  1. Conztruct, the owner of the dog apparently said that the dog had diarrhea and vomiting for several weeks which goes to say that perhaps they have not been as diligent as they should have been.

No.. that's an assumption on yours and the OP's part.. it was made clear that the owners had been to the vet previously.. noone knows if it was once or several times while they have been trying to diagnose the problem.

Speculation has these owners neglecting their puppy.. but being at the vet at least twice that we have been told about shows they are doing what a responsible and loving owner would do.. following up when something hasn't worked...

Can we stop the hystronics now??

  2. I must admit that I am still mystified as to why the dog was still having diarrhea and vomiting after several weeks? Shows the likelihood that perhaps the owner did try to stretch things out hoping that the problem would resolve itself.

Why are you mystified about a dog that isn't yours and a whole medical history hasn't been supplied because the OP doesn't even know the history! Sheesh!

Neither you, nor anyone else has any idea how long it was between consults.. the original one where antibiotics were given could have only been a week prior (given 5 days for AB's to be effective or realise they weren't.... pretty standard really.

Now you are freaking out Abigail.. and it's just a dramatic, over reaction without having anywhere near enough information about the actual situation to reach a valid conclusion.

  3. Large breed pups also drop weight like nothing else when they are crook. (so do smaller breeds, but it's often more noticeable in a larger dog).

They can look woeful in a few days... Monah has no idea what is wrong with the dog and the owners are getting help and investigating.. what any responsible and loving owner would do.

  4. She said she was talking to the owner AT the vets.. never mentioned that she had asked for the owners phone number to contact them further (already admitted that she had interrogated them.. however nicely... interesting use of words there)... the assumption is that she had every intention of calling the VET.. not the owner. She doesn't know the owner.. otherwise she would have said so.

Still WAY over the top and an overreaction to something she has absolutely no knowledge on. She making nothing but negative judgements on people who were at the evt seeking help for their dog....

  5. Ummm.. the vets have a policy NOT to tell you anything about someone else's dog.

They'd obviously been to the vets and have been treating their pup. What business is it of yours and what right do you have to be angry or freaking out about someone who is treating their pup for an as yet undiagnosed illness?

I would be pissed as hell to find out some random had called up about MY dog and knew nothing of circumstances.

  6. Ugh.. with a lid, yes.. without.. revolting.. a dog breathing all over food for guests *shudder*.

I will happily share my food with my own dogs when I feel like it, but I cannot stand dogs hovering near me while I eat... even if they are carrying a basket and it looks cute.

It's unhygenic to have a dog breathing all over food meant for humans.

  7. Even if laws are repealed (which I genuinely don't believe they will be regarding the APBT), councils will still refuse release from pounds under other legislation regarding dog aggression.

Fact is.. and I'll use Blacktown and Holroyd councils because I live in the area and spent time at the pound every day they were open for approx 6-7yrs... there IS a higher incidence of dog fights, bites and people attacks in these council areas.. fact is.. MANY (as much as people carry on like porkchops about media making breeds up etc) ARE Pitbull/crosses and Staffy x's. You have owners ADMITTING the breeding of their dogs and they generally are PROUD of their animals aggressive and undisciplined behaviour (much like their own behaviours really).

They get the focus of attention because their owners WANT it. They breed for traits that are not condusive to pleasant pets and they are still used in pit rings in areas around Blacktown/Mt Druitt/Riverstone and several other areas well known for it.

Ban the owners I say.. but it won't happen... so the dogs, regardless of laws or legislation, will still be culled by councils as they see fit... the difference is that they will have to blame the common behaviour seen instead of just the breed (which goes hand in hand in the area).

Changing the legislation will save a few good dogs owned by responsible people.. not the majority owned by redneck retards.

  8. BSL will be overturned, it is logical progression. It is a pattern we have seen in foreign countries who have been there, done that and dropped BSL.

    No it won't.

Not as long as certain individuals keep breeding for fighting, dog aggression and protection of their property (ie: their Hash stash/crop and VB empties collection out the backyard).

APBT owners in certain areas ARE the breeds worst advocates as they are less intelligent than their dogs yet retain the ability to speak and use their opposable thumbs.

Until deadshits stop owning and breeding them.. BSL will live long and prosper.. particularly in certain council areas in Sydney.

  9. You still haven't said if your dog and bitch have been appropriately health tested. You keep avoiding answering that so what else is there to assume except that you haven't done it?

This forum isn't here to encourage BYBing.

Obviously everyone hopes that Pearl is fine and it is also obvious that you don't have all that much knowledge otherwise you would know certain things regarding the physiology of a bitch when she is ready to whelp.

Part of becoming a registered breeder is learning the usual signs and symptoms of an impending birth and having mentors within the Labrador club or others in the breeder section here on DOL where you would be given respect and as much knowledge as anyone is happy to share with another responsible, registered breeder.

Unfortunately, being a BYB automatically means that you aren't being responsible.

  10. I agree with everyone else.. no need to PTS if she is happy and pain free.

My mum is horrified that I had my 13yr old Lab's back leg amputated a few weeks ago.. she won't visit here because she says Cordy will make her feel sick because I have mutilated her. She firmly believes I should have put her to sleep....

  11. Whilst we can't assume that the OP had no intention of ever becoming a registered breeder, by some responses, I don't really think it was a serious thought otherwise it may have been mentioned at the beginning of the thread.

