  1. You'll have lots of fun with that combo and yes it's too cruel making you wait so long, but think how excited you'll be on the morning of your birthday.

Oh yes I definitely will be! We're off to a show on my birthday, so I'll need to teach OH how to use it in the morning so that he might be able to get some ring shots (not sure how well he'll go with that lens though!)

Beautiful, especially the one of Akira. But she's such a gorgeous subject, there's no way she could look bad!

Awww thanks Minxy, I think the Kez is gorgeous too but I'm a little biased!

    Thanks everyone. :D

  2. Tip, not criticism.

You have chopped the ears off.

Done on purpose for the first and third shots. I was after more of an ECU rather than a normal closeup. Probably not quite an ECU, I was wanting between a choker shot and a closeup I suppose. The middle shot was badly framed, I wanted Halo's eyes on the top third, but they're just above. Plus I focused on her foot rather than her eyes, so it wasn't a great shot anyway.

Thanks for the comments guys, yes the wait is going to be horrible now that I've been able to take a few shots!

  3. Officially I'm not allowed to have my new camera until my birthday (just under a month away) however I was able to take it out of the box for a little play this afternoon and here are the first photos. I haven't edited them at all other than resizing them. I think I'm in love!

I have a long way to go (there's a fair few blurry photos that I didn't focus properly!) but I'm happy with how these have turned out.

  4. I'm a member of my breed club (even though the breed club is interstate).

A friend and I try and organise two picnics per year so that people of our breed can meet up and we can show people interested how wonderful our breed is.

We are planning on trying to have a stand for our breed at the Dogs SA Open Day next year - unfortunately very few people were available this year so we weren't able to do it.

I'm always happy to talk about my breed and am happy to help new exhibitors out (though I'm a new exhibitor myself!)

I'm a member of the Junior Kennel Club of SA and have recently become secretary of it.

And I always talk about the benefits of owning purebred dogs and going to a registered breeder - I have helped a cousin and an aunty to find registered breeders of their chosen breeds this year.

  5. 1. Relatively independant

    2. Medium sized

    3. Drivey

    4. Confident and intelligent

    5. Good with kids

My Husky is fairly close to this, she's maybe a little too independant, and she's not confident with certain things, though that's her upbringing, not her breed. My Lappie is all of this, though drivey depends on the dog.

  6. However there was a time when I thought they were cruel - then I learnt all about them

My OH hated the thought - he said there was no way we were getting one. Then I got one anyway, and he was amazed at how quickly Akira settled. Now Halo sleeps in a crate every night, she goes straight to it and loves it, and OH brings the soft crate anywhere we go with the dogs. He's sold on how great they are. :)

  7. Source: http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/8373560/puppy-beaten-to-death-with-hammer

A man has thrown a puppy against a power pole and beaten it to death with a hammer in western NSW, police say.

A man parked his car at Narromine and took a border collie puppy from it about 4pm (AEDT) on Saturday.

He threw the dog against a power pole and then used a hammer to attack it, finally throwing it in grassland and leaving the scene.

The dead puppy was found by police who attended the scene.

The man has been described as Caucasian, young in age, with short hair and of neat appearance.

The car he was driving has been described as a small, green/blue coloured hatchback sedan.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

  8. Yeah I didn't think they took that long, but I haven't had my girl's done yet so I wasn't sure.

And good point about having them done when she was pregnant!

There's a few other things that don't add up as well that made me scratch my head, but they're regarding health tests we don't do in my breed so I wasn't sure.

  9. it would also be great it there was something to indicate who was there (ie which kennels. Maybe kennel names near their dogs?) - that way if people are really interested in certain dogs they can get the name of kennels without interrupting and then contact them at a time that is hopefully more convenient.

You actually have to be careful doing that, because if you're set up near the ring you're not actually allowed to broadcast who you/your dogs are to the judge.

  10. I think it's a good idea too, but you can't make people be involved by forcing clubs, if you did, the people who got to man the stands simply wouldn't be passionate about it and would resent it. And not all breeds have breed clubs, but hopefully people involved in the breed could get involved.

The Dogs SA open day had numerous sports on show. Agility, flyball, dancing with dogs, obedience and herding. I believe several other sports also had stalls. I think it was fantastic to have it all on display. There was also a pet dog show and there were heaps of people and dogs involved in that.

The Dogs SA one is a good one (I was sad I missed it this year) but once again it's at our grounds and isn't well advertised. I only heard about it in the monthly catalogue.

  11. I really think we could do more to get the ANKC on the map - not just dog showing, but all the dog sports. a big open day with demos running for all the sports, all day, with breed information stands from each of the breed clubs and individual breeds (for those without breed clubs) Imagine the publicity if every state body took ONE weekend day with no shows, to hold a national ANKC open day for the public where every breed club must participate... dogsport clubs arrange demos with volunteers for flyball, agility, obedience, DWD, Rally, herding, retrieving, earth dog etc etc. of course not every dog sport could be included (lure coursing and field trialling for example) but a lot could. I am sure that there would also be possible sponsors for such a huge event. of course, people have to be on board, and there would have to be organisers... it would take so much dedication from so many people... but something like that would put us on the map.

I really like this idea. Lots of people have no clue about dog sports either - so many people ask us what we do at agility, and why we go to obedience when my dogs know how to sit on command! They don't know enough to get involved so we need to show them.

On the weekend at a country show, my OH bought our scooter along because there were some good areas to take our Husky for a run at the back of our campsite. The man camped next to us was really fascinated and when the weather cooled down enough for them to go for a run, he took video of it so that he could show his friends at home. He had a stack of questions that OH answered and he's now got an interest in it. People need to be exposed to pedigree dogs and sports you can do with them and at the moment I don't think that's happening.
