Jetty Posted January 16, 2011 Share Posted January 16, 2011 I finally have my boy Jet home. The yard at our new home wasn't suitable for him yet and several months later it is ready! He is at the back door whining as we speak but I know if I ignore him he will give up. I just wanted some of you savvy dog lovers to confirm I am doing the right thing. He isn't allowed inside on the carpet and most of the house is carpet apart from the 2 way bathroom and laundry so until I get a baby gate he needs to be shut in the laundry or crated when inside. He is used to being inside whenever he wants and also when outside having the company of another dog, so it is a big change for him. Ok my main concern is that there is a mutt next door who comes up to the fence and starts barking at Jet whenever we have him here. They can both fit there heads through the gate so it has me concerned a bit as I don't want them to harm each other. I am unsure if that will happen considering I don't know the neighbours dog. Now the next door neighbours dog insinuates the barking then Jet barks back. We were out there earlier with him on a lead near the fence and I was using the 'look' command and 'sit' command to make him focus on me, which worked most of the time. Next time I will make sure I have cheese his favourite treat but this time I was using verbal praise. If I continue this every day with him on the lead getting him to focus on me when the other dog is there would this be the right way to get him to ignore this dog or not worry about him in the future? I need him to be able to accept this so I can have him out there unsupervised if need in the future. Tomorrow we are at work so I am going to crate him while we are not here but I don't want to do that all the time if I can help it. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Even if the other dog is friendly it is not wise to let them have that sort of access to each other. Best to be on the safe side Good luck! Boronia Posted January 16, 2011 Share Posted January 16, 2011 I bought a few rolls of brushwood fencing, some from Mitre 10 (cheaper than Bunnings) and Crazy Clarks. I think I paid $25-$30 a roll for it...easy to put up...get a couple of packets of zippy ties while you are there. You can just pin it to the existing fence, It looks good and the dogs get pretty sick of trying to eye each other off through thy tiny gaps Also I have used bamboo blinds that I bought at garage sales or charity shops, you can usually pick them up for $5-$10. If they are long enough you can cut them in 1/2 horizontally, tie the ends off, and attach them to the fence. They look good with ferns or palms in pots in front of them. This dog seems friendly enough to us when our dog isn't there. He seems to have the same personality as our dog where he is really good around people but not good around new dogs. Lady Flying Furball Posted January 17, 2011 Share Posted January 17, 2011 If you block the fence hole up with something attached by wire (like the screening suggested or chicken wire etc), or in some fashion that can be removed when you go, I think you don't need to make a big deal about it with your landlord. They might fence fight or wind each other up. Oh no I hope not. If you don't want that to happen I suggest you find a way of permanently separating JJ from the place in the fence where they interact. It doesn't have to be flash.. a line of star pickets (make sure you put caps on them) and some chickenwire would probably do the trick. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
