Well done to all concerned. It is a great thrill obtaining a title with any of your dogs but the first one is just a little bit more special.

Has anyone used the 3 metre walls on the 2.4 metre gazebo? If so are you able, or do you need to attach the wall to the legs of the gazebo given that the Velcro tabs would not match up with the frame. I wonder if it is worth having the mesh wall cover a side and a bit.

If you allow one deviation from the standard i.e. colour, how long would it be before someone else wants another feature of the standard ignored i.e. ear set or carriage, either of which have no impact on the conformation or health of the dog or for example coat texture again in this day and age probably given the fact that most of any breed are pets this would have no impact. When you go along this line until everyone has allowed what they want you no longer have the breed as it is described in the standard. The standard thus IMO becomes lowered. We should not be even contemplating lowering standards but sadly too often in this day and age the attitude is if I don't like it, it should be changed.

Yes you are allowed to take a dog that is not entered to a show.

I'm another one that will not support the rspca so will not be participating in the million paws walk.

I wonder if there is anyone in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne who would be interested in getting together to have some ring craft practice.

I'm finding it difficult to find an environment that will give Spice experience in people handling her in a training situation and while she handles the ring well it is always good to have others watch things like movement speed etc.

We had a great win a few weeks now.. first weekend up in minor and she wins minor in show!!! mind u shes so norti and barks as shes going around the ring lol.. oh well.. but im really happy with her

Well done TeamSnag,. Being naughty in the ring at least shows she has attitude and is enjoying herself which is what it has to be about for these youngsters. I've found the judges are all happy to let Spice be a puppy instead of a cardboard cutout to this stage but there will come a time when better behaviour is expected so we need to find the balance of getting them to do it right without squashing their natural showmanship.

On Monday it was Spice's last show in Baby Puppy and she did us proud by winning BP in Group.

Showing seems to be totally natural for her. The first dog that I've had that stands there and says look at me. I so hope it continues.

Be careful, Phoebe showed like a champ in baby puppy, got into minor and lost her head!

Wise words Rebanne. This weekend past Spice has acted like a complete novice in the ring for the first time. Every other show she has been to it is like she has been doing it forever, this weekend she behaved as I had expected her to do at the first shows.

However, despite that Spice did win BOB over older exhibits at the 3 shows we went to. Made the rain and cold weather worth coping with.

Photo below is of Spice in the General Specials ring after winning Minor Puppy in Group a few weeks ago. Unfortunately she did not go any further.

Oh and my bubble has burst as expected. Chewed up door mat, crate mats, decking, door frame, wall of kennel - albeit it was very old and had come loose- and so on.

Robert Hutchinson a leading repo vet in the US (at least he used to be if not so now) used to say this was the best way for the health of the bitch. He also went on to say the bitch should be mated on each season within reason as each season the bitch had without being mated had potential to cause uterine problems.

I'm guessing the criteria would be slightly different for not-conformation competition judging like agility, obedience, tracking etc.

Wow - been an ANKC member for at least 8 years of the previous 10. And bred some litters. And won some championships with their own dogs.

Being a ring steward or helper at shows is a good idea.

Why do you want to become a judge? what sort of judging do you want to do? are you a member of SACA? Or a breed club or kennel club? Chances are a local breed based kennel club that hosts competitions could introduce you to a local judge and then they could go through what you'd need to do and maybe even guide you a bit.

Yes Mrs RB I did only include the conformation criteria but the same site has the info for performance judging too.

The following information is taken from the ANKC website.

4.1.1 Toenrol in the Program as an Aspiring Judge, a member must fulfil the followingcriteria:

4.1.1.1be 18 years of age or over;

4.1.1.2have been a member of an ANKC MemberBody for a minimum of eight (8) years during the ten (10) years immediatelyprior to the date of the application.

4.1.1.3 havebred at least three (3) litters under their own or shared Prefix.

4.1.1.4have bred at least two (2) championsunder their own or shared Prefix.

4.1.1.5the application shall be for theGroup or Breed in which the requirements of 4.1.1.3 and 4.1.1.4 above have beenmet or partially met. (Amended 10/12 - 7.4.1)

4.1.1.6(a) Where a Member Body requiresformal training to become a Steward, a Member must successfully complete thattraining in the two (2) years prior to applying to become an Aspiring Judge.

