  1. Could she be wormy? We were regularly worming and one of ours got zipper tapeworm oly symptoms diahrea badly into the vets for a stool sample and hats what thye found massive doese of wormer and then some specila stuff from vet with the good bacteria and shes fine now.
  2. Thanks for the replys good to know the price is in my range. I went to a rally o trial yesterday and spoke to a couple of owners. We are going to a breed show next weekend. We are in nsw so i hope to find a breeder close so i can go and meet with them see their other dogs. I have always bought a show quality pup and am yet to get a ch title due to various reasons and once the pups old enough i start the sports and the showing is less important to me so i choose to go to a trial rather than a show and cant get points if we dont enter :) so this time i think i will pick the pup i just like if its show quality good if not doesnt matter.
  3. Thanks for the replies. I am looking at an aussie shepherd. I have admired them for the past 10 years but after recently loosing our old kelpie girl i ahve just started to look at different breed options. I just didnt want to get on the wrong foot with a breeder but need to realistic if the breed is in my price range. My husband does the same with me if hes going to make a large purchase, We both have to be in agreeance after all hopefully we will have the pup for at least 13 years. Thanks
  4. Hi, I am about to start my search for a new pup. I know breeders would think its weird asking the price of a pup straight up but if things like health screening and what they feed, vax etc are already written on the website i'd ask that again but at some point i want to know the cost of the pup before putting my name down is it rude to ask in the first phone call. I have had dogs for over 20 yrs so know the ongoing costs (which we dont dare add up.... best not to know...)cost of trial and show entries vet bills etc but the inital cost of the pup when is the polite time and way to ask i would need to know as there is no way my husband will allow me to pay $3000 for a pup.
  5. hello perfect Paws, Thanks for your reply i am wondering if you are in a rural area what you do to prevent snakes. We dont have heaps but the reality is they can be around in summer. I guess this is one of my fears besides the whole funding the dream thing....
  6. Fantastic ideas and its good to know that i have already thought of all of the things mentioned. My husband and i met at dog training so both into dogs but he would remain in his current job. I feel we would start off small but build the kennel block with the idea of extendig should we be successful. We are meeting with a business coach in two weeks to get realistic goals and fears set down. We have been minding friends dogs for the past 5 years and christmas time its usual for us to have 15 dogs inclusing out own 5. So whilst i would never claim to be experienced but by having this many with us plus working fulltime i feel we cope very well and if e did it as a business it would be fulltime. In the quick phone conversation with the business coach when i made the booking it was intersting that she said that you need to consider various streams of income or value adding not just purely minding dogs so my other line of thought is a doggy fitness/boot camp idea with swimming and exercise corrective diet etc for the chubby bubbies, training i have been training dogs since 1988 and never stop learning i also take a puppy class at my local vets so have them as a contact and emergency reasons. Dogs are my passion and my life and they have kept me sane through lots of life changes and my goal in setting up kennels would be to mind the dogs in a friendly family environment. Of course its still a big dream and we need to see what council would approve or not approve but this is just my first starting point. One of my fears is snakes we have repellers all around but how did you guys that have done kennels before or still do how do you prevent this. I'm thinking shade cloth from ground level up high to prevent entry plus also more repellers. Of course the usual keep the area tidy from hiding spots and walk around the are before letting dogs out my cats do an excellent job at mousing to keep away any food supply for snakes. The shade sails seem great for shade in runs they can be taken down in winter to allow more sun. lets hope i still have a job after Monday and then this will still remain my dream.....
  7. Hi guys, Its looking like i might be made redunadant in my current job and its always been my dream to own boarding kennels. When i was a teenager i used to work at some but now years later i still have that dream sitting there. So my question is whats the things that you look for most in a boarding kennel. I have made my first move and booked an appointment with a business coach its all still a dream but just thought i'd love some more ideas to jot down when i talk to the business coach next week. I might not even loose my job yet the meetings for that is on Monday going to be a lonnnng weekend....
  8. We have a dual cab 4X4 colorado diesel. Reasonably economical better than our old rodeo petrol 4X4. We have a canopy on the back with sliding windows and a false floor. We dont set crates up iside as all our dogs get along but have had a crate set up when we took my daughters friends dog along with us the otehr week. The dual cab is good for the kids and the windows open my dogs have never been hot but dont get a dark coloured one we have white yes ok very boring but its never hot in the back for the dogs they never even puff in there
  9. Our old girl was a working kelpie so definately something with kelpie. When i was a kid we had a black dog that was maybe BC X Kelpie with maybe lab so i was thinking something along those lines. We had her for 16 years she was the love of my life helped me through those challenging teenage years.
  10. Just starting to think about my next agility dog have always had puppies but as we now are both working i'm thinking that maybe an older dog under 2 yrs old that we can start playing with straight away. Like i said i'm just starting to think and it might be a while off yet. Is this a good place to look i notice lots of pound dogs on here but is it better to search each rescue group? We have two others for it to play with when we are at work and live on 100 acres. We not long lost our old girl so not ready for a new one just yet.
