Fixing The Fence Again!

Bah! Permission to go and slap my neighbours? So over having to check my back fence every morning just incase. Glad i checked it this morning, once again it is torn apart. GRRRRRRRRR!

I now have to cancel my trip out with the kids until I can make sure the fence is secure.

My neighbours dog (supposedly pure Amstaff :cheer: more like labx pit) is the same age as Bonnie (16mth) and has not been out of his 6m x 3m(max) concrete yard since he was 6wks old. He is never allowed inside no matter what the weather, they dont talk to him, only drop his food in his dog bowl and that is it. The poor boy, I feel so sorry for him. He barks constantly (Ive heard him many times at 3am in the morning) and is forever trying to dig into our yard. Digging I can deal with (albeit with chicken wire, steel posts and many planks of wood along the ground on my side of the colourbond fence). But this is p'ing me off big time!

This is the 5th time this year that he has became so bored at night (1am last night) that he has started throwing his body into the 6ft high colourbond fence, over and over again untill....he has split right through the colourbond!!!!

For some reason, wether he is afraid of Bonnie or his owners I dont know, he has never actually came into our yard (THANK DOG). I am dreading the day that he gets brave enough to come into my yard, I have rabbits, avaires, dragons, plus my dogs and kids. He seems ok with my dogs under the fence but anytime I go near to fix the holes he digs he tries to snap at me. Terrified it happens when the kids are outside (or my dogs, other pets for that matter).

Far out! So Sh*tty right now. OH wont be home until 6pm to screw/reinforce the fence so in the meantime I am on guard duty. Ive put some spare pool fence panels against it but still. Bloody neighbours, if they would just pay some attention to the poor dog we wouldnt have these problems. Not the dogs fault but FFS, over it!

ETA- Sorry for the language and the rant. By splitting through I mean 1-2ft gaps!

Sorry to hear about your situation Julzjc,

It' time to call council and at least ask for information, they may suggest you put in a complaint.

The dogs barking, he's causing damage to property (take a photo of the damage if you can) and they have penned him on the property border which I'm pretty sure is against regs. (animal enclosures have to be a certain distance from houses and boundaries.) Maybe the council ranger can make a visit and inspect the dogs living situation which sound far from ideal. If the living situation is bad enough, the RSPCA may be called.

Don't blame you at all for being p'd off!!!!

Its so not on! I would definatley be going to the council and/or the rspca. The dogs living conditions is just wrong, I feel sorry for the dog, BUT you cannot just not do anything about it, cause if he does dicide to come into your yard and run a muck it will be things that cannot be replaced that he might harm, unlike a fence.

Have you spoken to them/letter , if so and no response then report to council

I Would try to let them know 1st though , I got a letter in mb from a neighbour[unknown] my new rescue was barking while i was at work, glad they let me know b4 going council, I dealt with it straight away .

Having said that they should notice the fence situation, but then they don't sound like they go into the yard to see it

Have you spoken to them about it? Maybe given them some pointers on how better treatment of their dog may result in less boredome/destructive behaviour?

Some neighbours don't pay attention. Our neighbours' dog digs under our fence and sticks it's nose and paws through. Sasha is not a dog aggressive dog, but she is of course territorial and snaps at it's face/paws. Usually she ends up hurting herself, but if that dog got any further through - I can't say what would happen. She is the only dog that Sasha genuinely dislikes. We've tried boarding it up, to no avail. So we've warned the neighbours - I'm not going to keep Sasha out of the area as it's her main living area - it's the side of the neighbours house (not living area for the dog) only about 1/2 a metre wide so they could easily shut it off - so if they don't do anything, don't complain. Sasha isn't a fence runner - only when this dog tries to dig under - we have no problems with the dog on the other side and they get along like a house on fire.

Otherwise, yes I'd go to the council and report it immediately. I would also consider a call to the RSPCA (if it doesn't get out to get walked etc). It sounds like a desperate dog... poor thing. But it's a danger to you and your family... so take no chances.

