  1. Hey Perth Royal Show peeps..this is my first royal and I have no clue what to expect. How much space do you get as your 'bench' area? I tend to spread my crap around at CAWA so this is going to be a challenge! Do you bring your own chairs or do they provide them? Is there room enough for 2 chairs if you are only showing one dog? Can people actually just reach out and touch your dog or is there a bit of space between the public and your dog?My boy is only going to be 9 months old so I dont want him completely traumatised, I read that the dog muct be visible to the public, but surely I can put the flaps on his crate down for him to rest in peace for a while. Where do you take the dogs for a loo break? do I need to bring my own poo bags? Is there anything that you take that is really useful at the royal in particular, that you wouldnt normally take to a regular show? Is there a sign on your area saying what your dogs name or catalogue number is? I have been to the show heaps as a general showgoer but never taken any notice of any of this type of stuff! I have taken my kids around the pavillion collecting the hole punches to go in the entry box(no idea what it was ever for lol), I surely wouldnt be one of the exhibitors who would have a hole punch next to them would I? I have a Brittany so its not a well known breed.Should I have a info sheet on what the breed is because they arent known or not worry about that sort of thing? You are able to bring your own food and drinks in arent you? I am having a bit of a problem with the show ppl letting me bring my kids in with me when I arrive to set up, apparently they need to have passes to get in gate 11. I emailed and asked for clarification as I thought kids 12 & under were free this year and dont require tickets, but they have emailed me back and said they need pre purchased passes or will need to come in the general gate after 9am with another adult. So I have left a msg for her to ring me as I will have them in the car when I arrive and I cant leave them at the front gate on their own. I dont know what I will do if they arent allowed in?
  2. I'm now deciding between the NoztoNoz and the k9 soft crates. I've seen the NoztoNoz and they seem quite robust and great quality. I see on the website the the k9 royal2 is insulated on the roof, does this make much difference?
  3. You can pick up good quality lunging leads from Horseland for $20 :)
  4. Hahaha Im glad Obi isnt quite that destructive :)
  5. Im wondering what you look for when buying your crates. I show my dog and have a collapsible metal crate at the moment, I bought this one to start with because of the risk of him chewing etc. It is great but it is getting heavy to lug around to shows, plus its a pain to collapse it so I want to get a soft crate now I am confident he will not destroy it! I dont really know what I should be looking for when buying a soft crate so Im asking my fellow DOLers what you look for in a crate. He is a medium size dog (Brittany), the metal crate I have is a VEBO one in a Large 90cm long,60cm high,55cm wide, I dont want to go any smaller, Im actually thinking of going one size up so I could possibly get my German Shepherd in it if I had to.I am going to buy him a metal crate as well, he hasnt ever been crate trained so a metal one will suit him better to start. Opinions, experiences, recommendations?
  6. I have the puppy one from K9 Pro (10m long) which has been good for my pup while he is going through selective deafness, although I always tangle myself up in it! I like the longer length myself, I was going to make one but the K9 pro one was only $20 so I bought it instead. I also have a horse lunging lead which has a great handle on the end and is soft in my hands too, I find that this one is fantastic when Im taking my naughty teen out and he wants to gallop around to burn off energy.I have had this one for many years so cant remember how much it cost but I love it :)
  7. Hmmm.... I think I do need a collar on my dogs mainly because while they are safe at home I do have lots of kids coming in and out of my house constantly, the risk of a dog slipping out the front door behind a few of them is a worry. A collar is something the kids can grab fairly easily rather than a handful of fur or skin. The dogs never try to 'do a runer' with me or my hubby, but if its the boys and their mates then they are out like a shot! I live on a fairly busy street which also means if they get out then the risk to their safety is a big concern. The big dog necklaces look like they wouldnt leave too much of a mark, I will have a look at some rolled leather ones too, until I can either talk hubby into moving to a quieter area or convince council we can build a big fence, or teach my kids to never leave the doors open!
  8. I am fairly new to showing and enjoying it, but I am having a bit of trouble with every day collars. I like my dog to wear a collar, but all of the normal collars seem to leave an indent on his neck fur that stays there after taking it off. I have been leaving him without a collar to prevent this happening but its a pain not having a collar on him, I am using a mendota slip lead for walks at the moment. Someone told me I need to have his rego tags on him so I do a want a collar for normal use. What do ppl use?
  9. I would love to find a nice thin plaited leather show lead/martingale too, I am using a soft puppy martingale at the moment because my Brit hates a chain, but I want a more 'grown up' looking one.
