  1. I have to say, I went to the poultry place in Oakleigh on my way home from work last night and the two women there were fantastic and the pet mince is great, Lady behind the counter told me the turkey necks sell very, very fast but gave me their card to call the night before and make an order and she'd pop it aside.

Everything was lovely and fresh and I am very impressed! Even got us some chook...

I buy frozen chicken mince, at SUNRISE POULTRY at Thompsons Road right near KCC Park for 1.80 per kilo. It has been through the grinder 2X & is very easy for dogs to digest. I buy veggies at Coles & Woollies, & add microwaved frozen spinach $99 cents a box, fresh microwaved sweet potato's $3.00 a kilo & frozen microwaved julienne carrots &2.00 for 500 grams & I freeze in patties for my dogs.

  2. Vets can spin it if they have a centrifuge in-house, not all clinics have them.

The clinic that said they send it locally probably don't realise where it goes, although it would tell them in their handbook!

Unless the Greencross lab is doing them??

Is a vet likely to hand over a vial of blood to a client for them to send it overseas. I know my vet will, but unsure if this is "normal and acceptable practice" or not

    and out of interest

if I want blood drawn - do a need a consult to do this - or can a vet nurse do it (no I don't want results interpreted or need to chat to anybody about it)

If it has to be done as part of a consult - are there added charges to draw the blood?

IF it is a VET I use regularly, for multiple dogs, they will come out to the lobby, draw blood & send it away without a consult fee.

I do NOT use ASAP Labs in Fitzroy Vic. cause they charge about $350.00 for the same tests I can get done by VetPath in WA for $75.00

  3. Can one of my Victorian Friends help me please.

I am after a vet around the Brunswick West area who does titre testing - and pushing the boundaries - does anybody know how much they charge for parvo and distemper?

I am spoilt living in the West and so close to VetPath biggrin.gif

    Many thanks

I pay about $75.00 for each dog for titre testing . My vet Bob Cavey, Ultimate Vet in Narre Warren South sends blood to VetPath in WA.

  4. A good night at the German Breeds Trial ........Congratulations to Sue & her oh so adorable black Mini Schnauzer, "Waldo". They finished their NOVICE title with 192 points. I am so happy for Jodie & her young Boxer "Ollie" R.A.E., who finished their Novice title with 190 points

I was thrilled with my own very enthusiastic Standard Poodle Dual CH., "ROXY" UDX RAE JDX AD ET who gained her 1st Pass towards her OB. GR.CH. title with 193 points in U.D.X. Class

  5. The venue has been changed to Holm Park on Beaconsfield-Emerald Rd. This is a new venue so don't know which oval they will be using.

If coming from Cranbourne, head out on Princes Hwy through Berwick, as you come into Beaconsfield you will pass Akoonah Park on the left where the main Aggie show is then turn left at the lights into Beaconsfield-Emerald Rd, continue along until you see Holm Park on right, guess it would be about 500-750m along.

Thanks so much for attaching the flier. Where did you get it? This was not what appeared in my Dogs Vic. Gazette. I must have missed the note about the venue change in Dogs Vic Gazette

  6. How did you know about chNge to Holm Park?? Is this common knowledge??

It is common knowledge, page 2 (In the schedule part of the magazine) of the January Gazette!!

I'm surprised that some don't read the gazette, as talking to a few at the last weekend show, some didn't even know the venue has changed nor even read about it in last months gazette....

I usually read the Gazette from cover to cover Not sure how I missed the venue change?? Must have scanned it too quickly?/ Thanks all who kindly gave me directions/info.

  7. The flier says Beaconsfield Rec. Reserve Emerald Road Beaconsfield Emerald Road Beaconsfield

I have not been there before & would much appreciate it if someone would give me

    1- directions coming from Cranbourne

2- any info. on parking situation at the site

    3-what gate to enter

    Please P.M. me

    Thanks very much!!!

  8. I believe in titre testing OR vaccinating with C #3 at 14 months. I am not a Vet It is just my somewhat educated "assumption" that the immune system is not fully developed at the time of the 2nd puppy C #3. IF the dog showed sufficient immunity at 14 months, I would not re-vaccinate. I would titre test again at 3 years & every 3 years after. JMHOFWIW

  9. give a 1st C#3 vaccinate at 7 1/2 -8 weeks & again at 13 -14 weeks then again at 14 months with a C#3. I then titre

My dogs all go to dogs shows, trials, dog parks, beaches etc on a multiple times per week basis . My 15 year old was last vaccinated at 14 months & still has a very high titre.

FWIW, there MAY be dogs that are regularly vaccinated who for whatever reasons, have a low titre.

As an non Vet, I can only tentatively conclude that the dogs immune system get stimulated from constant exposure from being out & about. I am assuming that dogs that have limited regular exposure outside their own back yards are most at risk when suddenly kennelled.

