canberra, does anyone else?. Depending on the demand all my pets have taken at least 10 days to come back, I would like to know of the service where they come back the next day.

  8. This is when I had just started out rescuing, I now have vinyl floors. Notice there are no dogs in sight, also from memory this was done by a couple of dogs under 5 kilos.

  9. I have used Pets at Peace here in Canberra and cannot fault them, I have had many fosters cremated plus my own over 10 years.

Tony the chap who operates Pets at Peace is just the nicest man, very caring, loving person.

Am really surprised that Vehs found him to be awful, he is the only one who picks up and drops off, he does have a lady now helping so maybe it is her and not Tony that she found awful.

  10. I would love to know where he goes as he's my baby & this way I could always check on him

Once you rehome a dog you sever all ties to that dog, I don't think I would like the old owners having access to my new dog and it is not fair on the dog either.

    Just my thoughts

  11. I would love for someone to assess her properly. When she first came to us, she wouldnt walk on a leash without pulling you off your feet, we had several private lessons with our trainer who basically, after seeing what she was like when other dogs were around, suggested we PTS as there are many other lovely dogs around.

    PS thanks

I am not judging you, you have tried to help Sage, but, when we ask the professionals for advice and they assess the dogs and give advice, we need to take their advice, they are the experts.

I have done just what you have done and tried to help the dogs rather than take the experts advice, but, in the end the dogs have had to be pts, so for the last couple of years I have taken their advice, as all the experts say, while you are trying to save one who has issues many really nice dogs will die.

This is what rescue is all about.