  10. Whereabouts in Osborne park is it? And do they sell animals as I won't go there if they do. have a great time you two, best of luck Ness so sorry to hear you're still having issues with Kenz, I really hope you get a good result in the end with her Its on Frobisher st, they dont sell animals, I wouldnt go there either if they did :)
  11. totally loving the Boxer
  12. Good luck Ptolomy & Bedazzled, have a great weekend!!
  13. I think it was $20 for a 4 kg bag of the puppy dry food, I know it was heaps cheaper than Royal Canin which is what I feed normally
  14. I agree with most of the other posts on here too. I had my 2 GSDs before I had my first baby, I was extremely sick, my baby had colic & reflux, I had no family support and a husband who worked 12 hr shifts. I ended up with PND, I did get really resentful of my dogs at times, they would bark when I had just got the baby to sleep (poor things were bored shitless probably) or want a pat at the worst times and when my husband came home he would lavish attention on them, so I got annoyed about that too. I was one big hormonal mess , but the dogs coped, they were outside a lot more for a period of time, & they were semi neglected for a while, but they coped, we got through it and they became my sons best friends and protectors. Its a time of adjustment for everyone in your household, dogs included so it is going to take a while to work itself out, even though you think you settle into a bit of a rythmn babies have a tendency to almost sense this and they throw a spanner in the works, everything goes pear shaped again for a while. My poor husband walked around on egg shells for 12 months,it does get better though, hang in there, the dogs will be fine. :D
  15. My all time favorite breed is the GSD, then Brittany, both smart, trainable, energetic dogs. I do prefer the shepherd though mainly because of the protection element, I like a dog that I feel has my back, my Brittany is way too cute to deter a would be robber! I do also like beagles, boxers, malamutes, labrador puppies, the scottie dog on the old chum ad, ACDs, kelpies, bernese, the list is pretty endless :) Actually I am finding it hard to stop thinking up other breeds I could list as a favorite! My list of least favorites are chinese crested, Ive never actually met one & they are probably lovely but I like dogs with lots of fur to cuddle. Also not keen on the bull breeds like pits, am staffs, mastiff x's although I can appreciate that lots of other ppl love them, just not my cup of tea. Im not keen on the pekinese, papillon or chi types of little dogs because I am so scared I would step on them and break them.Im not partial to a lot of the pound dogs either only because of some of their strange looks, I know there are some of the best dogs in there, very superficial of me I know
  16. I have just been to the new My Pet Warehouse that opened in Osborne Park over the weekend. Anyone Perth based wants to buy Black Hawk dog food they stock it there :)
  17. So what is 'Natures miracle'? and where do you get it from? Where can I buy the Aerfectant? Are they both expensive? I bought Natures Miracle from City Farmers, it was about $15 for a 700ml bottle, I did see it cheaper somewhere after I had bought it but cant remember where..annoying! "Aro-Fectant 5%" I bought from Rural West which is a wholesaler here in Perth www.ruralwest.com.au it was only about $12 for a 5 litre container. Its a disinfectant concentrate for use in piggeries, dairies, stables & kennels
  18. Pleased to report there is no odours out there today!
  19. Gosh Ness, thats awful, I feel for you. It has to be so tough having to weigh up the pro's and con's of what path you take with Kenz. Damned if you do, damned if you dont, so hard to decide what to do Lucky Kenz having an owner who is so tuned in and cares so much. Take care of yourself as well while you look after her xoxo
  20. I bought the wahl KMSS single speed kit for $165. I was looking at the 2 speed or the andis, but she said I wouldnt need the 2 speed, thats more for clipping larger areas so you can go a bit faster, the andis is more expensive and is heavier,it is a bit quieter, but no a huge amount apparently, it ws a fair bit more expensive too. I have never clipped a dog before so I was completely uneducated about what to look for, etc. The lady I spoke to on the phone was very helpful and patient answering all my questions about the different blades, lengths and how to use it. I need a clipper for my Brittany who I am showing, I do trim his feet but I use scissors for that
  21. I bought some clippers from the ppl at Clipper World just yesterday! I wasnt sure which one would suit me best so I rang them, she talked me into buying the cheaper one than I had originally been thinking about and was very helpful. Id recommend phoning them, great service, very helpful and not pushy at all!
  22. I tryed the baking soda, didnt do much I found an odour neutraliser called Natures Miracle for my paved areas, so this morning I splashed 'arofectant' (an disinfectant animal safe) and hot water first and scrubbed with a big broom, then I hosed it off and splashed the Natures Miracle around. I will let you know tommorrow if it helps! I have done the lime on the lawn, it works quite well IMO.
  23. Thats a great way to discourage them Arcane! I just dont understand why ppl breed with their unpapered, unregistered dogs. I have a male dog that I am showing and then doing obedience etc with, hopefully he will be good enough to breed with, but if he isnt a really good example of his breed when he is mature than he will get the snip very quickly! I would never in good concience breed from a dog who while having a great temperament isnt up to scratch conformation wise. These ppl need to go visit some animal shelters and see the amount of dogs that are pts because of unthinking & uneducated dog owners breeding with their pets.So sad
  24. That is awesome Suz!!!! What fantastic dogs!
