  1. What "inherent value" comes from crossbreeding sighthounds? What would other breeds or crossbreeds bring to the Whippet? I remain intrigued by the notion that society's attitude to dogs is driven by the breeding practices of a minority. I think issues such as increasing disconnection from animals across the board play their part. And major animal welfare organisations being steered by people who don't believe in companion animals is another factor. The recommendations in the Greyhound report that see LC owner prohibited from owning other pets come from the RSPCA. They wanted it to be unlawful for ALL sighthound owners to have cats. And it is the RSPCA who've been handed the job of rehoming the Greys. How many do you think they are going to kill as "unsuitable" for pet homes. "Cat friendly greyhounds" don't exist in their universe.
  2. So this is a sport for pet dogs of all breeds and crossbreeds that has no live baiting, no wastage and no gambling. Result? Restrictions, legislation and criminalisation of participants. Just fantastic. Last attempt. You ban one environment where things aren't doing well and it will have flow on effects to other environments. How can not? The whole environment that supports dogs is a single environment. There is a belief in the K.Cs that pedigree dogs are the future- Nothing wrong with that belief, except that it comes with a DIS- belief there can be any future in non pedigree dogs. That Disbelief is actively promoted in the community. Destroying its appreciation and understanding of any purpose for dogs in the community. Unless you happen to be part of a K.C registered body. ( which sees itself as distinct from the general community anyway) Every time a part of that community environment is lost it has flow on effects for the K.Cs .And vise versa. This is entirely predictable. So glad we're supporting your theory. Bully for you. Wish it felt better from the inside. You do realise that crossbred dogs are captured by this too?
  3. I am the President of the NSW Lure Coursing Association and wrote the post Lhok shared. "Unintended consequences" aren't very comfortable on the receiving end. We are in shock but gearing up to fight this if we have to. We are not self regulated. We are ANKC regulated

  6. Yes. Sheridan's is an accurate precis. FFS I'm trying to save your sorry 'victim' butts, poor you and poor my my breed. Guess you are on your own. Suggest you start by explaining how you are saving poor us in language we can comprehend.
  7. If there is ever a ban placed on the breeding of dogs with specific conformation it wont be only placed on those who are only breeding dogs with traceable pedigrees or those who only place importance on them. There are many many more people who are breeding dogs with brachy heads than those who use a pedigree system who will be affected .The banning of Scottish fold cats doesnt mention a pedigree or whether someone even has a pedigree for the cat or if they are wiythin the cat pedigree system - its about how the cat looks. The pedigree system has already done what they wanted and made it against their codes to breed close relatives because some u beaut professor decided that it was all about in breeding rather than selection. The Pedigree system, like the Grey hound industry, is not an inclusive cultural identity. Its an exclusive one. No. Banns won't only affect pedigrees. They will affect cultural standards and values. Because they won't be shared. Again, Its a single species and can't be divided along lines of value. What reduces one section of the environment reduces all in one way or another. Less resources available for purpose. We lose purpose. Sharing values through inclusive cultures allows for the best of all demonstrated values to be chosen in support of any specific purpose, adding to it. Exclusive cultures do the opposite. Reducing the 'standards' (or values) we accept reduces the species. Its all those standards and values together that allow the community to choose from those that ADD to their purpose. It's divided along lines of known ancestry and predictability of characteristics and traits vs random breeding. You seem to be attributing attributes to the idea of a pedigree in and of itself having value. It doesn't. A pedigree is simply a record of ancestry and proves that the animal has the ancestry listed. Some people value certain attributes and characateristics in a dog and selectively breed for them. That facilitates choice. What the hell any of this has to do with the ban on greyhound racing is utterly beyond me. The sport is not being banned because the dogs have pedigrees. They don't have ANKC pedigrees anyway. Cynical use of this decision to promote an anti-pedigree dog agenda? Hardly in the spirit of this forum.
  8. Research barrier aggression. Sometimes nice dogs do bad things.
  9. Tell the other owner you'll pay to repair the fence. That needs to be done ASAP
  10. Get a Boxer bitch. Lessens the comparison and your dog will be happy to have a companion that speaks Boxer. Body language matters. My view is that dogs speak best with their own breed.
  11. Of course there is. It's the model followed in most American states that the anti-racing brigade would have you believe have banned it. No "commercial" racing. No professional trainers. Just hobby people racing the dogs they keep at home. And a whole bunch of regulation.
  12. The ANKC is 20% of the dog breeding sector. And that excludes Greyhounds
  13. Go to Facebook and join the Australian Dog Show Newbies group. You'll get a ton of help there. You should also ask your dog's breeder.
  14. MM: This kind of rhetoric sounds fine in theory. In reality there are a myriad of conflicting values held by society and it is up to the democratic process to resile them. A process thrown to the wind by Mr Baird by his picking one of 78 recommendations from the Commission's report and announcing it as a done deal. Where is the community deciding THIS as a whole??? The amount of misinformation surrounding this issue is, quite simply, astounding. Most people are responding emotionally. Fair enough. But they are responding to limited facts and a deliberate campaign of misinformation. Lets start with the "facts" that Greyhound racing is banned in most US states. And Greyhounds all sleep 22 hours a day and will be thrilled to live in your 2 bedroom flat while you work 10 hours a day.
  15. Lets be upfront about this. Resource guarding has a genetic component. Some breeds are more prone to it than others. Now we have a pup from two breeds that have different combinations of bite inhibition, bite threshold and protectiveness. The person who allowed this mating should be shot IMO. Dogs ain't dogs when it comes to these traits. These two breeds are worlds apart in those traits and what combination the pup has is anyone's guess. But at any rate we have a pup raising concerns for its owner. What OUR dogs do is beside the point. We are dealing with THIS dog. THIS dog is worrying its owner. If I was going to provide any internet advice to look at it would be Patricia McConnells And I'd also suggest a personal visit from someone who is going to do better than suggest a spray bottle or that this is a dominance issue. IF this pup escalates it won't be pretty. Best it be sorted or at least managed ASAP.
  16. I hazard to suggest that none of your dogs has resource guarding instincts
  17. Of course he does. Put the food in a bowl, the dog in a crate and the problem is solved. Anything else provides the opportunity for the dog to guard from others. If there are children in the house, you should buy a crate TOMORROW.
  18. Currently most of the enforcement powers lie with the RSPCA. They hardly have a shining track record of acting to get the prosecutions that make it easier to turf people out.
  19. I suspect the easy way to do this will be to run it through a Dogs Vic affiliate. Most of those insurance policies cover events regardless of whether they are held on club grounds or not. The devil will be in the detail of the Affiliate's policy.
  20. Really? Which vets and venues in Victoria would those be? Have you ever actually attended an event or are you plucking this stuff out of thin air? I thought lure coursing was done at KCC Park? They chase a lure on a very small, under regulation course. Im pretty sure there are no tight turns. There hasn't been an ANKC LC trial in the State yet. No, it's completely straight. Then it isn't lure coursing.
  21. I haven't seen that statement of acceptance made by anyone. Things have to change. Things were changing. All I hope is that the opportunity to see if the changes are successful is given. Hence why I didn't quote anyone here. But the numbers have been staggering for a long long time. The numbers are also rubbery.
