  1. I'd just keep walking with my own dogs & ignore her & her dog unless it comes over the road towards you now. It sounds like you stopped because you didn't want either a doggy confrontation or her dog running across the road, if she is confident her dog won't leave her property then there's nothing you can do, well intentioned or not. My dog will bark & growl at ppl walking past, but if he is out the front he is on a long line & can't get loose. Some ppl do get a bit scared when they see him, obviously thinking he is off lead so I can understand how you would stop & wait while her dog was contained to avoid a possible catastrophe. On the flip side, I can see how she could have misread the situation and perhaps thought you were being rude or confrontational. If someone came in to my front yard & told me how to handle my dog I'd react badly, regardless of how my dog was behaving. It's like critising someone's parenting in their own house IMO. Even if they are crap I wouldn't say a word unless I had no choice!
  2. The stone looks like its so easy to use on the Eric Salas video tho! He makes it look so simple! I was looking at getting the pupkus brand thinning shears but they are made by Wahl ( Wahl doesn't have the best rep in human hair tools) so now I'm not sure which ones to get.
  3. Thx for explaining ,, I think I get the difference between the two now. I don't need a knife :)
  4. I just bought a suit from this lady in Perth, she has a great range :D https://www.facebook.com/#!/dressedto.win
  5. I am looking around trying to decide which thinning scissors I should buy.Im a showing newbie and so am new to the grooming that needs to be done. Im showing a Brittany, recommended tools are one sided thinning scissors but there are so many different brands around!! I need to get rid of all the fluffy bits on his ears and generally trim the coat up and I need some good thinning scissors.I dont want them to fail after a couple of uses, but I also dont want to pay an arm and a leg for them either. What ones have ppl used with success? Where did you buy them? And the big question, how much were they and how long have they lasted? I have also looked on the net about grooming, saw a video by a Eric Salas who used a stone, thinning knife and not the scissors. It looked a bit easier than using the scissors? But I could be very wrong as everyone I have asked uses the scissors, no one has even mentioned using a stone. What is the difference between a thinning scissor and a stripping knife? Its probably really obvious but Im a dummy with all these tools, I have no clue about how they all differ.
  6. Hi, Im not going to give you any advice,I am brand new to the show ring myself. All of the advice the others have given you is great :) I just wanted to pop in and share what has been my experience so far. Ive only been in 3 shows so far, and was completely terrified before my first one. But the judges, stewards and ppl at that show were fantastic! They were very welcoming to a newcomer and it didnt matter that I couldnt really stack my dog, I was given some tips and came away having had fun. My pup was/is a wriggle pot, so I got a set of the show stackers last week and totally love them, I have been able to see & feel what the proper stacked look is from where I am standing with them which I wasnt able to do before, I was using a mirror, but I need all the help I can get  Im sure you arent doing as badly as you think, we are always our own worst critic
  7. Congratulations!! Obi got one too, even though he was the only dog in his breed there it was still a bit exciting
  8. Oh Ptolomy, she is so beautiful! I totally love your puppy pics, I had no idea Toller babies were so incredibly gorgeous :)
  9. Doofus  Puppy teeth fall out all the time. The most important thing is that the judges you choose to show your puppy to. A bad judge can do untold damage to a teething puppy. After I sat down and thought about it, I was like DOH!!!! I will be sure to tell the judge on Saturday that he is teething :D
  10. HIya, Quick question.. we have our first show in minor this Saturday and my puppy had a front tooth fall out tonight! Will he be disqualified because of this? Or am I being a doofus?
  11. I shared the fb link with the warning on it. Then I looked at the missing Bulldog Tanks fb page and I cannot believe that there have been people post rude, heartless comments on there!!! What is the world coming to?? I hope they find the people responsible for the dogs going missing and that at least some of the dogs find their way back to their owners
  12. you poor thing, I was really sick for both of my pregnancies,so I feel your pain, its so horrible. Especially when my cousin just glowed and looked stunning the whole way through while I looked like death warmed up lol. I hope it passes soon for you and you can enjoy it xoxoxoxo
  13. Congratulations, go trixie wooooo! Love the "omg have you got your camera...Gina..Stop...enjoy the moment" gorgeous :D
  14. I imagine it helps to consider it a business expense! Compared to the costs of hiring someone to help out, then adding the costs of quad bikes or horses to move the employees around it doesn't look so bad :) And you never have to worry about worker morale or bludging with a good kelpie! :p -- Welcome The doggy diaries :) Haha you are so right Weasels! Cheap employee at that price!
  15. My brother has a few of those plastic toy snakes lying around on his back veranda, he said that they keep the birds out.
  16. this weather sucks I hate winter (whinge, moan) Hope everyone is staying safe !
