  1. Thanks everyone for your advice and training methods. The puppy is indeed a Sibe and that was bewildering about the behaviour at first. I thought it was aggresive until I realised that she WAS just greeting me/partner/guests etc. I guess it is more annoying than anything and the negative/positive reinforcement will work over time. The main reason I wanted it to stop ASAP is because my grandson is only 18 mths old and just at a level with her face. He visits regularly and I don't want to see him get hurt by an exhuberant playful puppy. In answer to the query as to where she spends her time, She is kenneled with my 2 older dogs outside at night .......... Spends one on one time training and playing with me twice a day for about 1/2 hour each time and has rest time during the day inside with the other dogs if she wants to. A day or 2 before a show, whoever is attending the show that weekend will spend the night inside after a bath (usually on my bed)
  2. I have also tried yelping like I am hurt as well and she does stop & look at me to see if I am ok, but the behaviour has continued. Really need to stop this ASAP as I have my grandson come over for visits and I am worried that she may accidently hurt him
  3. Hi all, Need help with a problem I am having with my 18 week old puppy. When we got her at 8 weeks she was very mouthy, would grab your hand/finger, not hard but somtimes she would clamp down and puppy teeth are sharp as you know. This is in no way an aggresive thing that I can see. She would jump up and instead of licking would have her mouth wide open & if it made contact with a shirt/hand or anything she would close her mouth over the object and puppy teeth being what they are, you can imagine this was somtimes painful. I have trained her (nearly) out of jumping up & she doesn't have her mouth wide open if she does spring up anymore. Have spoken to her breeder and she said the dams side is mouthy. but no suggestion on how to stop this behaviour. When walking past her sometimes, especially if it is the first contact for the morning or I have been out, she will grab my hand in her mouth, not hard, and then let go. I have growled at her, Growled NO at her and turned my back on her to indicate this is not acceptable behaviour but it is continuing, albiet not as frequent. Last weekend at a show she even growled at the judge as she went to check her teeth, but that may have been because I had just given her some bait and is perhaps a resource issue instead. What can I do to put a stop to this behaviour? She runs in our yard with 2 other dogs, F 3 yrs & M 4.5 yrs
  4. I too have a 10 week old bitch that I am attempting to toilet train and thought I would bump this thread as I to would like to know if I am doing the right thing or just expecting to much to soon as I havn't had a puppy for over 15 yrs. She can hold overnight without any problems (I take her out at about 11pm) and as soon as the first person in the house wakes (about 5am) in the morning, they know that she has to be taken outside to relieve herself before anything else is done. She is taken outside after waking from naps during the day and after eating & generally is ok. We don't have an area in the house where she can toilet as I prefer that she go outside and I don't want her to get confused. She spends half her time outside the house with our other dog & the rest inside. Generally I find that she is ok with "most" of her toilet habits, but at least once a day she will come inside after playing outside for hours and wee as soon as my back is turned. Any advice would be helpful
  5. I am so glad I am not the only one with this "problem". I have tried to get Misty, my sibe,to play with balls, squeaky toys and just forget trying to play tug-o-war :D I thought it was because she was abused by her previous owners & just didn't know how to play/to scared/submissive Happy to say though, that when I bought a couple of coloured tennis balls out for my grandson to play with she very quickly pounced on one last Friday. I was soooooooo excited for her. It has taken 18 months for Misty to realise it's ok to play, but the wait has been worth it
  6. Thanks to everyone that replied, I took Silverhaze's advice & just gave her multpile warm washes the week before her show and it seemed to settle her coat down , (just a few loose hairs still coming out) I don't know about the soak in vinegar though poodlefan :D should I use white or brown LOL Washed, fluffed & puffed we set off for our first show decidedly nervous and wondering what the heck I was doing :D Thank goodness Misty knew because I forgot to stack her but she still managed to win her class. ;) Not to shabby for a timid little rescue Sibe.
  7. She sounds like an princess too. can't offer anything but my hope that her weight problems are fixed before they affect her & you
  8. Thanks for the suggestions Silverhaze, I think I will go with option A and try the very warm bath/mask/blowdry option. On the upside.............it will look like it has snowed in my backyard I had a Sammy many years ago that I didn't show but even his coat didn't drop like Misty's does. Is it true that Bitches tend to drop more excessively than dogs? I am currently brushing Mist out everyday for at least 1/2 hr somtimes more (she hates it) How do you get dogs to like Grooming? I look at other dogs at the shows & they just love it !!! Let me explain a little, Misty came into my care xmas day 2003 when she was a year old. She was severly beaten, malnourished, had been tied continuously on one metre lead and would cower and run away if any man came near her. I don't think she had ever seen water, let alone been bathed or groomed. Didn't even have basic obedience (sit, wait etc) and is one of the most independant breeds there is. (So I was to learn). A year on she has put on weight (but is so active and fussy with her food that it is hard to keep it there) Goes for walks (and is nearly obediant LOL) Regularly runs with our local AFL team at training (Got over the fear of men through constant exposure and lots of hugs) ...............but grooming & bathing are an alien concept. Oh well, I guess I just have to get ready to get soaked once again
  9. Thanx Madkap, at least I know I'm not the only one going through this
  10. Hi Peoples, I'm new to all this and would be grateful for any help/advice you have. My rescue Sibe is having her first show at confirmation in 2 weeks (OMG I am sooooooo nervous)and she started to drop her coat at the end of January, OK,no problem I think. She has continually dropped her coat since then & no amount of brushing seems to affect it. For the first 2 weeks it was just loose single hairs, lots of them, coming out and when she went for a drive in the car with me, it was like one of those little ornaments you get in a gift store, that you give to Aunt Ethel because you know she will expect a gift from your travels & the little snow scene is cute and easy to pack in your travel bag, but I digress. This last week & 1/2 her coat has started to come out in clumps & I am to scared to wash her again in case I end up with a bald Siberian Husky. I'm sure that would be a disqualification in the show ring. What do I do????? How can I stop this mass explosion of fur from happening or at least stem the tide so I can breath when I drive the car. Misty has dropped her coat before and even with all the coat that she has dropped, she still has lots more still there. It doesn't even look like she has lost anything. Should I wash her again to loosen more??Should I just keep brushing till my arm drops off????? Will this be finished in time for the Hillsborough show????? \ OMG I have a Siberian Husky with tassels !!!!! Please help, any advice you have regarding my exploding bitch would be appreciated.
