  1. Yes! It'd be great if they came out again! 'All I see are dead ears!'
  2. Shouldn't this be in Off Topic? Even the burning building and children haters threads had a tangential relationship to dogs at some point but this doesn't.
  3. The argument that bad breeders advertise on these sites so ANKC breeders shouldn't advertise in the same space is a false economy. If all the ANKC breeders advertised in the same spaces then more people will see their ads.
  4. Hah, people should have a read about oxytocin. It certainly gave me a chuckle. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxytocin
  5. Unfortunately, the word ethical means different things to different people. What will, for example, looking at their house tell you? My sister got a couple of puppies from a "lovely breeder" and inspected the premises yet I'm convinced that the person was likely a broker. She met the "dam" of the puppies. Yet I didn't inspect my wheatens' breeder's premises because he was in another state. I didn't meet him until he brought Grumpy to live with me over six years later. He's the most ethical person I know, let alone an ethical breeder. Just how does someone unfamiliar with pedigree dog breeding tell the bad from the good by how the breeder's premises look or by viewing the supposed sire and dam? Truth is, you can't.
  6. I saw a photo recently of an American wheaten that hadn't been primped up for the show ring and it was amazing to see how close the style was to the Irish wheaten. Slightly different coat, heavier, and a much darker wheat colour but still, there was the wave in the hair as per the standard. The American wheatens tend to be shorter in the back. The measurement is the same but they measure them from a different spot so they have ended up with a shorter back, more in the kerry style. And I wonder now given I've seen that photo, how much of the American style is down to the Irish not sending their best dogs overseas? If you send over dogs with incorrect coats in the first place, don't whinge about them not having correct coats now. The wheaten in the video was very nice and I loved the 'Does he have eyes?' question. I've got that before. :D
  7. No, they're pretty hefty little dogs. The one I met probably weighed 17-19 kg. He did the sit, too.
  8. There's around 8 of them in Australia now. Don't know that they're more docile. The Irish terrier breeds seem particularly attached to people so that may be it. People say that wheatens are less terrier-like than most terriers but I've never seen any evidence of this. Certainly, every wheaten I've met has been more terrier-like rather than less  so docility might be along the same lines ... :D Kerry blues have the reputation of being firey but in that vid, it's the irish that's on its toes all the time. I think The Late, Late Show has a good audience in Ireland so I hope it has some positive outcomes for the breeds in their native country.
  9. Ah, the glen sit. I think all glens must do that.
  10. And those who think that dogs are child substitutes, try for some logic. Why would someone who dislikes children have a child substitute?
  11. The Late, Late Show in Ireland Friday night had a promo for the St Patrick's Day show in Dublin on 17 March. They had representatives of all the Irish native dog breeds. The Irish Kennel Club is now aiming to have the native breeds get a heritage listing.
  12. Noting again the dislike of those who don't like children. You should have a think about how you feel about mature members of your own species.
  13. What I'm finding interesting is the dislike expressed for those who don't like children. The OP at least has the excuse that a woman didn't want to sit next to her kid. Is everyone else's excuse the same? That you're offended because someone on an Internet forum might not like your child? Crisovar, perhaps you might like to comment since your view is coming out rather strongly. Speaking of telling, that is.
  14. Mini was dead keen on Kevin Rudd's resignation speech the other week.
  15. Grumpy was on the B/D for some time but came off it when he had his bout of probably-not-well-maybe pancreatitis at Christmas. Haven't noticed any difference in him since but he is still on Vivitonin so the difference, if any, is probably negligible.
  16. When I was a kid my family found our irish terriers and our kerry blue out of the newspaper classifieds. No internet back and my dad wouldn't have known anything about the ANKC then so question to the OP: how would we have found our dogs if not for the classifieds?
  17. Dory, I believe this is an offshoot of the burning building thread.
  18. To be fair it's not more pointless than the burning building thread.
  19. But it's not about children, it's about your problem with a woman who didn't want to sit next to your child. IMO, it is a problem when the dog has no manners, jumps up on visitors, gets talked to as though it's a human and understands them, gets a huge long monologue about why it's not allowed on the couch unless "Mummy" isn't at home, is allowed to beg at the dinner table when guests are trying to eat without being licked or if you're trying to have a conversation and the dog feels left out and starts barking. NOT acceptable dog behaviour - and shouldn't be allowed. This same dog was also allowed to hang around even after knocking a little 2 year old boy who was visiting! The kid was crying his poor little eyes out! And the dog's "parents" didn't even care These are my close friends but I really dislike their "parenting" techniques. I lived with them for 3 months and while I was there I did a bit of training the dog, teaching her to sit when people come in the door (sometimes works - bit hard when there's no consistency), to drop (which is handy when she's trying to eat your food when you're sitting on the lounge....) Oh and the kicker. It's a super energetic BC X Blue Heeler who doesn't get walked, living in suburbia. kept inside most of the time. (When I was living there, I let her outside in the back yard to let some steam off and they got home from work and asked why she was outside? Poor baby...) So that's my beef with dogs who get treated like children. Okay, but my comment was about people who have issues with strangers humanising dogs. Your issue is with your friends. Do you really care if I or anyone else on DOL that you don't know humanises their dog? You don't know us, it doesn't affect you personally, so why let it bother you?
  20. If someone cannot have children and decides to get a dog and treat it with as much importance as they would have done with a child, what is so bad about that? ...um...because they are a dog, not a child. People make a big deal out of not andromorphing (sp? humanising) animal behaviour on this forum. I think treating a pet as a child AND also feeling a dislike towards children, could be unhealthy. As far as humanising pets I think it is is a 'biggie' in this area. Again, just my personal opinion. But what's it to you if someone humanises their dog? I really don't get why people get so hysterical over what people they don't know do or don't do. It's no one's business but the person concerned, it doesn't hurt anyone, so why do people get so uptight about what strangers do? People really need to get over themselves.
