  1. This is such a worry. it's happening all over Queensland too. A friend just up the road from us caught someone jump his back fence and try to take his bull breed type dog and they tried to take the neighbour's dogs too. He has now put barbed wire along the tops of all his fences and keeps the dog inside.

Makes me very nervous. It hurts to imagine the feeling of your dog being stolen and not knowing where they are ending up and what's being done to them :(

  2. While I do feel sad for this woman, since when has 1.8 kgs been too small to microchip! That comment is just insane. Kittens are generally done from as young as 6 weeks and they would be lucky to weigh one third of that - some vets even desex at that age - much smaller than that dog.....................it could have made the difference if someone has found her to her getting her dog back.............not to mention it's compulsory anyway!

I thought that was strange too. It obviously isn't a financial issue as to why it wasn't done. Maybe she heard from somewhere that the dog was too small - possible an ill informed breeder or vet? I do feel for the lady. It's great that she is so devoted to getting the dog back. I hope she is aware to check the pound - lots of people aren't.

It sounds like the dog has used the dog door and then the yard isn't secure?

  3. I was talking to another dog crazy friend tonight and she mentioned that she is attending a baby shower tomorrow. Since neither of us have kids but we love dogs, we came up with the idea that we should have puppy showers. I wonder if anyone else has done that?

I don't know if many of my friends would take it seriously if I really did that lol!

We don't have kids either, and Ive not been invited to many over the years (I think because my friends know I couldn't have babies, and that the shower parties will upset me frown.gif)

Im tempted to do one for Miah, and have been considering it, just don't have the energy to put one together, and I have noone else that would do one for me.

Sorry to hear that Jules

I think if you want it you should do it - any excuse for a fun get together that is dog related. I'm thinking I'll start a thread for ideas. I have one crazy dog friend and she has kindly offered to throw it for me. Most of my other friends aren't dog people but I'm going to invite them anyway, then I'm also going to invite some of my long term dog training clients too to get a few more dog people involved. Do you have some dol friends nearby that you could invite?

  5. I stumbled across this news article from the Phillipines. It just happened in January. So very sad and how traumatic for the family.

I wonder what made the dog do this. Poor "attack" training maybe?

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – Nine-year-old Marianne Gonzales was so engrossed with memorizing the prayer for her first communion as she was walking just outside the house of Geolar Tan inside Summer Hill Subdivision in Barangay (village) Pasonanca here on Monday afternoon that she failed to notice the fast-approaching Belgian Malinois, which had managed to cut loose from its collar. In seconds, the dog leaped towards her and sank its fangs into the girl’s neck, who barely managed to shout for help.

Two more fatal bites to her face and nape and Marianne was dead.

The attack was witnessed by Marianne’s younger sister, seven-year-old Ellamarie and her cousin, 12-year-old Maricel Pahamutang.

But they could not do anything against the rampaging dog except to run home and told Marianne’s mother, Mardelyn, who was then attending to her youngest child, about it.

“I thought she was only bitten by a dog and we rushed to the area only to find out that my eldest daughter was already lifeless, her neck badly damaged,” Mardelyn said.

Even then, they brought her to the Western Mindanao Medical Center but she had no chances of surviving the dog attack, she said.

Ryan Gonzales, Marianne’s father, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that one of the caretakers saw the attack but instead of helping his daughter, the caretaker dragged her towards the main road and “ran inside the house to get a bigger collar.”

“It was as if they were used to such kind of incident before. They treated my girl like a food left by a dog. They dumped her after she was bitten. They didn’t do anything to stop the dog,” he claimed.

In an interview with the Inquirer, Efigenio Julian Jr., Pasonanca barangay chair, called Tan’s dog a “killer dog.”

“I spent my life as an investigator and the way the dog bit the girl, I am sure it’s a killer dog, a dog trained to kill,” Julian said.

He said that the girl’s family resided outside the subdivision but he took the route by Tan’s home as a shortcut.

Ryan confirmed Julian’s story and added that school children like her daughter were used to passing by Tan’s house and it was the first time that the dog attacked a human.

Senior Supt. Edwin de Ocampo, city police director, said Tan and the dog’s handler were being investigated.

The police have taken custody of the dog.

“They could be held liable for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide,” De Ocampo said, when asked what case to file against the owner and the handler.

Local veterinarian Dr. Anton Lim said he was the one looking after the dog’s health and was surprised to know it attacked a human.

“That Belgian Malinois is a working canine and this dog was very calm. I am just wondering what had happened prior to the incident,” Lim said.

Lim said he wanted to know what transpired before the attack so he could provide an opinion on why the dog attacked a human.

  6. Further to what sas said - I have seen the vibrate function really scare the crap out of dogs too. And the low level stims they hardly feel.

You could condition a stim to a reward so that the dog comes running to you and giving you attention when it feels it. It could have a positive value very similar to what a clicker does when conditioned. You could even use it the exact same way.

Every other trainer I have spoken to who uses e-collars has felt the stims on themselves. I always test tools on my own skin before using it on dogs, including on my neck.

My e-collar has actually been used on more people than it has on dogs.

  7. My e-collar has 127 levels of stim (it's dogtra, they are a good brand as are sportdog). It also has a vibration/pager function. Most people I know can't feel the stim until it gets to about level 10 and it's very faint. I wouldn't have a problem with using one on a deaf dog (or any dog).

Rosetta, the stims are so low - you really need to feel it before you judge it. Think of it as a communication tool. Like tapping someone on the shoulder to get their attention.

  8. I was in the same boat last year as you Lollypop ! And then on top of all that waiting, once the puppies were born we had to still wait for another 4 weeks to even know if we were getting one. The waiting was unbearable and I couldn't say too much to anyone ! biggrin.gif

Its very exciting, enjoy the journey and its natural to be a bit nervous too!

What breed of dog are you on the waiting list for ?

I think I should make you wait haha :p

The mating is being done this week so I want to make sure she is confirmed in whelp before I say much. How long does it usually take before they can confirm by ultrasound? Anyone know?

I already was promised a puppy from someone else and that fell through and I was :( But now I feel like it was a blessing in disguise because I'm really happy with this mating I'm down for now. But nothing is set in stone yet so I'm nervous!

  9. Thanks for the link to the Cyber Dog, Clover - my guys have that - I bought some extras when Big W had them. They last well, and can be folded up in the mouth - and are good for tuffy, my BCs report - and still survive! The dogs and I also love the nylon ones - Flippy Flopper and Soft Bite - that Clean Run have - worth getting some when they're on free shipping.

Tassie - is there much difference between the Flippy Flopper and Soft bite? I'm looking at both online, they look similar but fairly big price difference.

  10. Was shocked to wake up to this news this morning. I'm so sorry Vi. You and Charlie were an inspiration. Although I never met Charlie (or you yet) I feel like I knew him because he was so much larger than life when you spoke about him. It's so clear that you loved him so much.

RIP Charlie. We will miss you.

ETA: That's a very beautiful photo to remember him by

  11. I had a border collie who prefered to be outside and would sit in pouring rain squinting to stop the water running into his eyes even though he had access to the house and dog beds under a covered entertainment area. Double coats have water proof qualities and when you parted his coat his skin would be dry.

My border collie does this. He has free choice to come inside or under the patio and he stands in the rain looking pathetic and miserable as if it's the worst day of his life and he has no choice. But he is dry underneath the outer coat