I have never ever vaccinated for Kennel Cough. A few months ago, I babysat a dog that was mostly kept in back yard or walked in local streets on lead. This dog had been vaccinated yearly for Kennel Cough. The following morning after arriving I noticed the visiting dog had a loud hacking cough &vomited a small amount of foamy liquid. This dog had already slept in my room close to my dogs & drank from my own dog's water bowl played with them etc. Not one of my 4 dogs, (none vaccinated for K.C.),ranging from 15 years to 12 months, contracted a cough or any illness. I went to the chemist as instructed by my Vet & bought children's cough syrup. The visitor stopped coughing & was better in 3 days

  10. I put the details on the other thread for my recommendations for titre testing in ACT.

Interestingly enough, while my regular vet may not be as knowledgeable on titre testing (hence my decision to use Kate Millhouse at Holistic Paws) she is the first to admit that she doesn't agree with giving dogs a KC vaccine and would prefer people take measures to prevent the spread (eg not allowing your dog to say hello to every other dog at the trial) and to see dog clubs remove communal drinking bowls. We have never had an issue with KC, even when it has been around, however, we also never allow our dogs to drink out of any container that isn't ours, we do not allow anyone else's dog to use our containers, and our dogs don't say hello to other dogs at training, trials etc. We only give an intranasal vacc to puppies and to older dogs who may be weaker and less able to fight it. Oh, and the few dogs that have got pet insurance as at least if they happen to contract it and require vet attention we can claim back on the associated vet costs.

  11. All Natural Vet Care, Russell Lea (Sydney, NSW) http://naturalvet.com.au/

Def no resistance there, it's their preferred method (but they don't push it, however they do assume people going there have some desire for the more natural things ;)

Thanks!!!! Please everyone, send in a list of Holistic or happy to titre to check immunity levels, in lieu of routine vaccinations, Vets in your state/cities

  12. Personally, I occasionally buy online, a one dose parvo shot and do my dogs myself.

Rebanne where do you buy your parvo shot from? I'm quite comfortable giving injections and this is the only one I really would like to do a bit more often as we don't put dogs in kennels, etc

In the U.S.A, almost all the breeders I knew did their own C#3 puppy shots at 7 weeks of age, They & I ordered their vaccine to be sent on ice from DRS. Foster & Smith, an online vet supply company. The average cost of a Protek brand C#3. At that time, (about 10 years ago, with postage the cost was about $1.50 each when one ordered 6 or more). Rabies (unlike Australia) is an issue in USA must be done by a VET as it is a legally required vaccine & one needs Vet certified paperwork proving one's dog has had a 1st Rabies shot at 6 months of age.

  13. (Please note; I have also put my request/comments below, on the Health forum)

I would appreciate assistance in putting together a list of VETS with contact details, (all states/cities) personally recommended by people on this forum

Please feel free to E Mail me privately, or if allowed on this forum, to list here, VETS in all states that are open to more modern methods/protocols.

My puppy buyers are encountering enormous resistance to titre testing from the various Vets they go to.

In fact 1 particular QLD. Vet argued strongly to one of my puppy buyers that they MUST protect their dog by having a yearly C#7 PLUS a yearly heartworm injection PLUS monthly worming. (Sarcastically speaking, I wondered if he also asked; "Would you like immune mediated diseases with that"?)

Recently, I rang a Vet I have used in the past, to see if he would do a titre on my dogs & on future puppy buyers dogs, after they complete their 14 month old C #3. He said he "had only ever reluctantly done 1 titre test on a very elderly dog that had a strong adverse reaction from it's yearly vaccination". He said that "the OWNER insisted on the titre even though that it cost $300 from ASAP in Melbourne" . He said although his own young dog "has severe immune related skin allergies, & is on cortisone for life, that his dog HAS to get yearly C 5 because it comes to work with him & may be exposed to diseases from patients dogs"

I told him about VETPATH in W.A. & he was temporarily speechless.

Resistance by Vets seems to be a very common reaction.

  15. Thought some people might find this video interesting :)

ETA: I personally would not be comfortable going to a vet who pushed for yearly vaccination. It isn't in line with AVA vaccination protocols or the latest research.

I think the video should be watched by all pet owners! I would very much like to include a link to the video with all the other information I give to my puppy buyers. I am technically challenged & would appreciate assistance in how to forward the video by E Mail. I tried copying the URL, but it would not let me paste to an E Mail

    Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. I strongly disagree with all the doomsayers here. Dogs also have bad days if it was my dog I would carry on as usual, probably restrict ball play keep her closer and keep an eye on her for a while. I would also have given the poodle owners a serve.

Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk

And the next time it happened and the dog killed the small dog, would you give the owner a serve then?

Not saying the OPs dog would kill another dog but the point is you don't know.

