Dog Orthopaedic Surgeon In Brisbane Needed - Advice Please

Good afternoon,

I have a 6-year-old poodle that was operated on (with no great success) by a local vet when he was just over 12 months old.

Both knees were done at once, which I'd struggle to ever put my baby through again.

He was my first dog and at the time I just didn't realise we could have gone to a 'specialist'.

Can anyone suggest a, I guess, orthopaedic surgeon that is top class with years of experience who will give honest advice what to do about one of my little boys?

He doesn't really seem in much pain, will jump on the lounge, but is becoming very fussy with floor surfaces and has started nibbling at his knees and sometimes sitting down in one spot very quickly and biting his leg. I'm sure this is a sign.

His knees are always out of place (advised by local vets in past couple of years) and his legs literally click in and out. It looks terrible!!!

I have been told in the past it's likely to turn to bad arthritis if not attended to and I think it's about time we got some serious advice as it's not really seemed to have bothered him until now.

Thanks Kylie

If surgery is required there is a vet at the Sunshine Coast Vetinary Specialist Centre who will investigate and treat joints with an arthroscope. He is the only vet in Qld currently using this method on small domestic animals.

This means that the surgery is done with small incisions and a camera etc rather than opening up the whole joint which is much more painful and takes longer to recover from.

He is excellent and in my experience not keen to operate until all other avenues have been exhausted. So nice to find an ethical vet who is more interested in the dog's welfare than making money!!

My first visit with him took almost an hour. My dog was fasted and ready for surgery but he sent us away to make sure we'd tried every treatment possible before he operated. He was happy to discuss the options at length during the consult and during subsequent phone calls. He fielded my questions willingingly and patiently. We ended up operating 2 months later knowing that we'd done everything else and surgery was the only option.

His name is Dr Richard Mitchell. 5453 7555.

If it is arthritis and doesn't require surgery there is a Vetchiro at Ormeau who does great work in this field. He uses homeopathic anti inflammatories and accupuncture to relieve symptoms with great success. His name is Dr Rowan Kilmartin. 5546 6756

Thanks for your replies so far.

I am currently living on the Sunshine Coast however can stay in Brisbane.

I'd heard the name Dr Richard Eaton-Wells quite a few times and have heard nothing but good comments.

My boys had their vaccinations this morning at the Suncoast Vetinary Hospital at Caloundra. They have advised me of Richard Mitchell and said that my boy definitely has a very bad case.

blacklabrador - Could you please let me know how successful the operation was? Were both legs operated on? Richard Mitchell does sound very good.

I'm just so upset by the thought of him having to go through this. He's a very sensitive poodle, very cuddly and I'm concerned his personality will change as it did last time. Depressed!!!

Keeping the two boys apart and not having the young one jump all over him will be an issue.

If anyone could give me more details on either of these specialists, with personal experience, it would be great.

Thanks

Richard Mitchell on the sunshine coast!!!!

Richard is wonderful, I have used him and know many others that have had great success with his work. Definately worth the drive.

I was sitting at the dog physio about 3 months after my dogs op and Richard called me just to see how things were progressing. Great follow up!

Richard used an arthroscopic camera when doing the surgery and I got to watch the opperation afterwards.

Richard is great. We are seeing him for our Spin. His staff even take their pets to work with them. He's very professional, very nice, spends a lot of time explaining everything, all options and outcomes and doesn't sugarcoat anything, tell it like it is. I'm very impressed. Was shocked at the account though!! ;) It was only about a quarter what I thought it'd be.:(
