  1. A girl at work, her parents just bought a puppy for V Day.

Pugalier from a petshop for $1OOO

I nothing against cross breeds but the price is insane :(

Wow the same price as my purebred husky, from a GOOD breeder

I bet the purchase price didn't include

    Desexing

    Microchipping

and ongoing support from the breeder

It's sad that some people just have no idea they could get better dogs for their money

  2. Wow, thats such a beautiful story. :(

Random question, Obviously afgans would do quite well in hot temperatures. But how about in the winter. Do their coats help keep them warm at all, or what purpose does the long coat serve?

  3. So my boyfriend and I are moving in two weeks. Due to the fact we have limited money we are going to have to do the move ourselves.(think big trailer).

Anyway Esky is 12 weeks old so has entered / will soon be entering her fear period.

What kind of things can I do to make the move as easy on her as possible?

Probably a dumb question, but I know how important the next few weeks are in terms of her development

  4. Ive been using Esky's name a lot. Probably too much. But I'm teaching her to focus on me. I want the word "Esky" to make my dog look at me.

Do you give him a reward/praise each time you looks at you?

Do you get bored of saying her name?

Sorry about all the question, but I do find all this interesting.

When i train Charlie.. i find that the less I talk, the more focus he is on me. because he has to watch me to see what the next command is.

    Yep

    At the moment Esky= focus

So i say Esky a LOT

  5. She's microchipped as well

I mean speaking personally if I saw a lost dog with a collar I would call the number on the dogs tags

Whereas if i found a dog without one I would have to take him somewhere to get scanned..

I dunno i guess I'm just overly paranoid. In the end I know that if someone really wants my dog they could just take her, end of story.

But we all hope that will never happen

  6. Esky has been wearing her collar since the moment we got her.

I don't want to risk her getting away and having someone keep her because shes a 'stray'

I would say just let your pup try it out and make it very rewarding to wear a collar. Lots of treats. You shouldn't have a problem then

  7. Oh that Kong stuffing in a can

I was put off by the fact they had puppy flavoured :o

I totally got the wrong idea there

Ive never tried it though. Perhaps it's good.

I put the Kong Ziggies in her kong. They are solid but chewey things, with little bits of mint to freshen the breath.

IMO they smell like fish. My first husky Didge hated her Kong and the ziggies, what a waste of money. But Esky loves the things. She's even dug up year old ziggies in the yard.

(yeah apparently they don't bio degrade ) So if you want to try them out don't buy a whole pack first up. If Mya hates them it can be a huge waste of money.

Kongs can be filled with anything you can think up, so don't feel too limited. I find some of thier cookies and pastes excessively expensive.

Treat balls are good too to keep your dog occupied when your not around. (particularly if you don't feed them before going out)

As far as food goes it all depends on what kind of diet you want to follow. I like to feed raw foods. But I still have kibble and organic bickies on hand for treats.. I don't want to be giving out raw chicken rewards every time she gets a behaviour right

If your looking at feeding raw food, have a look around here for some advice. I can also give you some links for that if you are interested. I've only introduced Esky to poultry and a little bit of fish so far. Lamb and pork are a bit expensive for me at the moment and I don't want to overload her system with too many kinds of meat at once/.

  8. Hey more noobie questions

(i read the whole thread and my questions hasn't come up yet)

What's the best way to get into showing.?

I mean wouldn't a breeder be hesitant to give a show quality dog to someone who hasn't proven themselves in the ring.?

I've also seen breeders rehoming/ selling their show dogs because they don't have time to show them all. Would that be a better route to go, since I don't have to go through all the initial puppy training etc?

What you suggest is my best approach?

Another dumb question. Say I enter the only Saluki in a show. Does that automatically mean I get BOB and get 5 points :o

  9. No problems.

Considering where you live it might be worth considering one of these http://cgi.ebay.com.au/POLAR-COLLAR-COOL-P...=item3a571997c5

at some point. It's called a polar collar, and I found it worked really well on my other Husky. You can find similar products in pet stores, but they involve you filling the collar up with ice, which melts. The polar collar has special things inside it which keep it cool..

(man I sound like a really bad advertisement)

Also, do you have Kongs. Kongs are great for teethy, chewy bitey dogs. I like to put chicken mince in Esky's Kong then freeze it. Keeps her busy forever
