Crate training is a great idea. My more nervous clients love slinking in to a crate when they arrive. It makes them feel more secure.

Im really sorry Pers, what an awful decision you had to make - one I am sure, with Mr Wilsons best interests at heart.

How is he with his owners grooming him? I'm wondering if they could pay a good groomer to show them how to do a basic clip in their own home? Or, a proper groomer in a vet clinic where he can be sedated, rather than a nurse doing a shave off and burning him again.

I wouldn't use, Scalibor plus Advantix plus Permoxin. A massive overload of chemicals (Advantix and Permoxin contain same main ingredient). I also wouldn't use scalibor for dogs who swim as it affects marine life.

It seems you are in a bit of a bind Leo as Advantix is really the best option. If it's any consolation you are traveling in the dead of winter so there wont be as many ticks (but still out there!)

THe penis lumps are normal. They are side by side - either side of the penis near the base - I think they're glands but someone will correct me if Im wrong. White dogs often have skin problems. Is he from a registered breeder?

What are DUOXO wipes? I dont know if Id be wiping his skin with any sort of wipe (depending on what they are).

Get some ALOVEEN shampoo for him. It is soothing and if he's going to be a 'skin dog' it will come in handy.

Diet is also something you could look at to help with his skin.

I can understand swearing under such circumstances. However there is a lot of gutter talk going back in to her history. Not that it matters, the story is that a dog was killed and that is sickening and devastating. It is clear though, IMO, that she's a "rough" kind of girl. No one deserves a dog attack! I guess what people are commenting on is that even without the dog attack part, the page is undesirable to most viewers.

One of my MAremmas was play biting his sheep in his teen years. His breeder recommended a Husher so I went and bought one. Put it on him, took it straight off and its been sitting here boxed ever since. There is no way I'd use something like that, there has to be another way. In your case, I'd rather use a bark collar. As awful as they sound it's not a constant punishment, they only need a zap a few times and they learn, and they work! Im not saying rush out and buy a collar, but I'd use a collar over a Husher anyday.

A friend of mine has a little dog who seemed off and had a raspy bark. She feared tick but the vet was adamant it wasnt as its not a tick area. Started treating the dog for meningitis and the nurse, 3 days later, found a tick!

All I can think, is that she had a friend visit from a tick are a week ago and I suspect it somehow traveled on her and then got on to the dog.

A YOUNG Brisbane woman has described how her puppy died in her arms despite resuscitation attempts after being attacked by a bull mastiff this week. Nineteen-year-old Tauri Chris said she was traumatised after her dog was killed by a bull mastiff on Wednesday only metres from her Calamvale home.

Ms Chris was walking her Pomeranian, Bella, at Orania Cresent about 5pm on Wednesday when she was approached by a man and his bull mastiff.

She said she called for the man not to come any closer but the dog attacked.

“My puppy died in my arms,” she said.

“I’ve never been more traumatised and messed up by anything in my life.

“My mum came up and gave Bella CPR and she came back to life but then she died a couple of seconds later.”

Ms Chris said she felt like she had lost a member of her family.

“My life was dedicated to that puppy,” she said. “It feels like my child has died.

“She was the most funny, loving dog. She was my best friend.”

A 55-year-old man from Calamvale has been charged with wilfully killing an animal. He is due in the Richlands Magistrates Court on October 28.

Police and council officers are still looking for the dog, described as a grey and white bull mastiff.

Calamvale Police Senior Sergeant Lance Bowman said earlier: “She tried to get in and break the dogs apart, but being that it was a big dog the little Pomeranian didn’t have a chance.

“The owner ... was very distraught. It would have been horrendous to see that.”

All fixed, crisis averted!

I don't call Max the "alpha" or "dominant", I just used it as an example in here, I refer to her as "bratface" when she's having a moment of being a bossy brat. She will have a stand-off with me, but I always win (well, most of the time - she IS a pug ) but I still don't think that's her being dominant, just testing her pug stubbornness.

I don't give any real focus to dominance theory. That's not saying I don't think dominance is real, but there is a lot of confusion IMO about what it is. I control resources and I pay behaviour I want to see, not in any set order or playing to which dog I think could be the 'dominant' one at the time.

