When I work my Boarding/Training dogs, I love it if the owners either have their dog's facial hair trimmed so I can see the dog's eyes, or allow the kennel's groomer to create her designer magic and have her trim it up for me. I read so much from a dog's eyes when I am training. I can manage ok with hairy faced dogs ..... it's just so much easier and more advantageous to be able to see their expressions.

Not familiar with Multivet Anti-bark Collars. Have you tried contacting the manufacturer and asking them who their registered maintenance people are here in Aussie?

China Police Dog Technical Competition 2004
Erny replied to koalathebear's topic in General Dog Discussion
Only watched Part 1 and Part 2. I'm not overly impressed. I see far finer work from our Schutzhund trained dogs than in those trials. The dogs don't seem all that tuned into nor interested in their handlers and as far as heeling is concerned ..... well, I can get a dog to heel by yanking it back and pulling it around on the end of the lead too. Hope Parts 3 onwards get better. But for now, for me ..... It's sleep time . ETA: I wouldn't mind being able to proof some stay work with distractions such as their performance though :D. -
So does that mean that if you use it monthly for the heart worm factor, you are actually worming your dog for intestinal worms 3 times as much as is normally the case (which btw IMO is far too frequent in any case)? And does it mean that if you use it 3 x monthly for the intestinal worm factor, you end up doubling up every 3 months if you then also give heart worm meds? I'm afraid I just don't see the point in a medication that will count for one thing but overdose on it if you want it to count also for the other thing. But then I have had a cold, my head and ears are blocked up and I'm a bit past thinking tonight :D .

Oh - going to the MDBA conference by any chance? Would you include me on your dance card, please Mr Jones? . And whilst I agree "Damn Mexican Laws" .... you can have, but you just can't use. But then again, what's the point? ETA: To the OP - sorry for the OT . Jeff has made me forget myself ..... ;) . ETA: I just realised this might embarrass Jeff if he thinks that not everyone might know I'm a girl ...... teehee -
I'm fairly sure I saw/read of feeding gadget thingies that are set to a timer and will open up so that your dog can be fed at times even when you're not there. Can't remember where I saw them or where you get them from but I expect a google search will produce something. Is it imperative that your dog have 3 - 4 meals a day? Is this for a health reason that you need to continue with for some time? If "no" to either or both of these, I don't know that I'd worry about getting the food gadget thing. If it is only a short term requirement, then perhaps popping home or paying someone you can trust to pop in to feed him at least the once during the day time would be more practical?

Where To Buy Long Thin Recall Lead For Practice?
Erny replied to Loungefly's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hey Sydoo - I want to clarify that I am Pro-K9. I re-read my post and realise this might not be clear to you. I guess I sometimes tend to think that everyone on DOL knows me. But just so that you know I am not trying to alias myself to make it look as though I'm some unrelated individual independently recommending the Pro-K9 product. But also just so that you know - the REASON I stock the equipment that I do is because I recommend certain quality equipment. Many of my clients would then ask "where can I get that?". I found it therefore easier for everyone concerned to stock the stuff that I myself would recommend and use and therefore be able to supply it. -
Hi Tracy. Not really - but the flies won't do so much harm. I think the bigger concern is the attraction European Wasps have to meat. I have gone outside to find my boy's bones swarming with Euro Wasps. I'd hate to think the outcome if he'd decided that he wanted to snatch at those buzzing insects!! So it bothers me. This is something you always need to be careful about with Kongs as well, as they seem to enjoy crawling in the hole to the food remnants.

Hahaha ..... If you tried that, not only would you not be permitted to train in class (I'm very good at spotting cord leads since the hand injury incident - funny about that ..... but that's operant conditioning for ya ) but you would also be made to shout me dinner . ETA: BTW .... Isn't it about time you were paying a re-visit to Melbourne? -

These will often do for many people although I found them to be a problem in that when the ground is wet they soak up the water and become extremely heavy. -

Pro-K9 sells 7m Syn-Tek long-lines. These are exclusive to Pro-K9 and they are the ones I use, which is why I favour and sell them. Pro-K9 leads and long-lines ETA: No way would I use thin nylon cord. Due to the stupidity of a handler at dog training many years ago (who insisted that he could make things 'do') and me jumping to save his runaway dog from exiting onto the road, I lost the tip of one finger and severely cut into a couple of other fingers all because the thin cord zipped through my hand as I made a grab for it. Saved the dog, but there was a lot of blood and a LOT of pain that lasted me a good couple of weeks or more. I was lucky. I healed. If anyone fronted in any of my classes with thin nylon cord for training with, they would be denied entry. -
Thanks Karly101. Found an abstract of the article (which is what you have printed). It was a 1998 Article. Seems it is one of those that unless you are a member or pay for it, you can't get the whole of the article. I'll check again later after classes (which I'm about to leave for).

