  1. It works both ways, the breeder really should, and I feel is obligated to find out where his/her pups are going to. At the same time, I don't like to be pressured to come and have a look quickly because you might miss out. That puts me off completely. In the breed I have, miniature schnauzers, there are rarely any to be rehomed because most breeders check out the prospective buyers and that can't be a bad thing. there are not an endless supply of pedigree pups, many may have to wait 1-2 years. I would advise people to come and take a look asap also, rathere that than tell them it will be another year or 2, so the buyer goes to PP and gets one from there. Well, somehow, I got the feeling that I was being pressured, and I wasn't asked if I knew anything about the breed as most of the other breeders I spoke to did. I waited almost 2 years for my first miniature schnauzer, and all I wanted was a companion. This breeder that suggested I come asap is known for this pressuring, and I am grateful that I stuck to my gut instinct. She advertised 1 puppy that she wanted to but decided not to keep because of space restrictions, and when I 'phoned to find out the sex of the puppy, I was told I could have my pick of either and there were several to choose from. The alarm bells went off then!!!! No doubt she has no trouble shifting her puppies and good luck to her, but when I buy a puppy I want to know that I will get support in the years to come, and I didn't have that feeling with this one.

  3. It's not so much about the cost, but the fact that I think we over vaccinate our dogs. My vet once let slip that if she didn't do yearly shots, and the owners thought the dogs were outwardly well, she wouldn't get to see them as patients. I do believe in periodic health checks and I do take them in just for that purpose.
  4. From what I understand, the test is performed in the USA and takes about 2 weeks for an answer. That's only if you want the Hepatitis component done, I believe. Our Titres for Parvo and Distemper were done locally. Could you give me an idea of cost for the titers? I have been quoted from one vet at $250 and $180 from another.

  6. My young dog Jasper was 2 last September and is due for his vaccination. I am undecided as to what I should do. Should I titer or should I opt for the 3 yearly shot. My own vet, as many in my area do not know about titers and doesn't do 3 yearly vaccinations. She opts for the annual. On the other hand, I take my older boy to a homeopathic/holistic vet who will do the titer test, or the 3 yearly vaccination. What do you think I should do?
  7. Sometimes we can be bit precious. We as dog owners need to understand that not everyone knows the so many different breeds around. Anyway, what's the difference if the breed is incorrectly named? I don't think anything bad is meant by their innocent mistakes. Sonia
  8. Arrow, I have two small dogs, miniature schnauzers in fact, and I can tell you that just because they are small and walked in off leash areas, they are NOT allowed to do what they want. They too have to obey me and abide by any laws. It seems many large dog owners have a thing against small dogs. In my lifetime, I have had dogs ranging from a pekingese when I was a child, scotch collie, 2 great danes as single dogs, a standard schnauzer and now two miniature schnauzers, so there has been a vast range is size. I am not one of these owners that won't allow my dogs to socialize and my minis play with all sizes at the park, given the chance without any problems. There are times that owners of larger dogs don't seem to care if their dogs offend like the time a fellow walking a large boxer, allowed his dog to jump on my 12 year old 8kg. mini and said that his dog wouldn't hurt mine. Perhaps not intentionally, but accidentally was a distinct possibility. He got quite abusive when I asked him to pull his dog aside and continue on his walk. He just couldn't get into his head that his dog was perhaps 3 times the weight of mine, and I didn't approach him on my walk, he approached me. I would also report this woman to the council and be wary of taking the same route as you may run into her again.
