  1. 4Paws the notice doesn't mention that all of the cats affected had eaten their food and that it was the only link found between all of them. The information was a direct quote from a highly regarded vet specialist who I'm sure wouldn't put herself in the position of being sued by Champion Pet Foods by saying something she couldn't prove.
  2. http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/cat-de...7375062012.html Hopefully they can get this problem isolated and it doesn't affect further cats or involve any dog food.
  3. I was offered an appt with them on Friday but I opted to wait and see the best I am sure they would work with a similar technique to Rowan. They might be great - actually they probably are but I'd prefer to stick with the man I know (oh and Poppy just adores him).
  4. Did the vet deny an autopsy? IR - the remaining dog would only require IV fluids if it wasn't drinking or keeping down water. From what the OP says it is tolerating some food so it's obviously not getting sicker. Had the first dog died of gasto related illness there would surely be evidence of vomiting or diarrhoea. The haemorraging in the throat is a pretty good indication that there was clotting problems. The second dog however, is showing no signs of having clotting problems (blood in poo is normal with gut irritation) but is showing signs of having some sort of gastro problem which it seems to be recovering from. There is no reason to think that the two problems are linked - the dogs have nothing similar in their symptoms. Surely the owners could seek a second opinion from another vet if they were still concerned? Can they think for themselves? Why does everyone jump to conclusions about vet management? As a PP said - the autopsy is done at request of the owners. If they wanted one done and the vet refused then I am sure another vet would have obliged. They aren't cheap and it may have been the case that the vet thought it was a waste of their money considering the obvious evidence of haemorrhage within the dogs throat.
  5. Rigormortis sets in very quickly after death. Within a couple of hours, so that wouldn't hold any clue to how she died.
  6. It will only get bigger if the blood vessel is still bleeding. If the vet thinks it's stable and no noticable increase in size happens then the only thing that will happen is that it might reduce a little. It's just a blood clot sitting there and they can resolve on their own if left. Surgery involves making a small incision, squeezing out the clot and sewing it back up. Very straight forward.
  7. An autopsy could have been done but it would be at their expense. Sorry to hear about the dog - hope the other one makes a full recovery from whatever he has.
  8. Veanna I am so very sorry. It was clear how much you wanted and loved that puppy. RIP Odin.
  9. Oh this is the big black boy? Sending good wishes Tilly Sorry to hear that he is sick.
  10. I wouldn't see a recent history of having had puppies to be relevant now that she doesn't have a uterus. Desexing leaves a wound at the top of vagina where the uterus was removed. It's expected that humans will discharge after hysterectomy for a few weeks and in this case it's old blood from the internal wound healing. In saying that, it's not something I've experienced before in rescue animals I've had speyed. If it's not stinky then it's probably not an infective process (though that's not 100% guarantee). I would expect that it will decrese and stop with time. See what your vet thinks.
  11. Good point. I know the Mobic tablets are quite small. Mobic also comes in capsules - you can cut the powder into doses. I used 1/3 of a 7.5mg capsule for a dog needing 2.5mg per day.
  12. With money being no object I think I am feeding my dogs pretty much the best diet possible. It just also happens to be the cheapest (I have a great butcher who sells me mixed bones for $1 a bag - most bags are over 2kg). They get a combination of other stuff which is mostly natural. My dogs have the shiniest coats that literally glisten in the sun! People comment on them quite often. They also say OMG two labradors that aren't fat!! I dunno how people get fat dogs - mine eat heaps! I'd get some sheep bought in but they'd stink before they got fully eaten, my dogs don't know when to stop eating, and they'd be all messy from tearing them apart. I think I prefer neat little bones cut up, ETA Yes a few more whole rabbits and chickens - as suggested by a previous poster.... but from my own disease free stock
  13. I'd tend to use Betadine which dries and can't be licked off. That's the only issue I'd have with Bepanthen. Cleaning the dirt out of the graze is the best thing you can do. Washing removes most germs because it removes the dirt. Adding an antiseptic does kill a few more (it also kills regenerating cells so will slow wound healing if continually applied).
  14. I've had 6 years experience with Rowan Kilmartin. I wouldn't let anyone else touch my dogs. He is a Vet Chiropractor. Does accupuncture and homeopathy. I think he's awesome. People travel a long way to see him. He's at Ormeau - a little bit north of Dreamworld just off the M1.
  15. I had T bone watch me for about ten seconds before he started whining and within 5 seconds he was pawing the air and then jumped on me. He was looking at me the whole time He is nearly 6 and has had 18 months of obedience training when he was younger.
  16. Yup I'd take him off the grain based food and try him on just raw for a while. My girl gets stinky ears if I've been feeding kibble too often. A week back on raw and it rights itself (plus some cleaning).
  17. Rowan Kilmartin is great. He will get you to run your pup up and down outside before the consult so he can diagnose gait problems. Often having hands on the dog isn't enough - they need to see the pup move. Dogs do a bounding gait where both front paws move in opposition to both back legs together. The gait your dog is doing may just be this. You need to have someone look at her properly. Yep a pinched spinal nerve could be causing both the gait problem (if there is one) and the incontinence problem.
  18. pssst - work. Yes Trish *hands on hips* Midol needs his dog to have nuts. It's all about compensation
  19. Speaking of excuses Our dogs have a much higher chance of dying by escaping and being hit on the road or being invoolved in some sort of accident around the house/poisoned by snail bait/suffering bloat etc. I think we need to be aware of the very small risks associated with these straight forward procedures but shouldn't be using it as a sole excuse not to get the dog desexed.
  20. So sorry to hear this MJ. Run free Roggie Dog.
  21. Rice and the starchy water you've cooked the rice in works wonders.
  22. Yup these procedures are much safer than they used to be but always a risk. More from the anaesthetic than the surgery itself. So sorry to hear that Badboyz