Oh they deffinatly know about his barking! He barks right outside of their bedroom window! I had to put up with a few months of my kids waking up saying "mummy Im scared of Rockys barking" at 1,2,3,4,5am before they learned to sleep through it. Lucky-ish we live on a 900m block and our house is at the front of the block, I feel so sorry for the other neighbours which have bedrooms 1m away from Rockys fence!

They seem like nice people but I do wonder why their house is a fortress, to sets of 9ft piked gates to get to there front door (plus Rocky), 3 surveillence cameras at the front, speaker phone, barred windows....not really sure if they are the kind of neighbours I really want to P'off....oh and its a rented property!!!!! The RSPCA wont do anything, he has a kennel (as of may!) and gets food and water  .

My OH has politley/sternly said to tell her sons to walk their dog as he is going crazy with boredom " oh I do but they dont listen, we got the dog for them, its their dog "..." oh is that Rocky being a naughty boy again". Today was- " Oh we had people round and he just gets so excited when he sees people, so we shut him in the pool fence, but its ok my OH will fix it when he gets home. Hes just a crazy dog, I dont know what gets into him"...Bah! Boredom is what is wrong with him, poor boy.Atleast for once they noticed the fence. Oh then she said " Your dogs fight all the time! You should be careful with them!"....Ummm yeah, its called the sound of dogs playing! Ofcourse if you ever played tug with Rocky or socialised him then you would probably know that (I didnt say that outloud). Im home 24/7 with my dogs basically so I know what they are doing, only time they have a barney is when they catch a bird and have to sort out who gets to keep it.

If I do report it, what can the council even do about it? He is not constantly breaking through the fence, they would know it was me, what if they take offence and purposly let Rocky through the fence next time he does it? He looks in great condition so not much they can do. Ive spoken to the other neighbours, they hate the dog but Im pretty sure there is a good reason why they havent reported to the council. Not sure which is the greater evil, not reporting it and trying toget on with it (reinforce the fence as much as possible plus concrete along the fence line, would have to remove my orange tree) or report it and run the risk of nasty neighbours (putting my kids and pets at more risk)?

ps I dont even live in a bad neighbourhood for them to have a fortress, its a fantasic place with pretty much no crime atall.

Ok rant over (ish).

Julz you are not having a great run at all!!!!!!!

You said that the poor dog was on concrete - I believe that there is legislation in place that prevents dogs from being housed 24/7 on concrete without respite? Might pay to enquire about the laws at the local pound before you ring the council and use some of the available literature to encourage your neighbours to exercise and socialise the dog.

In saying that - I do not envy you one bit. So many problems arise over the fence over our pets and this sounds like one of them brewing for you!

I guess your best outcome would be to hope the rent gets put up so high they have to move!

(ADD: can you discuss the issues with the real estate that they are under perhaps rather than starting a council feud?)

lol tell me about it!

I have absolutly no idea who they rent from, I doubt they would have permission for a dog though (hence never once been inside). I think there is a 1/2m x 2m max bit of soil/pebbles so I dont think the concrete legislation part would work. I think I am going to have to wait a while until the fence incident is forgotten and then call council about the barking (I cant mention the fence or they would know it was me). Seriously though, what sane dog would throw its body repeatadly against a colourbond fence for no reason other than boredom, they poor boy must have some serious mental issues from boredom. Oh and hes entire so can you imagine what he would do to poor Indie if he ever got through (he acts civil under the fence but doubt he would be like that face to face). Grrrrr think Ill move to an isolated island(with internet) lol.

My amstaff has gone through our colourbond fence twice.

He isn't bored.... he just likes to jump to try and see over the fence when ppl/dogs walk past.

Colourbond just isn't very strong at all.

I've got an electric fence now.... a few zap zaps was all he needed to get the message.

Train him not too...Someone that might be afraid of dogs will one day get startled & might report it.
