  1. They look so nice!

I haven't ordered mine yet, was hit by unexpected fees and I was going to do a bulk buy, 2 of everything etc, so it comes out to a hefty sum. Will probably go with boomerang tag website as mysilverwombat only does the sliders in aluminium and Thistle is rather rough on her collars u_u

Also waiting on a second collar, different size, to arrive. Got to be stylish!

    Have you seen these?

These have been amazing so far, from someone who has two super rough dogs who swim and mud bathe and chew on each others collars....absolute godsend!

I second this. Still nice and vibrant 12 months on, they're excellent quality.

  2. We have two long lines. A 10 metre light stake out chain for camping and a horses lunge line for recall.

I like the horse lunge line because it's cheap, very long, stronger clasp, gentle on hands and harder for her to bite through in one chomp if something startles her / if it can hold a panicking horse it can hold a panicking dog

For training a puppy/dog in recall, would you suggest a 5m or 10m lead? He is a GSP so will eventually be 30kg.

You could do either. I'm preferring 5m because I found I was getting tangled in anything longer.

  3. A bit bitter sweet for Boss though - he's going in for the big snip on Tuesday!

Why has it taken three years for a rescue dog (kennelled or foster) to be desexed?

If I'm recalling correctly his owner kept him in the kennels for three years before agreeing to him being rehomed, meaning no one else could make any decisions about his welfare.

That's the gist of what I recall as well. I'm glad Boss has a new home :)

  4. If I had no way to access my own food and had to rely on someone handing me my daily allowance, I definitely wouldn't have a weight problem.

Thanks Lisa and TSD for your diagrams and pictures. I think Luna might be a touch underweight, her ribs don't feel like my knuckles but they don't feel quite like my fingers either. Did the rib test on myself, definitely overweight

  5. Would seem to me the obvious short term solution is to keep your own dogs on your own property and not let them go onto other people's places.

Obviously, but the baits were piled against a boundary fence. They were accessible from outside the baited property. That's why existing requirements are that signs are erected and neighbours notified, which wasn't done.

  6. I used the links on this page heavily.

    http://www.gsdcv.org.au/feeding_your_puppy

My vet has always commented that it's lovely to see a dog that's at a lean but healthy weight. There is an age to weight table in one of the downloads, specifically for GSD's done by Karen Hedburg, who is very well respected.

I fed Royal Canin GSD junior and followed their feeding guide loosely... They break it into desired adult weights and I picked the lowest weight which was just under 30kg if I remember correctly (we're on raw now and my last empty bag recently went in the bin). I did cut the kibble slightly and feed a chicken drumstick once a day as well.

  7. And that's the thing - every breed has it's particular traits...some of us see those as awesome and others see the same traits as unliveable. If you don't like hair then DON'T get a Dalmatian :D

And if you like using the loo alone and not having pleading love eyes on you all the time, maybe not a flattie. Hahaha.

Both of these, and also if you like being able to stretch out on the couch or in bed, don't get a GSD.

  8. I bought citronella oil from the supermarket and put it in a cheap spray bottle. I just sprayed it directly on the wood that I didn't want chewed. You could also just paint it on I guess. I think I diluted mine because it was such a strong door and I didn't want to make her sick.

  9. Well, now I feel bad.

    Why?

Can't leave puppies inside as they are in full destructo mode atm. Can't leave them crated because they can't hold on for hours on end. Can't leave them outside because apparently that's bad, too.

So do what works for you and your dogs. This thread is proof there is no one size fits all formula for owning a dog.

  10. Bumping this thread as we have made the switch to raw. I'm feeding a BARF mix and raw meaty bones. Just wondering what everyone's opinion is on mixing some warm rice or porridge through the BARF mix to warm it up? Luna doesn't like eating it cold or at room temperature, and I'm too afraid of warming the mix directly in case I cook it.

  11. I would suggest making her a nice safe fenced in yard where she still has enough room to have a play, but is secure enough that she can't get put on her own.

I grew up on property and we always had a well fenced house yard to keep the dogs from going off on a jaunt.

  12. If my dog was going to another room, you can bet anything that she's either stashing a bone somewhere inappropriate, or shredding something that does not need to be shredded

She sounds like she's pretty chill with life.