Interesting Article: "why I Don't Believe In Clicker Training

The only thing I don't believe in are those who are close-minded enough to exclude training regimes, practices and tools that they don't believe in. -
Is This The End Of Any And All Trials In Victoria?
Erny replied to KismetKat's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
That was the current act, KismetKat - although I see (yet again) that I am missing the fact that it relates to the wearing of the Council registration tags and not to some exemption for being off lead inside an on-lead area whilst training. I don't recall there being a State Government regulation/legislation for this exemption though -
Where Can I Buy A Dominant Dog Collar In Brisbane
Erny replied to Tilly's topic in General Dog Discussion
I don't think I would be emotionally capable nor even professionally confident of taking a dog to the point of loss of consciousness and I would certainly be distressed at seeing this occur - but I would also be very reluctant to condemn a dog to death if it were the fact (as stated on the Leerburg Video) that two or three times would have the dog not aggressing upon a handler and evading the death sentence. -
Is This The End Of Any And All Trials In Victoria?
Erny replied to KismetKat's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
(2) Subsection (1) does not apply to- ... (e) a dog while it is being trained for or is participating in obedience trials or classes, retrieving game, hunting or some other customary sporting activity and is under the effective control of a responsible person; or I would have thought this would cover you ??? -
I haven't tried this myself for my own boy (he still 'squats' when at home) but I have been told that a "pee post" can be helpful for some dogs who cock their legs.

Agree with the concern the findings of the fox infestation percentage represents, Karly101. I would be very interested in reading the study that calculated those findings. Do you have a link you could point me to? But to my knowledge, I don't think it is as simple as what your last sentence (highlighted by me) suggests. My understanding is that for the heart worm larvae to develop to the phase where it can regarded as mosquito transmittable, the temperature needs to be a minimum of 14 degrees Celsius - even at night-time - for a constant period of 14 days. Any temperature drop below this during that 14 day period stops the larvae developing to the stage of being transferable from mozzie to dog. So it is not, to my knowledge, a simple matter of a mosquito being infected by it biting an infected dog and then buzzing over to the next dog and biting it. It is still something that deserves serious consideration, I agree.

And I think I mis-read the OP. Somehow.

KM - Try to think it this way ....... Remember that dogs live in the moment. That's what you need to do right now. Live in the moment. Not before. Not after. But now. Draw strength from doing just that. It helps. I promise.
-
Ahhhhh ..... now see, Danois - you are making the mistake of thinking there must be some reasonable logic in the minds of the law-makers. The only benefit of this law will be for the Councils who fine you for not having a tag. Dogs Victoria did a deal with the Government because they don't like tags on their dogs' collars in shows and in fact because many don't like collars on full stop because it ruins the dogs' coats. I don't like collars on at home for safety reasons - but safety and well-being of the animal doesn't count for anything.
-
Without looking it up and presuming these are the new laws that were recently passed shoved through in Victoria in spite of clear and reasonable objection, then this is the way I understand it : If you're out in public/on public land (regardless of whether you have your dog on-lead or off-lead) then your dog must be wearing its Council registration tag. Even if you have your dog's Council registration tag on you but not on the collar (because perhaps you are working off a training collar which of course you don't leave on when the dog isn't training/supervised), that's not good enough - you still stand to be fined $240.00. It's also not good enough that the Council Officer can check (using one of those hand held iPod looking things) that your dog's registration is indeed current. If the tag is not on the dog's collar you still stand to be fined $240.00. The only exemption to this requirement is if you have run your dog around the show ring in a Dogs Victoria sanctioned event at least once in the preceding 12 months. Stupid, stupid, unnecessary, wasteful, discriminatory and did I say "stupid" ..... law. Amongst many.
