Comon Things People Dont Realise About Your Breed
Remarkabull replied to MonElite's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes, Dobermann's DO have a tail. No their ears are naturally soft and floppy, not pointy like all the Dobes on TV. No they will not attack my children when I'm not looking, they are fantastic family dogs. -
Under Cover Pet Shop Assistant On Today Tonight?
Remarkabull replied to Shmurps's topic in General Dog Discussion
I knew someone exactly like this. In the 2 year period I was 'acquainted' with her she had 5 different dogs (4 were surrendered to RSPCA and 1 later died, at age of 2), 2 cats (1 returned to pet shop and don't know what happened to the other one) 2 birds (both given away as they were too noisy) 1 ferret (given away because she was too scared to handle it) and a huge number of pet rats (most died, some given away, then she got more because 'they are so cute when they are babies'). When I could handle it no longer and stopped all contact with her I heard that she had gotten another 2 dogs. . They are both probably at RSPCA or a rescue as we speak. Sorry to go off topic :D -
How much vinegar to water ellz? We have just moved and this yard is alot smaller and with 5 dogs weeing (often multiple times in one spot - boys marking girls) there is tons of little patches of burnt grass. I have purchased some Dog Rocks but it said it may take 5 weeks to work and would love something else to try that is more cost effective and allows me to completely empty and refill water bowls daily. Very scientific amount....a good old fashioned "slosh"! No seriously, you'll need to add it and increase gradually or they won't drink it. I start out with a couple of capfuls to a normal household sized bucket. My lot get a couple of cups per bucket now, dogs and cats alike. I drink it too, but in warm/hot water with some honey. Haven't had a UTI in years and I suffered badly from them for years. There are other benefits too but you can google them....there are heaps, including anecdotal evidence that it improves fertility and conception rates. Can't say much about that for sure because I don't breed often, but my last Stafford litter was 9 puppies and all survived! Ta, will get some today!

Dogue De Bordeaux Puppy Purchased Concern
Remarkabull replied to AshSky's topic in General Dog Discussion
What, a breeder that has taken full payment for a pup, said to be contacted about papers then wont pick up or has let buyers know whats going on, then they find out the breeder is not financial and cannot be contacted at all. I'd be a bit worried too considering the price of a bordeaux puppy. If she was going on holiday for 2 weeks some consideration in the way of a 3 second email saying 'your papers will be on the way soon, I wont be contactable for a couple of weeks but dont panic' never killed anyone. I understand the concern, but the breeder did say when she picked up the pup that it would be around 4 weeks until the papers arrived. I would have given her the benefit of the doubt and waited for that time to pass. No need to panic and assume the worst of someone. We are all human and make mistakes, forget to do stuff, leave our phones behind etc -
Dogue De Bordeaux Puppy Purchased Concern

I was thinking that too Jules.. bit of an overreaction for two days of no contact if that's all it was.. if I was the breeder I'd be unimpressed to see this thread here after such a short time. My thoughts too. Not only is it all over DOL but I wonder how many other people have heard all about this breeder that 'refused' to answer calls, texts and emails. -
Yay! Glad he's home, hope everything works out.

I got my old Dobermann when I was 8 months pregnant with my first child! I was very strict with him about everything from day 1 and it payed off. I also think I was lucky in a way that he was naturally a very serious dog that was eager to please (me) and never went through the usual puppy stages. I think it's completely doable as long as you are prepared to put in the work initially. :D

I have heard some very complicated, unusual names at times. Some breeders go for the unusual or different and some go for simple and easy. I once had a Welsh Mountain Pony who we called 'Hobo' but his registered name was '(prefix) Pin Dragon Arthur' The breeders of my Dobe went with a simple letter theme. He is from the 'c' litter so his registered name is '(prefix) Condor', all his littermates have names starting with the letter 'C'. I would have been happy with that name but we had already picked out 'Acheron' as the name for our next Dobe. I think you should go with whatever theme you like. You are very lucky to be able to pick a registered name for your baby! :D

Ok here is my take on it. If someone was taking pics of my dogs then I really wouldn't mind. I personally don't want pics of myself taken by anyone, but as long as the photos were tasteful I wouldn't mind that much. If someone approached me and said they would like to take some candid pics of my kids then that would be ok too. I would know about it but the kids wouldn't so both myself and the photographer are happy. If I saw someone taking pics of my kids (and I don't mean that the kids just happen to be in the pic, but specifically of my children) then yes I would be a little suspicious and I would probably ask what they were doing. That's my job as a parent, to protect my kids and if that means possibly offending a stranger that is taking innocent pics of them then so be it. I would not make a big scene or call the cops (unless it became obvious the person was doing the wrong thing) I would just politely ask why were they taking pics of my kids and if I was satisfied with the response and the pics then I would leave them to it. I agree that in this day and age that the wrong people are being policed and punished and the real 'bad guys' have all the rights, but I love my kids and want to protect them. You photographers out there also need to understand that not everyone see's things the same way you do. Not everyone is artistic or gets why you want a pic of that particular thing or person and that it means something to you. I envy your passion and artistic talent. :D

WHy would you own a STORE thats sells animals if you didn't care about making money? Especially one from that particular chain? No matter how much the owner may care they still can't properly vet a possible client as well as a breeder or rescue can. Breeders form a relationship with potential puppy buyers weeks, months in advance. Rescue require inspections and also have a chance to get to know the person before letting the puppy go to it's new home. In a pet shop the deal can be done, money handed over and they're out the door in 20 mins. How is that 'caring' about the welfare of the pups and kittens?

Under Cover Pet Shop Assistant On Today Tonight?