This is one reason I don't use dog parks, they are accidents waiting to happen. People like you Canetoad would take a dog to the park even when you know it has attacked another dog before and there's every likelihood it would again. The worst thing you can do in this situation is allow the dog to rehearse the behavior, it will become more ingrained and habitual.

what the OP needs to do is get professional help to help her understand and modify the behaviour :)

I agree completely. Many people have the idea that Labs are big soppy over friendly. I witnessed 2 incidents recently at the same large sanctioned off lead dog area. A large yellow Lab, in both cases

causing serious damage. In the 1st incident, the Lab was accompanied by a pre - teen age boy when medium size, appropriately friendly, Cavalier Spaniel giving off submissive signals (head lowered & to the side, tail down, approaching slowly & side on) dog approached him. The Lab smashed into the dog, throwing it on to the ground, stood over it & & bit hard, causing multiple deep wounds to the

dogs neck & belly. In the 2nd incident, the same Lab was accompanied by a middle aged couple, who were throwing a ball for it. Two GSD pups, about 5 months of age, were playing together, approx. 50 meters from where the Lab's ball landed. The Lab ran past his ball, & jumped on one of the 6 month old Shepherd puppies, causing wounds to the ear & the neck & front leg. In both cases, the persons walking collected the Lab & literally ran off as quickly as possible, without even apologizing, nor checking to see what injuries their dog had done.. I highly respect the people on Dogzonline Reactive Dogs thread, which is a sub forum under Training Forum. I am sure they have a huge amount of useful advice to offer. IMHO, There is such a thing as a dog giving a scary threatening warning, & if that display does not work to resort to inhibited biting. BIG DIFFERENCE is any dog which causes serious damage, That dog needs to be restricted until such time as one deals with ALL the underlying issues. At least temporarily, I would use a muzzle even when the dog is on lead & NOT let it interact freely with other dogs. AND carry something to warn off any dogs that may decide to approach yours. JMHOFWIW

  17. The show is usually outside.

Are you coming to watch or are you showing again?

Hope the rain waits until the afternoon, hate showing indoors.

I am not showing a Poodle at the moment. Will be with friend with another breed.

Just trying to figure out if shade/shelter is needed

  18. I've seen Mals out herding. They are pretty handy too. They are more suited to a C course than the usual A course though.

Very proud of my pups today. Took 12 month old Poodle, Daisy, & 6 month old Belgian Malinois, ZARA, to KCC Park State Dog Centre for the DOGS BIG DAY OUT. It was so popular this year, that traffic was blocked for 2KM down the road to the entrance. Several Hundred dogs of a very wide variety of breeds & a couple thousand people attended. DAISY & ZARA met most of those hundreds of dogs, all breeds, as well as kids & adults of all shapes & sizes My girls were so calm & friendly, taking everything in their stride . The highlight of the day for me was "ZARA", having her 1st Sheep Herding experience in the Herding Demo ring. I was told she did absolutely "everything she was supposed to do" & that she is ready to start weekly formal lessons. YIPEE !!!! I am so excited to begin a new venture into Herding competition. Poor Daisy the Poodle, she wanted soooo badly to get a turn in the sheep pen, but Poodles are not on the list of eligible breeds in OZ, so she did not get her chance (SIGH). Will be keeping them BOTH busy with Rally O. Conformation, Obedience etc next year. On the down side I finally got an air conditioner installed late afternoon yesterday. Let the girls out at 6AM & in the 3 hours it took me to get ready to take them out, they chewed through the insulation hose....That was quick.... I find Standard Poodles as well as my Malinois to be very demanding as youngsters but both are wonderful to train & live with.

  19. Well hello everyone, first appearance :)

I have an approx 4-5yo English Pointer X, and I want to find a reciprocal dogsitting arrangment for her.

So far she was staying with friends with small dogs, and if my friends where away, I would stay there with Zara. (also a cat and rabbit - she seems save with everything bar possums maybe ;))

However I sometimes travel WITH these friends !! And I can't bear the thought of putting Zara in a kennel. She is a little spoilt :)

I would have thought there are many such arrangements in place, however I can't find anything here on the forums !!

Does anyone have experience with this, or is it mostly something everyone does with friends they already know ?

Ideally I'd like to find a similar breed owner who also from time to time has to go away. It would be a means of socializing my Zara a little more (she's shy), obviously having someone she will know after a while, saving money, all the usual...

I'd been thinking about this for a while, but just know start asking as a dog sitter has just pulled out on me for next week... so if anyone also has any suggestions for late notice sitting in Bayside Melbourne, that would be great !!

    Silvia

Where (suburb) are you located/ How often do you need a sitter?

  20. PLEASE SHARE. A baby Belgian Shepherd puppy, NORDENSTAMM ALVIRA, was very recently stolen, from her new owner's yard/home, when left unsupervised for an hour. STOLEN IN WOONONA/SYDNEY/WOOLONGONG AREA! I have attached a photo is of my ZARA which was taken at 6 weeks. Pup is similar looking . Pup is micro chipped - everyone please ask others to keep an eye out for anyone in the Sydney vicinity with a new Malinois pup, FEMALE, 8 weeks. Please give any info. to Alison Kollenberg, Nordenstaam Kennels
