I agree with you on many points Airedaler. GP vets do seem to treat symptoms instead of getting to the cause. I found that with my own dog.

But I disagree with pain being used as a restraint. :(

I was not advocating that the dog should be in pain and if there is significant pain that needs treatment but if mild pain stops over use of the area then that is probably going to contribute to rest and healing.

  2. More often than not Vets treat the symptoms, not the cause. Like Showdog I would try and see a chiropractor/muscle man. I understand you may have limited options but are their greyhound people around? Usually where you find greyhounds you can find someone who works on them.

I took my girl to a chiropractor recently for a torn medial ligament. He was so gentle with her, no bone crunching at all and he gave me a mix to put on the sore area which was basically voltaren emugel mixed with a carrier substance (DMSO?)

He was not keen on getting anti inflamatories or pain killers as the mask the pain and do not stop the dog being active.

Metacam is only controlling the pain not addressing the problem.

  3. I second OKS. I bought mine from there a coupe of years ago and found the whole transaction easy and the product is great. It was sent from Tasmania to Melbourne at a reasonable price and very well packed. The only thing I don't like about it is there is no brake on the wheels. I'm sure I could have asked for that but didn't think of it at the time. The issue is easily overcome as I bought some wheel wells (don't know the correct term) from a caravan and camping store and the wheels just it in those.

  4. Mine have hammock beds with the Hound House canvas cover on them. We went from replacing the hessian bags every few weeks to having the same HH cover for over 18 months. Well worth the cost which I think from memory was $30 for the large one. Another thing that lasted for ages was old trampoline mat cut to size and attached (we used bolts) to the frame.

  5. How long it takes to get papers can depend on when they are submitted. I would have thought a breeder would submit them when the pups are about 8 weeks old but many don't for various reasons. I've known breeders not to submit them for months which I think is just plain slack. Then of course the canine association will take as long as they take.

I don't believe there is any rule which precludes a breeder charging whatever they want to for mains register upgrades, however, I do think to charge $600 is unethical. This is one of the reasons breeders get a bad name. As you say the fee is $32 and I'd like to know what the justification for charging

more is. If you have no intention of showing or breeding then there is no benefit in upgrading to mains.

  6. I have just taken my girl to Peter Scholfield to be worked on. I highly recommend him for anyone looking for a muscle and manipulation man for your dogs.  He was wonderful, a real chip off the old block for those who have ever used George. So gentle with the dog and put things back in place without me even realising he had done so. He is located in Devon Meadows. Sorry to those NSWers who used him but he is a Victorian now.

I'm sorry that you have found yourself in this position, it would be extremely upsetting and stressful.

Since you are a long-term doler I'm going to say it straight - I wouldn't rehome him.

Even if he goes into a home where there are no babies planned, you can't guarantee that crawling babies will never visit that home, or that his new owners will be as dog savvy about it. There is also a huge risk that he may be rehomed again, and that that information is never passed on.

I know that it is very upsetting, but he has had 8 fantastic years with you, if you move him on - he becomes a liability to someone else. It wouldn't sit well with my conscience if it were me, that he might hurt someone else's precious baby because the adults weren't aware. :(

I agree with all of the above. Also to be considered IMO is that even if you did/could manage the current situation, until your crawler grows up some, there is always the possibility that the relationship between them will have been established and the dog will never accept your child.

Any Vet who is advocating annual vaccinations is in my opinion money grabbing and borders on irresponsible.

Many many years ago when annual vaccination was acceptable one of my Vets told me not to bother vaccinating my dogs after they were about 7 or 8. He said as they had been vaccinated every year their immunity would be good.

Like several others I now vaccinate at 15 or 16 months and that is it. My dogs have all lived to be about 13 without any issues and that is a good age for my breed.

