  1. Not a dog but I had an elderly cat who had a series of strokes toward the end of her life. Over the course of 4 years she had five but always began to recover within around 24 hours and mostly back to normal after around a week. We did eventually have her euthed after that fifth one but she was nearly 22 years old so it wasn't really a surprise that she didn't bounce back so well after that one.

  2. We have a massive tick issue here and use only permoxin in on one if my dogs as she has a bad reaction to advantix and I don't like to use collars. I keep it in a spray bottle and mist her every few days mostly her underside and have never had a tick on her.

  3. I think to some extent it depends on the breed too. If you look at something like labradors or staffies that are dime a dozen backyard bred people seem to see a difference between pet dogs and show dogs but when I'm out and about with my basset who is 'only' a pet people always assume she came from a good breeder as she seems like 'that kind of breed'.

  4. I found a thread on here from about 5 years ago that refered to a vet in the Hills district and also one in West Wollongong that were doing it then. If you haven't already maybe ring around a few vets in those areas. Just for the purposes of info gathering I'd just pretend you are going through the process of getting a council order and if they don't do it themselves ask them to tell you who does. They might be more forthcoming with info then.

  5. Loved dogs living in houses with their people do learn a lot of human body language, they understand that smiling or laughing means your happy(and therefore might be happy about them and give them a pat!) and in a crowd of people they'd be likely to pick up on people exhibiting those same signs.

  6. When we visit at the hospital Josie has people who she has decided need more of her time. One lady in particular who was very frail and in the palliative unit :( but that was who Josie picked, she would lay on the bed with her for 10 minutes or more and place her head on her tummy and close her eyes, then when we tried to leave the hospital Josie tried to turn and go back to her room. When we visited the next week Josie made a beeline for her room again. This beautiful woman couldn't speak and could barely move but you could see the sparkle in her eyes when she realised the dog was there for a cuddle.

  7. I used to work at a pet supply store in Melbourne that had something similiar. The store didn't sell fluffy critters(fish and a few birds) but did have a groomer and a visiting vet that came for 2-3 hours a day. The clinic only did vaccs, discount chipping, etc, etc. The vet would look at medical issues but the person would be referred to the associated vet clinic if surgery, etc was required. Very successful concept.

  8. For me it depends entirely on the situation. Appropriate warning growl or even a small snap I leave them to it if it's directed at another dog who is behaving inappropriately, especially if it's a young puppy or similiar who needs to learn and isn't likely to respond with an attack, etc. Inappropriate growling at other dogs or at people and it is dealt with by me.