I agree that no answer has been given regarding hip and elbow scoring, so I do believe it is safe to assume that THIS hasn't been done.. so yep.. yet another BYB litter of untested Lab babies... like there isn't already thousands born under those circumstances every year.

  12. I thought the furum was for purebred registred dog owners?

Actually, the forum is for anyone who owns a dog regardless of breeding.. BUT.. it is NOT a place to support, encourage or approve of Backyard Breeders... regardless of whether the dogs are pedigreed...

You were dishonest by omission. You still never admitted to NOT being a registered breeder. Only having registered dogs...

  13. I know what odema is and he did not say all bitches have a swollen vulva at the end of pregnancy

He should have. ALL female mammals swell (some a little.. dog tend to be a species who swell quite obviously) when they are at the end of their pregnancy..

He said because of this it is easy to mistake dilation when doing an internal

No.. really it isn't. Doing an internal requires going PAST the vulva/labia and feeling the cervix (which is NOT right near the external genitalia) with a finger.... not confusing or easy to mistake oedema for dilation of the cervix. You've obviously misunderstood your vet.

You really underestimate vets , perhaps you dont use them?

I query what some vets say.. but generally, I have a great deal of respect for most vets... it's their clients owners that worry me.. for good reason usually.

I don't need to go to the vet very often.. especially for whelping a litter... unless a bitch ended up requiring a CS (2 in over 20 litters) I have enough knowledge not to have to be going back and forwards to a vet for reassurance or information.

  14. Wonderful!

Cheering on a BYB litter of puppies... how ethical.

2 internals have been done on the bitch now.. and not even due.. pointless potential introduction of bacteria.

He is happy with her and apparently her vulva has odema ( sounds painful dosnt it)

Not to those who understand that oedema is simply the medical terminology for swelling (and swelling isn't necessarily painful).

and the other vet may have made a mistake about the dilation due to this.

Umm, how? Unless your vet has as little experience as you seem to with whelping, then I doubt any vet would say this as all bitches have a swollen vulva at the end of pregnancy... just like all female mammals do. A swollen vulva has nothign to do with a dilated cervix. The only way to know if the cervix IS dilated is to do an internal...

  15. Go to Quigley's Quality Meats at Pemulway (Greystanes).. Not only are they lovely guys.. my son is an apprentice there.

No idea if they stock turkey necks, but Pete will get them in for you if he can.

Otherwise.. go to Biada or Redlea in Girraween.. both stock turkey necks as far as I know... I can check on Tues if you like.

  16. I've rescued several foxhounds and had a litter of them as well (rescue bitch.. NOT that I bred the litter!).. Gorgeous dogs and i like them much better than Beagles... their nose does rule them, like most hounds, but they are intelligent if you find their motivation (usually food!) and when raised in a family, they are wonderful pets.. but very energetic and need a fair amount of exercise when they are teenagers.

They are very agile usually so good fencing is a MUST.

I love the breed. Their ears are like velvet. *sigh*

  17. Yep.. 13yr old Lab with secondary bone cancer. Broke her femur at the tumour site 4wks ago... leg removed 3wks ago and she is happier than she has been in over a year (not that she wasn't happy anyway, but she's even better!)

It was a REALLY distressing decision but knew I had to amputate as I simply couldn't put her to sleep and be sure I'd made the right choice... I now know 100% that I did the right thing.

She's now running around after her ball as she always has and we've started walking again.. we only go about 300m so far as there and back home she gets tired... she also has severe HD so the vet removed the acetabulum as well.. her remaining leg was her better one (which still isn't great but she's on carprofen and will start swimming) and is already starting to regain muscle mass.

  18. Parvo is endemic.

An outbreak would signify that there were times when the virus isn't present... there never is.

The virus mutates every few years or so too so vaccines don't always work (which is why vaccinated adult dogs can become infected.. not overly common, but is seen on occasion).

  19. I always have pre-bloods with a GA but my breed and several others are extremely sensitive to GA's.

Other breeds with a sensitivity to certain anaesthetics are also more likely to be highly sensitive to sedatives.

Why doesn't your vet just use Isoflurane like they do with Greyhounds etc?

My great Dane is only ever anaesthetised with Iso as it is one of the safest and brings them out quickly if need be.

Why is anyone having their dogs teeth scaled every 6mths (you suggest that your friend has more than one dog).. why would the whole lot of her dogs have to get their teeth done if they are on an appropriate diet??

  20. And yet again, another thread washes over a grieving owner and goes into0 foaming, rampant screams of 'it couldn't have been a Staffy' and BSL crap.

Look at the 2 dogs... they were Staffy x's.. as the owner admitted. They look like it too.

    Essentially though.. so what.

An old man has lost 4 of his dogs because some arsewipe retard doesn't have decent fencing.... they KNOW it was these dogs.. the owner has accepted liability.. he was only objecting to having the dogs put to sleep.. NOT denying that they attacked and killed this old man's dogs in their own yard.

Abigail.. seriously.. quit while you are far far behind, girl! Stop arguing a point that you just keep on contradicting... it's looking foolish.

  21. As an owner of 5 cats my secret is acrylic nails... saying no more

I have 2 cats and acrylic nails... makes like a damn site easier for pill popping!

My dogs either get it shoved down their throat or just simply wrapped in some cheese if I have any here. They couldn't care less.. sticking your hand into a great danes mouth is very easy :)
