This Is What It Looks Like...

Haven't seen greyhounds or whippets mentioned at all using this training method. Does it work for them as well or are they beyond hope??? -
Does she sleep in a crate? My new pup slept best in a crate for the first cause it made him feel secure - less area to defend from burglars. Are you ignoring the crying or getting up to comfort her? If you are getting up, she may be enjoying the extra attention Both my pups were different, Bella howled for 6 nights and Bruno only did a little whimper every hour which I ignored and stopped after three days. Not sure what else to recommend. Good luck.

Help! Dog Had A Seizure Just Now!
BrunoBella replied to openarms's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
No they certainly don't swallow their tongues. Pretty hard to do if you've ever seen how big a whole tongue is They can bite their tongues but this is not usually a major problem and is hard to prevent. Best first aid is to reassure the dog and protect it from injury - eg move hard objects out of the way, put head on your lap and provide comfort. It's pretty scary for dogs as well as their humans. -
Excellen tip Pax. I'll be able to catch men with foot fetishes now cause my feet are all soft . Have been doing some Dremel "knockoff" acclimitisation using myself as test subject. Thanks for all the tips guys. Rob 6014 giving up is not in my vocabulary, I just find another way to do what has to be done..

Kennel cough bugs live in the nose/throat so if you touch a dog you should wash your hands before touching a non-infected one. Also keep them from rubbing noses with healthy dogs. The other thing i have learned from Kennel cough is not to walk the dogs on a collar (flat collar/martingale/choker) for weeks afterwards as this huts their throat badly and makes them cough more. I used a halti instead or you can use a walking harness - this is after the dog is well enough to walk. Rest is very important.

Help! Dog Had A Seizure Just Now!

That was my next question too? How's it going?? -
Thanks for the info guys. Will purchase a dremmel as I have two black nailed dogs. I already handle Bella's feet reqularly as my "Delicate Little Angel" (all 30kgs) often comes to me with sticks and stones stuck between her toes. A half metre one once. I check her feet and toes all the time cause she has had so many of these :D

Help! Dog Had A Seizure Just Now!

Not sure about dogs, I'm more of an expert on human ailments! sidoney reckons wait till morning. Has he got a temperature or any signs he is ill - apart from being groggy which is normal after a seizure? Looks like someone will have to keep a close eye on him overnight. Actually, you might be best to ring a vet and ask them what they suggest.. If he was mine we would already be at the afterhours clinic but I've never had a dog having seizures just people :D -

If he's never had seizures take to an afterhours vet. Could be a minor problem or some sort of head injury. If he's had one seizure he could have more. What is his general health like? -

I don't see anything! -
Crating or gating inside is a great solution when it's too cold/yukky to be outside. Puppies can get into a lot of trouble in 3 minutes with you not paying full attention as I have found out If your kitchen has 1 door than gating is heaps cheaper than buying a crate. A crate, on the other hand, is more flexible and can be used in any room, on holidays or outside.

Glad to see that the Chloe ended up sleeping in closer. She will learn to sleep in the bathroom fine. Bella and Bruno both cried the first few nights in the laundry, I fed them in there during the day and they settled in fine after a few days. I still remember the racket Bella made on her first night I did buy bruno a soft sided basket (fully machine washable, about $40) which he loves to death and helped him to settle in the laundry. Dogs in nature dig themselves a hollow which is protected on three sides as a defence again attacks (this is my very layman interpretation). I found this instinct makes them crave small spaces and is probably why they love crates so much. Have a play around with bedding and location in the bathroom to see if you can find what makes Chloe comfortable and safe. I also have a dog gate on the laundry so the dogs can have their share of the heating and so they can see me. This was a big hit although I did get Bella to sleep with a closed door in the laundry when I first got her, it was summer and she didn't need the heating then My dogs have beautiful amber eyes, what about Chloe?

And about time too. I've been waiting for updated photos. Chloe is lovely I love the white tip on her tail!

Amazing about the rock eating puppies. My dogs are obviously fussy about their garbage
-
Great that you found a solution Puppies will stick anything in their mouths but won't eat rocks. My pup likes to chew on sticks - and this is not recommended due to possible splinters - I make sure there are lots of toys/chews for him to chew and direct him to these instead. I've never seen a puppy eat a rock, they're not very exciting really. My older dog used to eat apricots that fell from my large apricot tree I asked the vet if this was dangerous and he said no as long as she didn't eat too many pips (they contain very small amount of toxins). Bella has been eating apricots for 2 years and just gets the runs  Most things in the garden cannot do any harm. There are some flowers, like oleander, which can make dogs sick - not sure of any more details. I'm lucky Bruno is such a bruiser and can't squeeze under my gate. Your little poodle probably could though!
-
Excellent, will try it a bit more with Bruno then as I hate crating him just so I can go out. He has so much fun outside  I do believe bigger, high energy dogs love to be outside, my GSPs certainly prefer it (unless its really really really cold). I also spend a lot of time outside with them and they come in to watch telly in the evening. Bella likes "Inspector Rex"
-
Sounds like your enjoying your puppy! You will sort it all out. It is all trial and error, and just like having a baby, everyone has an opinion on what you should be doing  so just do what you feel is right. I wanna see more pictures!!

Good question Mitzy. When I had my first pup (Bella) I was having my fences replaced so she was in a big pen outside while I was away. I can't remember when I left her in the yard by herself. With my new puppy, Bruno, who is nearly 11 weeks, I leave him outside when I'm home (most of the time as I work from home) and lock him up when I'm out. I'm not sure when to leave them out safely either as he has a big sister who is a big pup (2.5 yrs) and I'm definitely not ready to trust them outside together yet. I was thinking another couple of weeks when he gets a bit taller and can fit through the dog door. I have done a few experiments with going to the neighbour's across the road while the two are playing together (I can hear yelping from there) and they played nicely together. I also experimented with leaving Bruno in the big pen and Bella outside the pen but that caused lots of crying from both dogs What do other people suggest?