Does anyone have a link to the show so I can watch it on the computer? Have googled but no success. -
Unfortunately head office (of pets paradise, not the shopping centre) will probably just take back control of the store until some other moron decides to buy it and then the same thing will probably happen again. They won't care about the puppies, they will care that it might stop people spending money there though. I truly loathe the entire company and what they stand for. Bunch of money hungry a#*holes!

I'd just be honest with them. Animals are animals and there wasn't really anything you could have done to stop it from happening anyway. My ex BIL had one of his pig dogs Max (WolfhoundxMastiff) in his back yard and while he was at work the neighbours 2 Bull Terriers dug under the fence and tore Max to shreds. When he got home he found Max, still alive, with his legs torn to pieces. He had to be PTS. Neighbours and dogs were gone, never to be seen again.

Old guy, long hair, 3 day growth, sandals. Well dressed woman, couple of gold rings, nice makeup. Would either of those two examples give you a different impression? (there is a point to my question - I'll get to it in a bit) I meant the impression I got of them after talking to them, the reasons they gave for taking the pics etc, not so much what they looked like. I learned a long time ago that appearances don't mean much!
-
Sure I totally understand that. Would it make a difference to you if the person taking the photos was male or female? Nope. However if the person explained why they were taking the pics and if I felt they were being honest I would probably be ok with it. Depends on the impression I get of the person.
-
Because people are fantastic subjects, especially when the photographer wants to portray emotion. Looks at sports photography as an example - can you get better than the look on an athlete's face as they cross the line to win a gold medal? OK maybe that's a bad example if comparing to everyday stuff but think of a kid looking at a bug or a blade of grass and being totally in the moment. Would that be a bad thing if you saw a beautiful photo of your kid doing that? No that wouldn't be a bad thing but look at it from the point of view of a parent. How would you react if you noticed someone (a stranger) taking photos of your child, without knowledge or consent? Seeing that would set off some alarm bells and innocent or not I would rather err on the side of caution as far as my kids are concerned.
-
Sure for sure. I'm not having a go at you, I'm just really curious because when I take photos of people it's to document my own feelings so I take photos of people doing ordinary stuff, like making a cup of tea or looking at a rain cloud or just telling their kid not to drop icecream on their shirt. Just day to day stuff. Stuff like that wouldn't bother me too much but I would still be wary if I discovered that someone had been taking photos of me without my knowledge or consent, but that has probably got more to do with my lack self confidence - why would someone want a photo of me doing anything? I would be more upset/suspicious if pics were taken of my kids without prior knowledge.
-
If I took a photo of you dropping a piece of paper in the bin and you actually noticed me taking it, would you think that was weird? To me that moment in time might be saying something. To you, you're just dropping a piece of paper in the bin so therefore, I'm a weirdo? It's not like I know your name, where you live and what you ate for breakfast. I'm just capturing a moment. How can you tell if someone is taking a photo for 'no reason'? That's why I said 'no reason that I could see'. I'm not a photographer, I'm not artistic and to me personally I would think it strange that someone would take a pic of me doing something so ordinary. I never said that it would automatically make them a 'weirdo', it would just stand out as strange to me and I would wonder why they were doing it. If they then explained to me what/why they took the photo then I would probably be ok with it.
-
I've had photos of myself and my old Dobe (Sarge) put on websites without my permission but it was always on sites promoting flyball and they were taken by a member of a flyball club. At competitions spectators were always taking pics of us and dogs competing and it didn't bother me much as most pics were of the dogs and not of us people. I have had people (mostly Japanese tourists) ask to have a photo taken with Sarge while at the Sydney Royal and at other comps and I didn't mind that either but I would feel a little uncomfortable if someone was taking pics of me and dogs without asking and for no reason that I could see.

I will try to get it on video and then will post for all to see! :D
-
I would have thought something like that too but Odie is submissive to no-one! He is 4kgs of attitude! He will also growl at Jazz and Acheron if they move their heads away while he is doing it! He tries to do it to the other little dogs but they won't stay still and let him. He's a special little guy :D
-
Odie loves to lick inside my other dogs mouths. I was just watching him doing it to Acheron and it's so gross! (Although Acheron doesn't seem to mind) He will keep doing it for as long as they let him and as the 2 big dogs are the only ones that do let him his little head sometimes disappears right inside their mouths! He will also lick the inside of any unsuspecting persons mouth and will also try and get his tongue right up our nostrils! It's not the nicest feeling when he gets his tongue an inch or so up ones nasal cavity! What gross or weird things do your dogs do?

Rant: Tiny Little Puppy - Off Lead
Remarkabull replied to MalteseLuna's topic in General Dog Discussion
Dogs off lead really shit me! There are heaps of people around here that walk their dogs off lead. It makes it really hard for me to walk my DA dog. I no longer take her out unless my OH comes with me just in case a stupid person with a stupid dog happens to be out and about at the same time. I just started going to obedience classes up here and have to say that I can't wait to get up to the higher levels cause at least those people have dogs with manners and don't let their 'friendly' dogs jump all over each other like the people that were in the beginners class. On the plus side I will definately get there faster than them as my dog can focus on me and isn't interested in playing with the other dogs. -
Take away the issue of the nose colour and I think that the problem with blue SBT's is that the majority of them are bred by people that are doing it for the money (to supply the ignorant with the latest craze and fleece them of a huge amount of money in the process) and are not breeding good quality dogs together and therefore are consistently producing dogs well below the standard. ETA - Not saying that there can't be a blue that is everything a SBT should be (except, of course, for the nose ) but it's not good odds of finding one given how many are being bred atm.