  11. My goal would be to not have to work and take my dogs on hospital and aged nursing home visits i used to do this years ago when i was at school in the school holidays and i really miss that feeling you get when a special person reaches out to your dog. they tell you the same story everytime you visit but i loved it i was only 16 at the time and it made me really value life. So i would love to get back to it but not until we finish paying the mortgage and kids have finished school and i can go part time at work or win lotto....
  12. We lost our old kelpie two weeks ago and our young one went through exactly the same thing we went soft on her at the start then had to crack down a bit as she was really pushing her luck now its all back to normal thank good ness
  13. Only two weeks ago we had out old girl put to sleep. Our vet squashed us in first thing in the morning giving us a priorit appointment as it was very suddena t the end. We were charged $30.00 for the lethabarb no consult fee and the usual cost for pets at peace. This was for a kelpie. Then one week later we got a beautiful handwritten sympathy card from our vet. She really unserstands that what we do with our dogs and how much they are part of us. Really nice simple thing for a vet to do and you could tell it was personalised not just a run of the mill thing to do. Our vet always only charges for the lethabarb and nothing else for everyone no matter who they are.
  14. I hear and understand what you are saying and its easy for me to comment cause i have baby sat their old dog and new pup when they went on holidays and know how spoilt they are and any breeder wouldnt know this and would be trying to decifer the type of person they are. I think the fact that they swapped and allowed it inside is probably quite a common occurance usual think i'm not letting it inside in my bed whatever then arrives cute bundle of puppy and its totally spoilt and it lives inside and sleeps in the bed. The only point i'm trying to make is that for the average Joe some breeders make the hoops incredibly hard to jump through so this is what i would consider a great home for a dog ended up supporting a puppy farmer. They were quite prepared to wait as long as it took but they wanted the dog to be theirs. In small print on the bottom of this complicated questionaire it states At all times the pup will remain the property of XYZ>>>> Kennels and they will at all times be informed of any veternary treatment and permission will be obtained from XYZ<<< Kennels before any veterinary procedure occurs. Ok i can get that they want to be informed if say the dog has hip dyslpaysia and its having that surgery that important to know whats cropped un in their lines but to obtain permission for the surgery from the breeder is a bit rough. They were concerned mostly that what if they choice the surgery adn the breeder said no. Really i believe if you buy the dog you buy it with all the responsibilities keep in touch with the breeder and let them know of anything that pops up but it should be the owners responsibility to choice the best care for their animal. Wanted a GSP and ended up with a Dachshund.. because the breeds are so similar and all... And the dog was to sleep outside but the one they got now sleeps inside.. if they'd made that decision up front, they probably could have had the GSP after all. I love the idea that it's meant to be easy for any buyer to get the dog they want and somehow THAT justifies pet shops selling pups. Kerist I know families who shouldn't be allowed to keep tadpoles let alone some of the more challenging breeds. And can I please state for the record that the fact that you've managed to keep a dog of a particular breed alive for a decent period of time does NOT automatically make you a "good" owner for another dog of that breed. Case in point: Hungarian Vizsla owner in a family known to me. The dog sleeps outside, lives outside and never leaves the yard. Never. Suriving is not thriving and why any HV breeder would want to place a pup in that situation beats me. Sorry Dogmate, not having a go at you but most of these kinds of arugments have been floated before and most of them sink with a bit of scrutiny.
  15. I totally hate puppy farmers and the way they treat these precious babies. Someone on here asked why people buy from petshops. I can give an example of someone i know who was trying to do the right thing. She wanted a GSP pup had not long lost their old GSP at 14.5 years old. They had shown her as a youngster but as their kids wanted to do sport etc they stopped showing. They rang the breeder of their old dog she was no longer breeding but gave her the emails and phone numbers of breeders and i also told her of this website. She sent off 11 emails and didnt hear back from one she phoned breeders some were quite rude as the dog will sleep outside and they both work they got the cold shoulder. They had to fill in questionaires that in once case was 3 double sided pages long. They finally found one person who was sue to have pups later on this year problem was this breeder put all these restrictions on the pup and as my friend said i'm paying for this pup i want to own her outright. The pup wouldnt be in her name she had to send her back to the breeder for 3 litters. All she really wanted was a nice family pet that was of sound body and mind and was possibly looking at the option of showing. After much discussion they went past a pet shop fell in love with a dacshund pup went home and then called the shop back up and went and got her the next day. So they now have a most probably puppy farmed dog thats spoilt rotten who LIVES in the house and goes everywhere with them. Who is the loosers here the breeders who decided to be greedy and want all the rights of the dog they wanted to just be able to love. So i know breeders try to find the best lovig homes for their pups but really some of the restrictins are unrealistic causing people to just go to a pet shop and buy one basically on the spur of the moment but really also by being pushed into it from the breeder. Dont get me wrong i definately condone puppy farming dreadful practice but breeders als cant make unrealistic expectations on owners. So its never about the cost of the pup IMHO
  16. We have a young jack russell ready to start training for agility after chatting to our vet the other day shes given us two sample pots one joint guard the other pernease powder. She said we can use it as a preventative. My question is has anyone done this and is it a worthwhile thing to do? We eventually hope to breed her (if shes up to breed standard and old enough and breeder agreees etc) so i'm wondering if this should be stopped during pregnancy or how long before. Any other information or advice would be much appreciated.
