  1. Had the babies last night.

Who would have guess we would have 6 bitches in a row ALL Black/White then 1 Dog also Black/White then a Liver/White bitch and 1 final Black/White Bitch

    Total - 9 pups

    8 bitches

    1 dog

    Rae

ETA: sadly the little boy passed away an hour ago :'( We think from some type of bowel obstruction. This is the 1st time since breeding that I have had a living baby pass on. God but it hurts

    Run free sweet boy......

I am so sorry for your loss. It does hurt a lot and sometimes is hard to understand. I am sure everything will go well from now on.

  2. Usually how long do you keep the Whelping box in your bedroom for before you transfer it to a living area?

This is the first time we have had the whelping box in our room. Usually we would have it located in the family room off the kitchen however we have 7.5 week puppies in there. It has worked well but you hear every sound and movement and get up continuously on autopilot. The family room for me is the preferred option.

  3. Here are my weights if that's any help, good to know a small loss is normal.

    Boy 1 from 105g to 107g

    Boy 2 from 127g to 121g

Boy 3 from 153g to 139g (biggest loss)

    Girl 1 from 147g to 143g.

They've been suckling, have seen one sucking the gland and not the teat, so fixed her up. I gave Portia a squeeze before and milk was coming out of only one teat.... silly question, does this mean the pups may have fed from the others (they were red, so had been suckled from) and those one's supply is drained and waiting to be refilled? :rainbowbridge:

My first litter, so I apologise if the answer is bleedingly obvious.

The more they feed the more mum will make and her milk will come down faster. The colostrum always looks like there is not enough but it is so rich. Are they crying much? If they seem content, still keep putting them on as often as you can to see if they would like to drink. Mine would stay on there for an hour at a time. Some puppies will lay there and look content but may need a bit of encouragement so they don't slip under the radar. Mine are laying on a heat pad even though today is quite warm as this will help them digest the milk. If they become too warm they will move. I weigh at least 3-4 times a day in the first few days to graph the gain. As the loss is small you should see a gain soon.

I am sure you are doing everything right.

  4. The smallest puppy has put on a little bit of weight, the rest have lost a few grams.

Would it be a good idea to top them up, or see how they are a bit later today?

Portia is getting the hang of this feeding business now.

I know they should double their birth weight in a week, but is it usual for them to go down a little bit the first day?

Congratulations Paptacular. We have both been busy the last two days. Our pugs usually lose around 10% (less if small) in the first 24 hours but we would then expect them to go up. We don't top up if they are strong as we want them to get as much of the colostrum as possible. Our smallest puppy was born at 114gm, dropped to 112gm in the first 12 hours but is now 130gm 40 hrs after birth. He is strong, drinks the most out of the 7 puppies and is fiesty. Good luck.

  5. I am wanting to put a puppy pen around whelping box etc but only want a puppy pen tthat is knee height so i can step over it easily. The ones at warehouse and crazy clark arent sturdy enough. Can anyone suggest where to get a puppy pen at knee height that is better quality then crazy clark etc...

We buy the silver TFN pens from Petstock (110.00). We use them all the time when we have a litter from separating the kitchen from the lounge at night to the puppies playpen through the day in the lounge or outside. We couldn't live without them. We have Pugs so only buy the 45cm high x 8 panels. They are the best height so our kids and guests don't trip over them. They are also pre-joined so fold up quickly. I can attach a photo if you need to see it.

  6. If you live in Werribee try Dr John Watts at Wyndham Vet clinic.

Sorry I just realised you've been going to Werribee not live in Werribee.

We have been going to John Watts for over 8 years. Excellent repo. specialist.

  7. Our Aussie Shepherd girl, Vivi, delivered 5 lovely big pups last night - all out and done in just short of 4 hours. We got 4 boys (3 blue merle, 1 black tri) and 1 girl (blue merle). Mum & pups are all doing well this morning.

Congratulations 'The Ark' on the safe arrival of your five puppies. Would love to see some photos.

  8. Puglodge are you a member of the Pug Club of Victoria? If so, contact the Secretary and ask if there are members in Shepparton - she would be able to ask them and report back to you where they take their pugs.

If not a member perhaps you might consider joining? The Secretary is active on DOL and might dob herself in with luck! Right, Jane?

