  2. Damn, Jeff!! And I thought we had a hot date lined up when I am visiting Melbourne in two weeks!!
  3. So sorry Hedds, treasure the time you have left with her, and take comfort in the fact that you gave her a wonderful life, and will always have the memories...
  4. I walk Hazel (staffy cross from Rescue, approx 12 months old), with a Sporn halter. She is starting obedience training this weekend, but we have had to wait for a few months from when we got her until the next lot of classes start, and she is quite strong and pulls. I wanted to walk her regularly even tho she hasn't learned how to walk nicely on lead yet, and this seemed like the best solution (reccommended by Raelene from ARF). If you haven't seen a Sporn halter, they are a bit difficult to explain, but apparently have a website, I think www.sporn.com. I have done a little bit of reading about Haltis and Gentle Leaders, and while I don't know a lot about them, it seems to me that the Sporn halter doesn't have the potential for injuring your dog that some of the facial halters have.
  5. Jen, I haven't tried a Halti, but I do use a Sporn halter with my staffy cross, and it is great. You are right about the harnesses, they go across the chest and just give the dogs something to pull against. The Sporn halter was recommended to me by ARF, and a lot of the ARF foster carers use them .
  6. Hey all, gret thread, I had never heard of a martingale collar, and was wondering what to do as my dog slipped her colar on the weekend when we were out walking and were approached by an off-lead dog... ended up in that situation of having to tackle my dog and hold her above my head while the other dog jumped at me until the owners finally came and retrieved it...
  7. Hi missymac, Have just become a dog owner again, so I'll be interested to hear other people's replies. When I used to have dogs a few years ago, I would always go to All Creatures at Calwell, but for a few different reasons (which I won't go into here) I decided to change vets and went to The Gables - only went there once or twice and they seemed good. Moved to Queanbeyan for a while and tried both West Quenbeyan Vet Hospital and Queanbeyan Veterinary hospital. Both seemed to have good service, but I liked thevet I talked to at West Queanbeyan better (we were talking about a pet mouse with cancer, not a dog). Since adopting my two new doggies I had to take one to get her stitches out (from desexing). Went to the Tuggeranong Veterinary hospital at Fadden, they seemd friendly and helpful. When my new doggie got something nasty in her eyes (they were all red and swollen) and I called at about 7.20pm one night they couldn't fit me in, so back I went to All Creatures at Calwell - they did get me in before closing, and the vet was very nice. Not sure about how expensive they are compared to other vets, if you want to know I will PM you how much it cost to check her eyes and get some cream. Basically I am a single parent and don't have much spare cash ;) so I am looking for somewhere that is not exorbitant, but I don't mind paying a reasonable amount to know that they are going to do a good job and look after the doggies well. I know that there is a vet that a lot of teh ARF people use and say is good, but I can't remember the name, will try to find out for you - I didn't go there because it is northside and I am in tuggeranong.
