  1. Found an old topic on this, and people suggested trying Vistaprint. Having bought stuff from Vistaprint before, I know their quality can be questionable, so I was just wanting to know how the decals that others have bought from there have turned out.

We're just wanting to put our kennel name on the back of our trailer - OH reckons a picture of the dogs too, but I don't think I want to. Anyone else have any other suggestions on places to go?

  2. I have a dog who gets quite stressed when she's on lead and other dogs approach her. She obviously feels vulnerable, and she'll snap after a warning growl if a dog gets too close sometimes the growl is nearly silent and the snap comes very fast.

She should obviously be muzzled Gayle... ;)

Yep, my Husky has become quite similar lately. Off lead she's fine, but if a dog gets too close when she's on lead she'll give a warning growl (and by too close, it's normally a dog sniffing her bits for too long!). I haven't let her get put into a position where she might snap, but I wouldn't put it past her to do it. I think she feels cornered when she's on a lead and like she can't get away. Many dogs don't like other dogs in their personal space, especially if they think they can't get away.

  3. Ok, I think it was in this thread that all the links for the various tug leads were posted. I have had a scan but no luck finding them. I know 1 was static paws and that was posted a couple of pages ago but I remember a discussion and quite a few links being put up. Does anyone have them?

Now that I am actually training Jazz regularly I would like to get her a nice matingale all in 1 lead to make life easier.

Can't help with the Aussie sites posted, but the one I've had my eye on for a while now is www.rushtotug.com

I was going to order, but have decided to make my own now!

I got mine from Statik Paws http://statikpaws.weebly.com

    That looks great, RubyStar!

  4. A Finnish Lapphund could be something to think about. Great family dogs, though they're on the small side of medium and are less likely to accidentally hurt a child than an exuberant labrador.

We had Hungarian Vizslas as kids and they were great famiy dogs too, though the pups can be a bit over the top in my experience.

  5. Quangle, my pup is almost finished her first season. It's been really easy to deal with, though we've been lucky in that she hasn't actually flagged or anything like that. Her breeder said that's normal, and the first season is often just for practice so things don't really go as they would with an adult. We have an entire bulldog next door who is an experienced stud dog on breeder's terms and he hasn't even noticed she's in season.

If you're not confident, I'd board her or send her for a holiday to her breeder. But I doubt it would hurt letting her have a season (though I don't know much about inverted vulvas) and hopefully the problem will correct itself.

  6. name them whatever you like- nicknames usually take over anyway ;)

    So true

Completely agreed. I don't think my two ever get called their real names unless they're in trouble. Halo is normally Hales or Haley-hoo (or the long list of insulting nicknames that OH has for her).

  7. Average for a labrador (I'm assuming that's what you're getting?) is 16, so 7/5 (total of 12) is below average. Elbows are good and eyes are good.

Don't forget that yes while hip scores CAN be genetic, it's very environmental too and things like the dog being allowed to jump as a puppy or slippery floorboards while growing can have a negative impact on hip scores. So yes, use them as a guide, but don't make them your be-all and end-all. :)

Personally, I'd be happy with a pup from a parent with those scores.

  8. Personally, I don't believe a dog should be neutered before it reaches maturity. Hormones are used for growth, so yes it can affect their development by having them neutered so young.

Here is a really good paper on pros and cons of desexing: http://www.naiaonline.org/pdfs/longtermhealtheffectsofspayneuterindogs.pdf As you can see, for males, the cons of desexing are much higher than the pros. I'm not saying "don't desex ever" because I believe in desexing, but I don't think it should be done before a year of age, preferably 18 months. I have a desexed bitch (Sibe) who was done at 6 months and I wish I'd waited longer because she has the worst coat ever and we're noticing in coated breeds this is a result of desexing. Plus if you want to do dog sports like agility, it's best to wait until their joints are fully developed to lessen risk of injury.

  9. I don't blame the dog, but I don't always blame myself either. Sometimes the dog has had too much and you just need to give them timeout (not a punishment). Why does someone always need to be blamed? I personally hate the saying "roll up a newspaper and hit yourself over the head with it". I know it is light hearted but I think this kind of thinking puts way to much pressure on owners.

Agreed. I had an awful training session with Akira on Friday night because she was just highly distracted by EVERYTHING and she didn't want to work. Nothing I could do about it, because I tried focus games to get her focus on me, but nada. I put her in the car and took her home.

And it wasn't even a full moon so I can't even blame that!

  10. Okay, so if I make her sit stay away from the target, put the treat on it, then come back to her and tell her to touch? She'll go straight for it (though I'll have to let her realise that she's allowed to break her stay if I say touch) because she's a garbage guts and will know exactly where it is. Then slowly phase out the treat on the target?

  11. My sister bought me some and they're horrible IMO.

They look really interesting. What didn't you like about them WA?

I have long double coated dogs, so they're no good on coats like that. They just skim the top and not really give a proper groom. Plus they're big and bulky in my hands. I would hate trying to use one to get a knot out.

I'm probably a bit spoilt though, because I have really nice brushes and combs already.