Submissive is a choice the dog makes, my Mal will choose to be submissive to other dogs including my beagle a lot. However she's an extremely confident and socially dominant dog. I think sometimes people misread submissiveness as soft or weak just like we get confused about what behavior we label as dominance.

I agree. I think a lot of people are quick to label an alpha dog when the dog is just a bossy boots. Sometimes when push comes to shove I find the bossy, seemingly alpha dog, is not really alpha at all. My old Maremma female is the top dog of the dog crowd here. I dont know if Id call her an alpha, she is not dominant with me at all - but will let me know in no uncertain terms not to do something she doesnt like. I treat her as the top dog too, it's the only way to keep the peace. My Stafford bitch and the old Maremma have 'tense moments' but if it comes to it, the Stafford backs down. She is far stronger than old Snowy physically, but I think she respects that Snowy is older, wiser and a far bigger bitch. I see a truly alpha dog as one who challenges their owner as well.

But in the interest of peace and not creating confusing among the pack, I treat the dogs in the order that they see themselves.

I once had a truly alpha male Rotti. Every day with him was a challenge and sometimes he made my hair stand on end. In the end I lost my nerve with him and he knew it. He was a surrendered foster as the owner didnt want him around their grandkids. Just when I was considering pts a tremendous home came up from an ex police dog trainer in the middle of nowhere in the Snowy mountains so off he went. I breathed a huge sigh of relief to see the back of him. After dealing with him, I dont call many dogs alpha.

My old MAremma is about the same age. She wont lie on bedding indoors as she gets too hot but I put a bed in front of her so she can grip on that when I help her up. She knows now to grapple for the bed. It's heartbreaking to watch She is on Carprieve daily. It didn't seem to help her last winter but this winter it has. So if you've tried a drug before which didnt work and have had a break from it it's still worth giving it a shot again down the track.

Thanks aliwake. I didn't think of the enviro aspect regarding my guys swimming with them on. I am going to get a couple as we are going away camping soon up north so I will use them in conjunction with the Advantix :)

Id check with your vet, if not already, about combining two preventatives. Sometimes it can be a toxic mix and make the dog ill.

I agree with others that you should consider returning pup to the breeder for rehoming. It is best for her and perhaps best for you in the long run though difficult at first. Sounds like you have a difficult time ahead - good luck.

I agree. If you're unable to find suitable accomodation with your dog then the dog should be rehomed. As heartbreaking as it would be for you, it's the best outcome for the dog

Trudy, I'm not wishing to offend, but I was wondering if you could teach yourself to comment all in the one post pretty please. The multiple posts from the one user is annoying as I've just gone back to re read a lot of pages as I've missed other peoples posts whizzing through your multiples. I actually thought it was against forum rules to repeatedly post as it's considered trying getting your posts up, but I can't find anything about it so perhaps it has changed, either way it's unnecessary, irritating and makes topics difficult to follow.

Yes, you can. You just need to be sensible. I know of literally 100's of homes (clients) who have cats and use Advantix.

I use frontline as we have cats and young kids. I therfore wont use advantix or collars.

Although I worry about efficancy after reviews on this site..

The cat thing I understand, but not the kid thing. Do some reading on Fipronil. Unfortunately for any of these products to truly be effective there is usually some level of toxic material. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I'm also looking at Advantix. Is this not a wise thing to use on my two dogs if I have a cat?

I've used it for many years with cats in the house. I apply the advantix carefully in a few spots down the dogs back. If you don't squirt it on all at once you don't get run off. Once it dries and binds it is fine. But if you have a dog and cat who are physically close and the cat grooms the dog etc, best to separate for 24 hours. I did however, make a really huge and stupid mistake one night. I had put a tube of Advantix in the Advantage box once and the next time I went to do all my cats and dogs I didn't check the tubes. One of the cats copped a large breed dose of Advantix on the back of his neck. When I came home he was seizing on the floor. Rushed him to emergency and about a week later he came home. He's not ever been quite right since. One side of his face sagged for about a year but that has since gone back to normal, but it's definitely affected his brain. I continued to use Advantix as the threat of ticks was just too great but obviously check tubes in a paranoid manner since. Even when the tube is in the bin, I still go back for 'one more check'. I've lost two dogs to ticks, both with Frontline - hence my not being a big fan of its efficacy.
