Get a trainer to show you how to use one. Can be very effective if used correctly- useless if not!

There are many members here who would disagree with you (after their own personal experience) with regards to a professional behaviourists abilities in resolving aggression issues in conjunction with an owner. No one is suggesting its a cure all and will make the dogs best friends but it can't be any worse than the current escalation that you have on your hands right now. What have you got to lose?
-
There are plenty of exceptional behaviourists who do not offer guarantees. They don't offer guarantees because (a) dogs are not machines that can be programmed and (b) the behaviourist is not the only input into the dog- the owner significantly influences the behaviour of any dog. What nekhbet said.

What do you mean you've tried separation? Have you seen a behaviourist?

I have 5 dogs and they are all inside dogs for the most part, particularly 2 of them who can't be outside for periods when we aren't home as one has allergies that go nuts if she is on the grass too long and the other has HD and ED which means he shouldn't play and run for too long! They don't get many formal walks as such but they come to lots of places, do lots of little training sessions etc. They are all a bit different with what they like so we cater to that too. They hate going out in awful weather and so do i so we might do something else or they might just spend the day with us lying on the couch.

Is This The End Of Any And All Trials In Victoria?
Cosmolo replied to KismetKat's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Although by the definition mentioned we're not a DAB- we had to register as one too for a numbr of councils- they are all different in what they require. Hopefully the 'not for profit' nature of the organisation can help you. -
I didn't say anything about giving a pup away- i asked what you were doing differently. You can't do the same thing as with the last pup and expect a different result. Maybe have a look at the tricks in the training forum and start teaching a few- tricks can help to speed a bond along a bit as can some puppy massage.

Whats Wrong With My Staffies Tail?

Looks too specific for a flea allergy to me. Take the dog to a vet to get it checked. Treating conditions incorrectly can do more harm than good. -

Just received confirmation that Worksafe Victoria is going to have an Elf collecting around the workplace- thanks Worksafe!!! -
Hope he is okay- i have always loved the pics in your signature of your dogs.

What are you doing differently with this puppy vs the last puppy? What did you change before getting this pup to try to ensure the transition was smoother and this pup was a better fit? What sort of activties are you doing to bond with the pup at the moment?

Wow, i didn't realise Shirley Chong used e collars. As Shirley said, for most dogs- the earlier steps will be sufficient. -

We have now started to email out all of the Elf information- if you do not receive an email by the end of the week and would like one, please email [email protected] or pm me through DOL. If anyone is willing to donate prizes for a raffle, that would also be fantastic. -
Clover he is gorgeous- i saw him last week and he looks like a spunk. Having seen the pups, my guess is Koolie too.

Should You Go To Obedience Even If You Find It Boring?
Cosmolo replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think we also need to remember that each person is different- what one person finds easy and not in any way a challenge will be extremely difficult to another person. Some dog to dog socialisation at class can be counter productive for some people, particularly with young or inexperienced dogs as it is then very hard for them to get their attention again. The people are learning new skills just as much as the dogs so its important to make it as easy as possible to start with. Some people just don't like obedience and therefore if its not fun for them its not fun for the dog and so the cycle continues! Remember also that some people have had information covered (like manners, dog park rules) in earlier levels of training so then if that is covered- they will be bored too. It is a balancing act in a group class and therein lies one advantage of private training! I completely agree that agility and some other activities are great for bonding, more exciting etc- but the dogs have to be under some form of control before they can participate in such things. -
Are there any photographers available on the 28th November for a dog related fundraising event? I have asked all the ones i know and they are all booked so getting a bit desperate!!!
-
You MUST get a behaviourist. I was chatting to a friend and my OH the other day (we all work with dogs in this way) and we all agreed that every case of issues between dogs that we have seen has been left too long and would have been alot easier to resolve if we had been called out earlier. Don't wait for a fight between the dogs. Whereabouts are you located?

Should You Go To Obedience Even If You Find It Boring?
Cosmolo replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes- but find an obedience class that ISN'T boring!!! In saying that- there are also owners who make obedience classes boring through total lack of motivation despite an instructors best efforts. -

I don't particularly care what the supposed purpose was- i can't think of any explanation that would in any way justify that kind of abuse. -
Baltimore Police Dog Training Video
Cosmolo replied to huski's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
There is NO excuse for that. Even what he was trying to do he wasn't doing well. Huski do you think you should put a warning in the topic title- some people may not want to watch it. -