  17. Is there a particular type of dremmel?
  18. Hi I am considering gettin a dremmel to do all my dogs nails. I have 5 dogs and as we live on a property and not alot of concrete around they usually get their nails done very 6 weeks when they get wormed. I go through a pair of guillotine clippers about every 6 months they just get blunt. Does anyone have any experience with dremmels do the little disk that spins get blunt or smooth and need replacing. If so would it be longer than the clippers. Granted i only buy the $12 guillotine type clippes as i find them the easiest for me to use but tried a more expensive pair and didnt get any loner use so am weighing up spending the extra money to get a dremmel and if it would be cheaper in the long run. Any brands better than others? Thanks
  19. Hi I keep seeing young kelpies needing foster homes. What is the process to help. we live on a property just out of bathurst we already have 3 working kelpies who work the sheep, agility, obedience etc. They live like normal pets we do put them in their runs at night just so that we can put the cats bowls at teh back door and no one eats it. When we know the meter is being read they are also in runs in casr the person doesnt shut the gate properly. We do both work full time but feel that doesnt jeopadise our dogs lives. How can we help these young pups. How much does it cost besides the usual food, vet bills etc is there cost we dont know about. Once in rescue how and where do you advertise. Do you rescue alone i read about a section ?? certificate where do you get that. Dont flame me for asking questions as this is my very first port of call so not sure of the right questions yet.
  20. I have just commenced my search for a new puppy. I am considering a few breeds as i really want to compete in agility and obedience and rallyo. Anyone have experience with labs doing agility? I have admired this breed for almost 20 years but am a bit concerned they they maybe a bit heavy boned for agility? other breeds i'm considering are GSP and Viszlas So anyone with experience in theses breeds how different is the temperaments. Years ago i owned a dalmatian so am used to the exuberance and i love that however i have been looking at dals at shows in Sydney and none i have seen have the bouncy personality my old dog did and alost (almost all had skin issues on the day). So i'm basically looking for an exuberant short coated breed that has the ability to want to work with me. I have only just begun my search or thinking so happy to wait for as long as it takes
  21. Obviously not related to my dalmatian.... She wont be seen dead in temperature below 20 degrees and can't possibly work in temperatures over 20
  22. Here is a link to the people i spoke to http://www.herbal-treatments.net/ apparently they treat amimals all around the place. I'm not syaing this had cured her as they even said if its full epilespy you don't sure it you control it But i guess if its allergy related you really could cure it. Worth a try i was a skeptic at the start
  23. Hi I posted a few weeks ago asking how much meat to feed my dalmatian as we were swapping her foods off processed food. Well we have made the transition and she hasn't reacted to chicken wings ( previouslt allergic to chicken that we had given her on several different occasions). She is having herbal drops from the natropath and its been 2 weeks now and she hasn't had a seizure. The natropath explained to me that some dogs can be allergic to things and just cause they have a seizure it isn't necessarily epilespy so under her reccommendation i took her off any processed foods. She said if you have a cough its not automatically throat cancer it can be a virus. something stuck in your throat allergy etc so she said that not all seizres are epilepsy. She wasn't responding to traditional medications after almsot 12 months of adjustments under vet supervison i was getting desperate so a friend reccommeded the natropath She was having a seizure at least every week and sometimes twice a week they were petitie mals but so far in two weeks nothing shes off the traditional meds and i didn't realise how lethargic and kind of slow it was making her shes now full of energy like a 3 year old dal should be. Last night i added a bit of flax seed oil as her coat could do with a bit more moisture and we will see what happens. I wish i had done this earlier so far so good and for her nay improvement is a good thing. I thought i would post this as there seems to have been a few people posting about seizure dogs of course it might not work for anotehr dog but might be worth a try
  24. Hello I got the feeding chart for an eplyeptic dog. Basically no oats, bran, and esp wheat, beans, beef pretty much everything else is ok. Extra calcium apparently some seizure dogs lack calcium and i reckon mine probably does before being desexed she had massive phantom pregnancies and as a pup she went right down in her pasterns so that will be intersting to see I already had made up some packages with brown rice, beef and vegies and i add calcium so will use that and change meat. She has been having one chicken wing daily with no reaction so far so good i wonder if they grow out of allergies like kids can???
