alicias Posted July 12, 2009 Share Posted July 12, 2009 (edited) Hi all, my 8 month old labrador X poodle has had an ongoing problem with diarrhea and is currently taking peptosyl and z/d ultra to control it, the vet believes he has inflammatory bowel disease and may need to go on steroids to fix it, however the peptosyl is working well and I was wondering if anybody knew if there were long term use side effects from using peptosyl, he is taking 5ml once a day. InspectorRex Posted July 13, 2009 Share Posted July 13, 2009 Inflammatory Bowel Disease needs to be diagnosed by endoscope( I know as I suffer from the condition and have had one dog a fews years ago diagnosed with IBD by endoscope) performed by a Specialist. Has the Vet put the dog on metronidzole(flagyl) ? Peptosyl should not be used long term (says so on the bottle). You usually give a dose every 6 hrs for the first 36 hrs then 2-3 times a day for 3 days. Has the Vet taken a poop sample to send away for faecal float and analysis to rule out things like Guasrdia, salmonella etc? Let us know how your furkid gets on please. All possible tests have been done except invasive surgery/endoscopy, yes flagyl has been tried unsuccessfully. As for the z/d you need something non processed and eliminate everything from the diet. What other foods have been tried, has an elimination diet been done properly or just the z/d? flagyl will only help if there is an anaerobic bacterial infection in there, from the sounds of it you just have a very sensitive dog with many food problems. alicias Posted July 13, 2009 Author Share Posted July 13, 2009 Initially he was eating the BARF diet, raw chicken carcass and mince as this was what the breeder recommended he be fed, after the diarrhea started he went onto sensitivity control dog food for a lengthy period of time, with no success, now he is on z/d and has been for 4 weeks. Maybe you could just try the diet first? I'd always avoid the steroids option - i thought I'd have to put my dog down because he was impossible to live with whilst on steroids - I tried for 2 years but it was very hard.
