  1. I had several names I really liked and named puppies that I bred and was going to keep but for various reasons I didn't keep.

I also had a thing about using a name that I had already used, however I relented on that for my last two and the last one I bred was Tori which happened to be an anagram of her name Quite A Riot. I now have Spice, a name which I had coveted for years, and love it. It suits her to the ground and when I told her breeder I was going to call her Spice he registered her as Spice Is Nice.

  2. I bought a Dremel Stylus from Masters a couple of years ago. It works really well and has a variable speed control. From memory it cost me about $90, however, prior to that I had one from Bunnings that was called a Medallion Engraving Tool at the grand price of $15. that too worked well but was not as easy to hold as the cordless pistol type Dremel.

There are dog specific ones - or at least ones sold for dogs but for bigger dogs they don't seem to be strong enough.

IMO it is worth buying the dearer product BUT that does not mean that your dog will tolerate it any better than anything else.

When I started using the Dremel with my current dog I could not get it anywhere near the nails. A little at a time got us there before too long.

  3. I mentioned this in the greyhound thread in news but I think it is useful here. Currently the narrative that much of the public sees is from AR groups, the RSPCA and others who basically have the greatest public presence and the loudest voices. In contrast the purebred dog world appears cloistered and disconnected from the public and the "real world" in a sense. It's time to change the narrative. Become the voice that people hear when it comes to dogs and companion animals in general. AR dominates because they are there, in public, as much as possible. But they are not the only ones who can do this, we can do it too, and become a voice for our breed, our sport, and our pets.

Except breeders have been well trained to keep their campfires low and stay off the track - say too much get too obvious about who you are and what you do and you are likely to be wallopped. Those who have more than one or two dogs who have a genuine interest in seeing it stay as it is are the least likely to make waves and shout about it . We are divided -where are the dog related groups who have stood up for the greyhound people where are the dog related groups who join with us to fight crap legislation - where are we if they need us.

How many dog related people and groups are going to go in and shout and donate money to help the people who compete in lure work?

They are in the same place as they were when the docking ban was being fought or the BSL fight or so many other issues. The "dog world" is so fragmented and wrapped up in individual opinions that they will never support each other and soon it will be too late.

  4. Won't be any greyhounds allowed in NSW if this is the case

So all those people who have greyhounds as pets will have to get rid of them or move out of NSW. As I said in an earlier post the ramifications of this decision are huge for all dog owners not just the greyhound industry.

  5. This industry cannot be trusted, they cannot or will not abide by the live baiting ban for one. The culture is too big.

Couldn't agree more juice. Sadly I think there will be more dog deaths before it stops - but that too is sadly inevitable. IF these people were genuinely good they would be re-homing instead of euthanising.

ABC 24 is reporting trainers who are already saying they are going to put their dogs down - as far as I'm concerned it just proves the government's point and that despite the pain the industry is going to go through there really is no other option.

I'd put my dogs down too before handing them over to places like the RSPCA.

    Absolutely

Well being so ready to put your dogs down is the easy way out, no responsibility taken to find a solution. If the dogs' lives are so cheap then that just confirms the rightness of the decision. Disgusting attitude :o

I didn't say would not take the responsibility to find a solution but only that if the rspca was the solution then I would take that option.

The decision IMO is flawed and I believe the start of a concerted push by some to stop all pet ownership.

  7. No reason to desex him if you don't want to. Your dog, your rules within reason. You just need to be aware of the responsibilities that go with that decision. IMO it has become an expected thing that dogs will be desexed, usually with the reason that unwanted litters will be prevented.

  8. In over forty years of breeding I have never asked for a deposit, because for the reasons you mentioned anything can happen to change a person's situation, as I see it there would always be someone that I approve of who will step in when puppies are available.

This taking deposits is something that has come about in the past ten years.

    I disagree with this. (bold)

I bred for over thirty years from the mid 1970's and pretty much all breeders I knew took deposits over that time.

In my case I only took a deposit after the litter was born and I knew what was available. This was usually between $100 and $250 and the cost of the pups during that time ranged from $100 in 1975 to $1200 in 2005.

If for any reason someone paid the deposit and could not go through with the purchase of the pup the deposit was returned. Personally the reason was unimportant, simply that the purchaser no longer wanted the pup was enough reason for me to not sell to them.

The only thing I did in relation to the deposit was refund only part of it IF I had passed up a sale and because of the cancellation had to spend money on advertising or keep.

  9. There is now a new scheme which is run entirely by the ANKC. Actually the scheme is probably the same but rather than being jointly run by the Australian Veterinary Association and the Australian National Kennel Council it is now administered by the ANKC alone. Information on the scheme can be found here . http://ankc.org.au/HealthAndWelfare/?id=2516

The Vet who does the xrays cannot officially score the x-rays although a lot will make a comment on them. To be officially scored, in order to be included on the ANKC database they must be score by one of 3 or 4 Vets who are listed on the site above. I order for accurate breed average scores to be determined it is important IMO that all dogs x-rayed are officially scored.

  10. The most wonderful resource in Victoria for this sort of research would be the Dogs Victoria Library. They have records of registrations etc going back years and years.

There is also the ANKC data base, available to members online but I'm not sure the information there will cover the years you are interested in.

  11. MIR.....All I can tell you is this. My puppies are vaccinated at 8 weeks and micro chipped. Within a few days of this the pups are flown to their new owners or travel in cars to their new owners home. They go for walks and nothing untoward has ever happened to one of them. Most vaccines work fully within 36 hours. Saying that a pup needs 3 vaccines to me is over kill. To me it would be like going to the doctor for a vaccination and the doctor telling you that you have to wait 2 weeks before it become effective. We all know the minute you get it is starting to work. The only time it doesn't is if you are already harbouring the virus. The same would go for the dog. Usually a second vaccination is advised, just to make sure, in case the first one didn't work. As I said, this works for me and it is only an opinion. If you are in doubt I would look on the AVA protocol of vaccinations and see what they have to say.

Totally agree with this and would add that in all probability there will already be effective immunity from the mother.

I happily take my puppies out and about - within reason- I don't see this any different than flying the pup somewhere or even going from the breeder to the new owners home.

  12. You also need not be aware that just because a breeder is registered with a controlling body (Dogs Vic,etc) or listed on Dogz Online does not mean that they are not puppy farmers.

The vast majority are not BUT sadly there are some rouges among the majority of genuine breeders.

I suggest you contact the breed club for any pure breed you are interested in. Any cross breed you may consider is almost definitely from a puppy farmer.

  13. The Airedale Terrier Club of Victoria Inc. has a new Facebook Group. The purpose of this one is for Airedale lovers to join and post photos and stories about their Airedales also to feel free to ask questions about the breed and advice on various matters. There will be many very Airedale experienced people in the Group to help you out with anything Airedale.

You do not have to be a member of the Club to join but the Group will promote the Club.

    No advertising is allowed

Come in and join us. www.facebook.com/groups/airedaleterrierclub.social/

  14. Just wondering if anyone has used Raspberry Leaf tablets to prevent or lessen the symptoms of a phantom pregnancy.

Last season (her first) my girl suffered the longest and worst phantom I've ever had with a bitch in over 40 years. It went on and on and on. She has just come into season again and it would be good if I could avoid or lessen a repeat performance.