    Hi

I have been a member for a number of years but did not rejoin last year. I may look at the website and get the application to rejoin. The vet was for one of our puppy buyers who lives in Shepparton but had a bad experience with one there.(first time ever at a vet)

She emailed us at the time asking for any names of vets. I think she has since found a lovely one.

Thank you both for your help. :(

  9. Thanks. They were out for their daily play ( 5 minutes and they are exhausted) and as they are typical girls and don't travel light they always bring their toys. I don't think they take much notice of them but I love to give they colourful toys to look at.

Good luck with Jess. Is she due this week?

MonElite sorry to hear about all of the trauma your girl went through. I am glad it is over for you and you have 10 beautiful puppies.

Stolzseinrotts gorgeous photos of all of your babies. How hard to must be to tell them apart?

  10. I have several pieces of Rubber Back Vet Bed, I don't like it. Maybe im doing something wrong?

The pee sits on top and does not drain through, They have all been washed 20+ times and every piece has the same problem.

The rubber is peeling and gets mushed into the plush pile and you have to pull it all off by hand, reminds me of grated cheese!

I have washed some pieces on cold wash, others on warm - same problem.

These pieces are only 4 weeks old.

Is it just more or do others have the same problem?

I have previously used 100% woolen carpet and love it!

Any liquid drains straight through to the paper underneath.

Down side is you have to gurney it clean and can take a while to dry.

We are using that type at present but Rosie kept digging it after the puppies were born ( as they do) and the white rubber was flaking off everywhere. We would have to pick out the pieces all the time as we worried the puppies may inhale or swallow some. Last night I ordered the normal type without rubber backing.

I have since cut it in half for the whelping box so that paper is exposed at one end and Rosie can dig that up. I don't think I will buy that type again.

  11. Hi guys,

I've missed heaps the last few weeks while I've been on placement and away from the computer! Please excuse my group congratulations :)

Congratulations to - Puglodge, Bilbo Baggins, redkidsmum, Leema, Risyntira, Partipaws, Fordogs, Stolzseinrotts and Firestone! Lots of new Decemebr babies :):mad :mad

Mimi is getting fatter and fatter - only a few days until her babies are due.

Hope all the new mummas and babies are well xx

Good Luck Talisker with the impending litter.

  12. Hi Everybody.......

Just dropped by to let you know they have arrived. Born on the 20th, yesterday afternoon / last night we had 9 girls and 4 boys arrive........yes 13 babies!

I have not had any sleep, my eyes are hanging out of my head and I hope to get a few hours of sleep today. So far this morning we have all the arrivals still with us, a few are a bit rattily (sp?) in the chest but so far so good. I will post some pics when I get the camera out and after I get a bit of sleep.

    I am exhausted!

CONGRATULATIONS. How exciting! Were you expecting that many? Make sure you get some rest. Remember when people would say to sleep when the baby was sleeping but we never did. I think you have a good reason to do it with your puppies.

I will never complain about my small litter ever after hearing your news. ;)

  13. Congratulatiosn on the new arrivals

Cynda and puppies are going well. Thanks again to Bokezu, Cynda has been going well and will all the food she is now having, she has loads and loads of milk :(

The 3 pieds are bloody huge is every which way so they must be taking after their grand dad I think. And my little runt girl, is not much of a runt any more ;)

Excellent news that Cynda is feeling better.

  14. My babies are all doing well..little girl gave us a few days of real worry..lost a lot of weight..from 102 birth weight down to 80gms

developed colic ??on third night ..was screaming ..would not feed ..just kept her warm and stroked her tummy

was up every hour when she finally started feeding again to put her on boob

Now at 6 days has gained 60gms and is a strong fighter

    post-22442-1292674151_thumb.jpg

Glad to hear that the little girl is doing better. One of our girls was very unsettled last week for about 24 hours. She whinged and wouldn't feed as well as usual. We did the same things and kept her warm, kept offering the boob. In the end she threw up twice (fresh milk) and did a huge poo by herself (1 1/2 in long). I think her tummy was just unsettled but it worries you so much.

    Mum watching over her girls.

  15. Our girls opened their eyes yesterday at 9 days old.

    Is that normal for pugs?????

The earliest we have had eyes open was at 12 days.

Probably 1-2 days earlier than most of our litters. These girls came out screaming and were very strong from the start. They also crawled around the box with their head up like their eyes should be open. We have had a litter that waited until 14 days.
