  1. Just an update, I have made some connections with some greyhound rescues who like me dont think rescuing should be a competition. I will be in contact with them and hope to be able to network with a few rescues to be able to save more greyhounds. For me and a few other rescues its not about who gets the dog as long as a responsible rescue saves them and does right by them we are happy. So thought I should just update you guys that we will go forward with rescuing and rehoming greyhounds as we can. We will also be networking with a few more greyhound rescues that do a great job to help where we can. Networking is important but its important you network with the groups that ethics are inline with your own. I am sure this will be great for us as we can not only rescue but help these other rescues with transports and other things and they can help us grow into a great rescue so thats it, I am sure some will be very mad we are going forward but it doesnt matter to us what people say or think it matters that we can save dogs that need saving. Ill keep in touch
  2. Yeah why give up because of a few nay sayers Ill get this all worked out. Thanks to those that have supported me and given me good advice.
  3. Something to consider, I was planning on picking the dogs up from the trainers houses.
  4. Articles like this make rescues seem a bad choice http://www.slate.com/articles/life/heavy_petting/2012/01/animal_rescue_want_to_adopt_a_dog_or_cat_prepare_for_an_inquisition_.html
  5. Ok I read all this but can you tell me what the difference is in say a private rescue. Someone that has no problems doing what you say the orgs do but on a smaller scale? I have no problems opening my home to adopters, etc I have no problem networking with professionals etc but I do not have the desire to be a huge organization running massive fundraisers or anything like that. If someone wants to donate old beds, or some food, toys or something that would be helpful but as far as going out and trying to get grants or large sums of money there are no plans or desire for that. I know its not rocket science  I find it very rewarding and love love rescuing it really is in my heart I believe its what I do best helping animals. I have helped so many animals not just dogs I use to save wild mustangs in Nevada training them and rehoming them now that was heartbreaking those poor horses. No we will take from more than this one trainer but she is a start and we can branch out from there. Shelter dogs and owner surrenders if we have room if that makes sense. We are working on finding a bit or property to purchase which would allow us to a bit extra but we have no desire at this point to take in a large number of dogs to keep it fair on ourselves and the dogs kwim? Thanks though I might just have to step away for a bit because I really shouldnt be doubting myself. I am a good person a damn good rescuer so why shoudlnt I help these dogs. I guess its just a play on words on how we will do it. Maybe I should just not care what people think as long as I am doing the right thing and properly placing healthy sound dogs what does it matter but it does bother me when people think I am not on the up and up because I am.
  6. I agree with you seems some people here were born knowing everything there is to know about dog breeds and behavior if only we were all so lucky then we could make fun of people too.
  7. That's a good question because the difference is quite large. Steve has given you a broad overview of what sorts of things need to be considered in order for an organisation to avoid trouble. I am busy today but will try to get back here tonight with a list of examples of what an individual would do to rehome a dog and how that differs from what an organisation is required to do. I will also be able to explain the different expectations the community has of the two. I am running to work but will check in tonight.
  8. Thats actually a decent food and usually very well priced. I know a lot of the show people would feed it and their dogs looked great
  9. Thanks this is a lot but very good advice. :)
  10. Yes and I never said save them all as a matter of fact I know that you cant save them all and some will not be saved for many reasons. If your implying that I think quantity over quality when placing dogs your wrong thats not how I think.
  11. But I haven't been repeating myself. Every time I have posted I have included further information. I would rather speak up about potential problems than wait and complain when things go wrong. There is a lot that the op needs to be aware of to avoid the type of problems that burn adopters and carers. It would be impossible for me to try to describe them all here, it takes time and help from those who know greyhounds well. To set up an organisation is to attract public attention. The op seems to underestimate her ability to make an impact in the community and over estimate the size of other organisations in the rescue scene. So to move on with this topic I would ask grylver why she needs to start an organisation instead of rehoming privately? If she wants to work on a small scale with one breeder then private rehoming is appropriate for now. If somebody starts an organisation then then the community expectations are going to be a lot higher. How is what you are describing different than this
  12. Some dogs don't just "try". Some dogs cut right to the chase and "do". You really don't want a rock solid dog to get wounded trying to help another dog. And it happens unless people know exactly what they are doing. Yes I wasnt suggesting she do it or anyone does it was just pointing out that I wouldnt do it but that I had a dog that was a rock solid dog that helped me with some dogs that were trouble dogs. Thats all If you know about dog body language it helps to prevent a lot of problems.