(b) In any State where no formal training is required, inthe two years prior to enrolling, an Aspiring Judge must officiate as a ringsteward on no less than six (6) occasions of which three (3) must be fullgroups.

4.1.1.7in the two years prior to enrolling,have successfully completed and have demonstrated a history of ongoingcommitment to dog showing through the various aspect of the sport such as ShowManagement and other aspects of Affiliate and Show Administration. Thiscommitment is to continue for the duration of training.

4.1.1.8complete and submit the approvedenrolment form which must include evidence of the criteria of 4.1.1.1 – 4.1.1.7above and be accompanied by the prescribed fee.

I never carry my dogs even as young pups. We are careful where we go but tbh I think the risk of infection is pretty low.

I believe it is the new name for a labradoodle, I stand to be corrected but think it has something to do with potential recognition with the ANKC

Perhaps a phone call to whoever prescribed this would be better than asking on a forum. People here can give you information re what they are giving their dogs but not second guess what you have been prescribed or why.

Last Sunday it was the Airedales and Frenchies that were away from public view/attention... and the couple of Airedale people that were near to the public accessway weren't all that interested in letting the public see or touch the dogs at all... and I did ask nicely AFTER their competition session was over... *sigh*

I know it is disappointing when this happens. However, until you have attended a Royal Show as a dog exhibitor you cannot understand how little consideration the exhibitors get from a/ the show organisers and b/ from many if not most of the general public. The exhibitors and the dogs get tired and cranky and have demands put on them by many and there is the constant threat of interference with the dogs. I remember one Royal I went to the toy of the show was a thing on a stick that when flicked it unfurled a length of plastic about 2 feet long. We spent all day protecting our dogs from kids flicking these things at the dogs.

The space between the benches and the rails got less and less and the public were able to get to less than a metre from the dogs. There was no space for exhibitors to sit and we were constantly told by organisers to get off the benches, having something to eat or drink with fellow exhibitors is almost an impossibility due to space and

While the Royal is a great opportunity to showcase breeds as it should be the exhibitors too are entitled to some down time and consideration. We pay enough to be there. However, there are always some exhibitors who are a little precious.

I am sorry though T that you did not get any Airedale snuggles or cuddles because they really do give wonderful ones.

I am not quite convinced that advertising animals on Gumtree is any different to advertising animals on Dogzonline I am sure Gumtree is not just limited to back yard & shonky breeders. I can't see why an ethical breeder shouldn't be allowed to advertise their puppies wherever they like. Quite a bit different to Pet shops.

I agree with Sheena, if good breeders don't advertise where the public look then the shonky ones will have the market to themselves.

The grounds were fine but parking was a nightmare. Not helped by the fact that cars with trailers on were taking up to 5 car spaces.

While hip scores are important and the 2:7 is not ideal because of the difference between hips I think you need to be careful that you do not get bogged down with hip scores. I've known of dogs with awful hips that have a sire and dam with scored of 0:0. There are just so many factors with HD.There are many other factors that are equally or more important in my opinion. It would be of concern that you were given two different scores for the same dog but this could also be a case of a genuine mistake. The response you receive may give you a better idea of what you are dealing with. Ask to see the official score sheet to clarify.

At the end of the day if you are not 110% happy with what you have been told walk away and find another breeder/pup.

If you want this as an official event you would need to apply to your State Canine Association for approval to run a show etc. I think you will find that the allocation of dated for events is done at least a year if not more in advance of the event. There would be a lot of work to do and the Ag Society whose umbrella is would be held under would probably want to see the logistics presented before committing to the event.

Well that would be about my luck. I'm still waiting for the puppy bubble to break as Spice has been the easiest puppy I've ever had. No weeing inside and only a few nights messing overnight in the early days (and once after worming) she has not chewed anything of significance in spite of the patio blinds flapping right up against her day bed and so on. I guess she will get to between 9 and 12 months and wammo!

Unfortunately it is not particularly clear as it was taken on a phone across the ring.

I also vote for a slow feed bowl. I came very close to losing my 12.5 year old a month or so back because of the way he eats. It was enough to make me realise that I needed to do something about it and I now find it takes him 10 minutes instead of 10 seconds to eat his dinner. So they really do work, at least in my case.

I don't think he likes the bowl though because whenever we don't pick it up straight away he picks it up and takes it to a remote part of the yard. :laugh:
