  1. I've read about switching to raw to help with behaviour issues because of protein, additives etc in commercial food, but never come across the suggestion that raw is too high in protein. You could maybe try googling to see what Dr Billnghurst and Tom Lonsdale have to say, if you don't have access to their books?

I had a reactive raw fed dog and old age calmed him down :).

Came across this site in a google search http://ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/beef/show and http://ndb.nal.usda.gov/index.html

I have all their books JackieW thumbsup1.gif

It is something I haven't heard before that's why I thought I would "throw'' it out there to pick other people's thoughts biggrin.gif

  2. just wondering about your thoughts about protein % levels and behaviour in dogs.

I have a 3 yr old male Gsd who has a high to very high level of reactivety who is fed raw meaty bones as his diet.

I have been chatting to a friend a FB about this and she mentioned lowering his protein levels to help calm him down

    Thoughts??????????????????????

  3. not a conformation brag, but an Adelaide Royal brag all the same biggrin.gif

My sheppie girls competed in rally obedience, held for the first time at the Adelaide Royal...

they both passed each of their two classes, Tasha winning both classes and Seven coming a close second in both too biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

  4. Hi Ness..

We were intending to give him his wings tonight, as hes had a really bad day.. But we have been in touch with our vet and the neuro tonight, well they spoke to each other also and we are going try high levels of cortisone.. if may or may not help him.. if theres no improvement over the next 48 hours or hes get any worse overnight, then we will give him his wings.. We just trying this one last year before totally giving up crying.gif

Thank you for caring enough to ask x

Oh Jules crying.gif I am thinking of you all...............heart.gifheart.gifheart.gif

  5. Another one for Dr Douglas thumbsup1.gif though my experience with him was 20 years ago now (maybe abit more)

I was doing agility with my cardigan corgi, Mitch, when he got the landing all wrong after the spread jump (back then it was huge) and he hyper-extended his neck frown.gif

Took him to the vet a couple of days latter, as he was extremely stiff through the neck/back and they placed him on anti-inflammatries, which of course worked by masking the pain, which meant he was back to running around.

Back to the vet to look at other options and they recommended Ian, who back then was working out of the Birdwood Clinic.

No such thing as MRIs back then, though the X-ray showed the damage to Mitch's spine and fenisration (sp) was recommended...............

We were quoted....from memory....$1500 or there abouts. We talked about our options, as Mitch was still a young dog 5 maybe 6 and very fit and he was my Mum's dog too!

Mitch went on to live till he was 16..............for us it was well worth the money.

  6. Its just a really hard call to make - especially when she does still have some good days/weeks. Its a thought that is in my mind but I am just not sure its at that point yet. I am still running a million different scenarios through my head and trying to work through it as best I can.

  7. What do you do with a mind that is so very willing but a body that can't cope with anything .

For me, it would be time to think about that power we have to give our furred family the wings to soar away from pain and frustration ..to leave broken bodies behind ...

I have been hesitating to say something similar as I couldn't find the words. I to have been there and done that. One of the hardest things ever. Take care, you are not alone

    I concur too crying.gif

I have been thinking about you Ness and your gorgeous girl over the last fews weeks and been thinking about "what if it was me"..............

We may have to let that beautiful free spirited mind free of her broken body crying.gifcrying.gif and let her soar free......................

Just know that though you may feel very alone atm, there is a whole community right behind you and will support you.

    Love light and peace

  8. been a week and haven't heard back from Barossa Council, yet.

It has given us time to get out and visit our new neighbours, one side has two rescue beagles and joking asked whether I would be able to help train her beagles biggrin.gif

The other side didn't even blink when we mentioned 3 Gsds, they were more relieved that we were going to be living in the house and not renting it out smile.gif

Settlement got moved back to this week sometime as the vendor ( who wanted a quick turn around) has had issues with their bank frown.gif

Mrs Rusty Bucket......don't have a cute puppy, though we did make it clear to come and talk to us first, that we are approachable and responsible with our dogs.

Oh and I also got our vet in Tassie from the past 8 years to e-mail a reference too..................

  9. We got 86/100 in the first trial :) Pretty happy with that score for my first trial ever!!

Second trial Billy decided it was crap - literally. I had been trying to get him to go all morning, and made sure i didn't feed him before we left. I stopped for coffee on the way and he ate 2 banana's I had in my bag. Obviously they decided to come out in the second trial - in the ring. Oops!!

3rd trial I scratched him. The rain was quite heavy by then and I couldn't even get him to sit ringside, so there was no point setting him up to fail.

All in all we had a great day. Everyone was so lovely, helpful and supportive (very different from showing!). I think Moorabin will be our next one :)

WELL DONE thumbsup1.gif the first of many biggrin.gif

  10. Thanks everyone thumbsup1.gif

Jules... we moved back in july last year, we had planned on only staying with our friend a few months, we were about to sign a contract on another house in Lyndoch back in Sept, but with the Olympic Dam expansion falling through, the flow on effect meant the Mike had to leave the job he was at as contracts had stopped and we had to pull out of signing on the dotted line :(

We both found work, but the banks weren't real keen on leanding $$ to us as we had only just started new jobs and most want at least 12 months working history............

We can never thank our friend enough who opened his house to the two of us, four dogs, two motorbikes and three cars for this length of time biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

  11. we are finally moving into our new house next Friday, after renting a bedroom from a very generous friend for the last 12 months.

I have just put a permit into the local council for "an excess of dogs" as we currently have 3 sheppies and a kelpie X.

We have been living in an area where the council is zoned for dogs & kennels etc and previous to living here, we were in Tassie on 2 acres where dog numbers were not so policed.

We are going to be living in a regional town on a good sized block and when I put the application in, I also had a covering letter out lineing my 30 yrs experience of dog obedience with various clubs and what my OH has done with nursing visiting.

I am getting quite anxious about the outcome as it is now down to "their" call.............

I normally am a very positive person, it's just "IF" they say NO to the 4 dogs..........frown.gif

    Any kind words of encouragement???

btw it is the Barossa Council

  12. Thanks westiemum. Still not sure what to do with her she is still very front end lame (although seems to have good moments) and her back end is bothering her with either patella slipping just about every day .

there is nothing I can say Ness frown.gif

though I can offer you this grouphug.gif

  13. Hi Guys

Just had to put in my brag. We had a weekend of obedience and rally. Gabby won open with 196 and ud 192 but we did flunk udx as we went to fast into the cones and forgot to put on the brakes :o oops and today in Rally Gabby was the first time in advance A and won that class with 98 and Inka got her second pass and got a second with 99 and I done my part time border collie Islay that I get once a week and she was in her very first competition and passed with 89 what good girlies

    WELL DONE Xena98 whee.gifand what good girlies............thumbsup1.gif

It was a long day yesterday, as one judge had to pull out at the last moment through injury frown.gif though it was a beautiful day weather wise thumbsup1.gif

I was pretty cuffed with my team also biggrin.gif particulary with my sheppie boy coming second by one point to your gorgeous Gabby in advance A.

Won't bore you all with the scores.....as I had my 2 sheppie girls, Seven & Tasha in RAE who passed at all 3 rally trials for their first 3 legs of RAE........my sheppie boy, Jim who passed also all 3 trials, though his handler did have a brain fart & picked up a 10pt for forgetting to sit on a station embarrass.gif Jim now has his RA biggrin.gif and last though no means least..........my "plus one" sheltie passed his first 2 RA legs in Sunday's double thumbsup1.gif

What was nice is that Saturday's trial was cash for 1st placings and between my 3 had a nice pay packet biggrin.gif One bottle of honey bourbon was purchased on the way home that afternoon laugh.gif

  14. Lots and lots of champus here tonight Xena 98 because this afternoon my little home bred boy, my pride and joy, became a GRAND OBEDIENCE CHAMPION.

I am just the proudest mum at the moment champagne.gifcheer.gif

This means he wont ever be referred to again as the occasionally clever one cheers.gif

So its now Grand Obedience Champion Ptolomy Choc Chip ADM JDM ADO JDO SPDM GDX SDX HWM (N) RAE Scoota to his friends banana.gif

Let the wine flow and worry about the headache tomorrow party1.gif

all one can say is two words........ WOW..........dancingelephant.gifrock2.gifwhee.gifwinner.gif

    and CONGRATULATIONS worship.gif

  15.:cheer: Way to go RS and Ruby. Yes that 3 steps heel back really does take a bit of getting the dog prepared on the approach to the sign (hence why mine find it much more difficult if there's a jump as the next station - heeling is not really on their minds - well to be truthful, it's never on Kirra's mind  . I must admit, I make stregic decisions with her - if she's in her normal feral mood, we just give that station our best shot, and move on - Having lost 13 points and a (skanky) Q by re-trying, I've learnt with her - if it doesn't happen the first time, it ain't going to happen that day  .

I'm not sure I'll be trying for RAE. If I do, we will be entered sparingly and I will only focus on one dog at at time. So Ruby might get a chance, we'll see!!

It's quite a long haul - and expensive - and a bit stressful if you have 2 dogs doing it (and even more so if they have slightly different cues ;-). I must just need to get a life. :-)

WELL DONE everyone on wonderful results.......again................. thumbsup1.gifthumbsup1.gifthumbsup1.gif

Tassie I have decied to have a go with both my girls in RAE too

Though I have gone two steps further with bringing my sheppie boy (Jim) up to RA and now my "plus one" Sheltie is very ready too for his first RA!!!

So for our next rally trial, which is a double, I will have a team of four, all four have slightly different cues for the same station, particulary the sheltie biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

Like you too.................I must get a life rofl1.gifthumbsup1.giflaugh.gif

  16. As you may guess by my user name, I ride motorbikes and have done for over 25yrs now biggrin.gif

They are one of my passions and are also a lifestyle choice.

My other passion is dogs.......3 sheppies and my husband's kelpie X, which we do showing, agility and obedience, they also are a lifestyle choice too biggrin.gif

Yesterday I was unable to compete in a rally trial, so I choose to take my bike out and just sit and watch my friends compete.

On the way home I was thinking about how two of my passions in life clash with each other as I can not combine both at the same time, that or I get my husband to design a sidecar for my bike rofl1.gif

What hobbies do you find clash with your other hobbies??????????