  13. I wouldnt but that said I had a dog when I was doing rescue that was rock solid. So I would introduce him to the new dogs that came in. They could try to pick a fight he would just stand there looking at them, he let puppies chew on him but I think those dogs are rare and no need to expose your dog to one if your not comfortable.
  14. All of this sounds great. One or two dogs at a time, you're responsible for them totally, all good. But weren't you also looking into charity status and having other foster carers helping you? That's when it all gets tricky. I understand wanting to do your own thing - I've been frustrated as a foster carer myself when I knew the dog better than the organisation - but you're either a private rescue, or you're part of the Greyhound rescue landscape as a whole and need to work out where you fit with it. Good luck, sadly there's nothing easy in rescue except finding the dogs. I did ask about the different statuses just to see if anyone had some really good advice on why we should go as a charity but really we wouldnt have bene doing large scale rescue we planned to do 1 or 2 dogs at a time have them vetted, screen homes and place them. Some times fosters come along and want to help and if they are capable and understand the laws etc with greyhounds why not give them a shot but like you said it can get tricky at that point.
  15. Great pics, Midori hates water but will get her feet wet at the beach I ll have to grab some shots of her next time we go
  16. Oh, come off it. Greylvr has actually shown a lot of restraint in this thread. There are a lot of people who would not have bitten their tongue so much and that doesn't mean those people aren't fit to run a rescue. Greylvr has said she doesn't want to continue. You don't have to like it but the constant baiting is just ridiculous. Thanks
  17. It wasnt about not dealing with the questions it was about people asking the same questions over and over and the drove of people (with other rescues minus the breeder) that came charging in worried about what seems to be money. I dont plan on running huge fund raisers, I dont plan on trying to gobble up a ton of foster homes, Like I said earlier these larger organizations wont even notice us. I didnt say we were starting this massive organization I said I wanted to start a rescue with my husband. So lets see what I had wanted to do: Start a small rescue with my husband the dogs being here unless we stumble upon someone who wants to foster The money that goes into the rescue will be our own The stuff the dogs need we will buy unless someone wants to send us toys or presents for the dogs. We will be within all the laws and a copy of the laws will be sent home with anyone who takes a dog The dogs will be sent out with a info packet on lots of things to do with greyhounds The dogs will be de sexed, vaccinate, microchipped, vet checked, tested with cats, dogs and kids, with a flea treatment. There is a bit of what we had planned to do. Have a good day you can continue to discuss this but I think I will steer clear of the thread hopefully now you can sleep at night
  18. And the sighthound thread in the breed forum. Ill go check that out.
  19. I am not combative its frustration, and you seem very strong about your feelings which is why I dont see us getting anywhere. Like I said just pretend I never posted this if you can because I am over it. The way things were handled and the attacks were not needed the trying to ram fostering down my throat not needed. I wish I had just not posted it and just did my thing I wouldnt have got caught up in this whirlwind of whatever this is. Almost remind me of a dog park someone comes in and tries to pee on a tree that another dog thinks is his there is a stand off, one dog nips the dog doesnt give so they go after them, the other dogs either walk away or join in on the nipping from all sides. So like that dog I have learned not to let people see me peeing on that tree and just stick to myself. I dont think Ill be hanging in the rescue forums too much, and I cant get into the breeder forums so not sure where that leaves me general dog chat I suppose.
  20. No matter how many times I answer your questions you dont listen and ask the same questions so like i said just forget it we can go round and round and still get no where.
  21. Sigh..... You act as if I am some person who wants to start a rescue, I have run one before I had great success with it. But like I said we can just drop it now You guys are just going in circles with me we are not getting anywhere on this subject.
  22. Sounds nice and easy. I always find it interesting how different dogs can do well on different things. When I was showing dogs I fed Eukanuba premium performance they all did very well on it except my working BC (we ran a cattle farm and worked all day on horse back awesome job) he did horrible on it coat looked dull etc. He did best on the crappiest food in the world of course the breeder we bought him from fed bread and milk in the AM and a crappy dry food in PM to all her dogs and they looked awesome. If I ever tried that with the other dogs they would look so bad.
  23. I am always curious as to what people feed their dogs and why. Midori is currently eating Black Hawk but we are switching to RAW once we find a good place to buy from.
  24. That could have been messy, thank god you pulled the plug
