Desexing Whilst On Heat

 Share

Recommended Posts

Advise please DOLers

Neighbours pom is on heat at the moment and she has had her seperated from the other male pom

long story short the kids let the male inside and he got to the girl.

You know the rest..... :hitself:

She had her booked in for desexing when she came on heat so has postponed it, as the vet told it was risky to do whilst she is on heat

I have never heard of this, however having my girls done young i avoided the whole on heat issue.

Now the deed may have in fact been done, shes not to keen on a littler of pups so i suggested desexing now, whilst on heat and or aborting if anything is there

How far would she need to be for the vet to know if she is in pup and will desexing her now rid of the pups if its early stages anyway.

The other thing she is concerned about is the cost, vet said more if she is on heat and more again if she is pregnant

Advise please so i can pass on to her

They can be desexed whilst in season, or pregnant. Yes it is more risky and usually more expensive too. But it can be done. And yes, if she is desexed now then the pups will be aborted as the entire uterus is removed.

Another option is the Alizin (abortion) injection. The bitch requires two injections exactly 24 hours apart, and the litter will be aborted. It can be done any time up to day 45 of pregnancy but if done earlier the success rate is higher. There can be side-effects.

I think it would be best for her to discuss these options with her vet :hitself:

I had a dog get to a bitch in season and they mated and i did not want the pups.

You should wait til the season is finished then vet will desex and abort foetuses. It's much safer to do the surgery after the season than during it.

It should not cost much more than regular desexing. I'm only guessing, but i wouldn't say more than double a regular desexing cost.

Tell her to ring around and get quotes if she is concened about the cost.

A vet I use has a $30 to $40 'on heat' charge on top of normal desexing costs.

How long ago did the mating happen and how long has she been on heat?

she has been quoted $280 for the dog ( shes a pom) then more if on heat and more again if she is in pup

been on heat a week now i believe and mating today

Heat lasts for approx 3 weeks. Vets usually like to wait at least 2 weeks after they have come off heat to desex.

I suppose it's your friend call as if she wants to desex straight away or wait.

$280 is on the upper end of normal price range for desexing a mature bitch of that size.

That is a rip off price for a bitch that small

I pay that full price for a 20kg bitch

Wait for the heat to finish and desex 7-14 days later

Safest thing to do

ETA, are they on the Central Coast?

PM me for a vet that will do it much cheaper than that

I agree that this is a ridiculous price. You should be able to get it done for $150 - $200. You need to shop around.

If desexing when pregnant about 10 to 14 days from now would probably be best. Less risky that early into a preganacy than doing while she is in season.

I agree with finding another vet. My mature 18kg bitch was just spayed for $170 including pain medication and I think my vet may charge an extra $20-$40 if pregnant or in season.

Travelling to another vet may be the the cheaper option and if it is too far to drop her off and then pick up again find a vet who will let you wait and then take her home when she wakes up. I have just done this even though it was my usual vet. I arrived ay 10am she was done between 11-11.30am and I took her home about 1.30pm.

$280+ to spay a tiny dog is an absolute rip off. They definitely need to find another vet.

That is a pretty standard price for a bitch spey.

Be wary of discount desexing prices, costs have to be cut somewhere and it is usually in the quality of the anaesthetics and the use of pain relief.

I disagree. Inflated vet prices are often due to greed and over-servicing. Lower vet fees do not always mean lower care.

Usually smaller owner-run business are cheaper... as opposed to chain-run or larger hospitals whose owners are not the vets working there, but business people looking for profit.

A vet is not somewhere that the saying "you get what you pay for" usually applies. High cost does not always equal high care.

Does as far as I am concerned, as I know my vet and trust him, and he knows my dogs. I know they will be well cared for. WoUld you shop around for a cheap surgeon for yourself, or would you go to someone you know and trust?

When I had a rescue dog sent up from Griffith, she arrived on heat and all my other dogs are males so it was a nightmare for 3 weeks

Couldn't find a vet that would desex on heat{rang about 5 in my area}, but one said it wouldn't matter if she got pregnant anyway as he would desex 2 weeks after and abort any foetus. Only had 1 entire male at the time so he was the main one I had to watch even though the others were keen too, gave me a few grey hairs I can tell you!!

This has reminded me, must get her booked in *grin*

I totally agree. Around our area that is a pretty standard fee. It is riskier to spey a bitch thats on heat, and there for a higher cost as it can be a trickier procedure. Have a chat to your vet. Good luck

In my experience the better vets are also the reasonably priced ones. The really good vets get lots of clients and as a result are able to keep prices down. Everytime I hear horror stories about incompetant vets it is usually one that charged inflated prices. Some just seem to prey on unsuspecting owners and charge whatever they think they can get away with and often do a lousy job at the same time. There are far more bad vets out there than there are good vets.

My vets are used by a large proportion of breeders from all over Sydney and are dog repro specialists as well as bird and wildlife specialists. They are extremely good vets and charge very reasonable prices. The vets I used before these ones were very cheap and also very good vets but did not have the after hours service that breeders need to have available. Their theory on pricing was if the prices were kept down owners would bring their pets in at the first sign of trouble when they were easy to treat. If the prices are high owners tend to wait it out to and only go if the situation is desperate, resulting in much sicker dogs that need a lot more treatment or dogs that don't survive.

Obviously the price will vary depending on the rent/mortgage that the vet has to pay on their premises so you would expect vets in areas with higher priced real estate to be more expensive but that does not make them better vets. The difference in vaccination prices is a prime example of how some vets clients off. They all pay the same amount for the vaccine and there should not be a difference of $30-$80 for exactly the same service.

I would find a cheap surgeon that I trust. Expensive doesn't always equal good.

Not judging anyone, read my post it's worded carefully to say... Expensive does not always equal good, so shop around.

My vet charges half what a standard clinic would charge and is on call for me 24/7 and goes above and beyond to care for my dogs. So coz he's dirt cheap...does it mean his level of care is poor. Definitely not. Expensive does not always equal good.

Read MY post. Did I say expensive was good? The point of my post, I don't care what it costs if I know my dog is in trusted, capable and caring hands.

Why shop around if I have a vet I trust my dogs with?

I agree, you are very arguementive gareth

The vet I have recommended is a one man show, he is a fantastic vet, helps the lower income people in the area and does alot of work for rescue

I use him for my own dogs and have found that a one man show is normally better