  17. Wow, I cant imagine paying $12000 for a dog!! I would love to see that dog working, it must be impressive. Great pic of the Kelpie looking at the statue, such big, curious eyes :)
  18. Im so sad for Bob's family. I was so shocked when I heard about what had happened, I cant believe its taken this long for the trial & then to get this kind of slap on the wrist for killing a completely innocent man makes me sick to my stomach. I have many great memories of Bob from when I was with the GSD club in Canberra. He was one of the most amazing people I have ever met, he just had a way about him. He helped me through a difficult time when my Dad died and I will be eternally grateful. I wish I had told him how much he helped me. I found this very old pic the other day of a parade we did back in 1995, and wanted to share. Bob is holding Radar and Im holding Kojak, my dog Beau was with my Mum taking the pic. A happy memory instead of those low lifes. RIP Bob Canberra Festival Parade 11.3.95 ACTGSDA.pdf
  19. I have lots of empty toilet rolls around my house (my puppy loves 'stealing' them) so I keep them for this reason. I also save coke bottles, I just remove the lids and the ring thingy around the top and he loves playing with these. My houe does look like I leave rubbish everywhere, I have the empty coke bottles, old loo rolls strategically placed around my house so if he grabs something he isnt meant to have I grab one of my 'toys' or a treat (also everywhere) and make a big game out of what I have. It seems to work, I havent had anything destroyed yet, touch wood.
  20. Ive priced the Dog Rocks. My goodness they are expensive, it would cost me over $35 to put them in my dogs water bucket, I use a 9 litre bucket for water! I have just spread my lawn with lime, hoping this will help to rebalance it a bit, and I have bought some Natures Miracle odour destroyer spray for the pavers, $20 for a 700ml spray bottle (I hope it works). I will see how this goes before I try the dog rocks, has anyone tried putting a bit of bicarb in the water, or is this not good for dogs?
  21. HI, We have 2 dogs, a nearly 3 yr old desexed male shepherd and a 5 mth old male Brittany. I have noticed that my lawn has started to reek of dog urine. Im really noticing it,I do try watering it immediately after they wee,but thats not always possible. Also now the weather is cooler the grass doeasnt dry very quickly so Ive ended up with soggy, smelly grass. I do seem to have dogs who like weeing in their own yard and not so much when we r out on walks, my dogs are weird, my shepherd had to have a urine test last week & I eventually brought him home where he immediately went to the toilet, he refused to go while we were out!! The brown spots are annoying but not as bad as the smell. They also have weed on the concrete pavers out the back and I cant get the smell out for the life of me. I have tryed baking soda and vinegar,Ive also used some aro-fectant (dog kennel disinfectant from rural west) but it hasnt worked at all. Ive seen dog rocks advertised, has anyone had success with these. I have thought of getting some lime from Bunnings to put on the lawn? Im no gardener either & I dont really have much clue about these things, so I thought I would ask my fellow DOLers what you do to save your yard!
  22. HI all, I have a 5 mth old male Brittany pup and a nearly 3 yr old male GSD. Im a bit curious as to how much energy my pup should have, he seems to be tired so much! He is healthy, gets good quality dry food, plus supplements, eggs occasionally, bones, chicken frames etc, he is wormed once a month now, last wormed on the 1st of May. He just doesnt seem active enough to me! I know this probably sounds crazy, I feel a bit nutty to actually be a bit concerned about it. I walk him up to the local park (5 min) walk & then he get a free run around & playtime like tugging, fetch, intermingled with a bit of obedience, max time there is about 20 minutes. I take him to the school to pick the kids up a couple of days a week for socializing, plus we go to show training once a week, obedience once a week. I do a 5 min stint of play/training once or twice a day at home with both of my dogs. I walk my older dog seperately about 3/4 hr a day, although not everyday, I alternate who gets to go to the school, & to footy training. I only take them out together once a wk because it wears the pup out way too much, & I like them to go out seperately for one on one with me. My puppy seems to be sleeping most of the day at the moment, & isnt as energetic as I thought he would be at this age. He is awake probably about 6 hrs a day? I am thinking maybe its a growth spurt? I remember my shepherd being like the energiser bunny at 5 mths, so I thought this little guy would be hyper? They do play together a bit (probably an hr added up throughout the day). is a normal activity level for a pup his age, its so hard to know. Am I being an overreacting, neurotic, worrying over nothing type puppy parent??
  23. OMG has anyone actually tryed to put bread on their dogs head? Try it, freakin hilarious!!!!
  24. Well you did that and it was a fairly harsh judgement. Maybe it would have been better just to say no and leave it at that. Agreed.Deliberately infammatory post regarding FIFO workers values was unnecessary, a simple No would have sufficed. Just a bit judgemental!