I would love to titre test but find it extremely hard to find someone to do it at a realistic price within a reasonable distance from me. The response from a couple of Vets when I have asked about titre testing has been "why bother, it's cheaper to just vaccinate" and another "what is that?" :banghead:

  9. Update: over the course of the day, and with a bit of input from here she's going with a non local guy who has glowing recommendations and ticks all the boxes. My fur neice will be coming home in the new year.

    Thats so exciting!

Just remember the score of 9 in the greater scheme of things is not a bad score. That 9 is out of 106.

Sometimes I think we get too bogged down in scores etc. Having said that it does need to be considered.

Thanks for that, i did always wonder what the scores were out of. I always assumed 10  !

Each hip has a total possible score of 53. There are 9 areas that are scored

  10. I'm staggered that this is not more of a hot topic here.

Maybe because there isn't anything to debate? Everyone realises it is just dumb. There is a lot of activity on my FB page.

Maybe it is just dumb but so are the politicians voting on it so sitting back doing nothing is only going to see this bill introduced. Then who is dumb?

  11. I know Airedaler. Trust me I've tried. But everyone thinks it's just about puppy farms. And it's not. The government and all the animal rights orgs see Dogs Vic members as being part of the problem.

    Thanks TSD.

This is so frustrating. Ten years or so ago we lost the fight re tail docking in part because even dog people would not unite to fight. In fact many fought against us. Some of those same people who claimed it was mutilation are now de sexing puppies at 8 weeks or earlier. Tell me that is not mutilation. BUT sorry I digress. My point is that unless we all stand united and fight this Bill together it will be nigh on impossible to buy a pure bred registered dog in Victoria after April next year.

You think I am exagerating? Think about it. Breeders will be at the mercy of their Local Council to issue a Domestic Animal Permit even if they only have 1 bitch and want 1 litter.

Each year a breeder will have to apply for this permit and pay the fee which could be as high as $3000.

If the breeder happens to have 6 animals on the property they will need to comply with the Code for Breeding and Rearing Animals and that specifies the conditions in which the animals are to be kept. Concrete runs and sleeping accommodation, a concrete whelping room to mention two conditions. No keeping your dogs inside and I might add this is the same for pet owners who house 6 or more. NOT JUST BREEDERS.

    BUT

The thing that really gets to me is the recommendation that when a breeder has finished breeding with a bitch that bitch should be either re-homed or EUTHANIZED!!!!!!!!!!

All dog owners need to get their head out of the sand and look at the repercussions of this ill thought out Bill.

It will also affect Foster Carers and basically every aspect of pet ownership whether that be dog, cat, bird etc.

None of us are disagreeing that puppy farms should be shut down or controlled but don't throw the baby our with the bath water.

Think of the impact on Guide Dogs, Service Dogs, Border control Dogs, Police Dogs Search and Rescue Dogs, Assistance Dogs etc. Most of which are purebred and many from Dogs Victoria breeders.

I know I want my grandchildren to be able to own a well bred pure bred dog if they so wish.

Please don't sit back and let this happen.

  12. I'm staggered that this is not more of a hot topic here. I wonder if people realise how this amendment will affect the registered pure breeds and also the impact it will have on almost all aspects of dog ownership. Therapy and service dogs, associated dog related business, foster carers, pet supply places, trainers, pet transport companies etc to name a few will all be affected from the flow on effect. It will also affect cats and birds and no doubt in time all other pets.

Government revenue, albeit Federal Government will be affected as current breeders who are forced to stop breeding as Domestic Animal Permits will not be issued to them will stop importing animals and quarantine income will reduce.

One only has to look at the organisations behind this amendment to see where this is going. Animals Australia, Oscar's Law, rspca all animal rights groups who in the main wish to see animals liberated from "human ownership"

  13. I have ended up with a registered pedigree dog that was actually bred by a backyard breeder (encouraged by the owner of the prefix).

Its a pretty messed up situation...

I am just trying to gather more information about the line.

You could try a breed club for the breed if there is one. They may have records in some form, maybe Year Books or similar.
