I have a girl who has already had 2 litters both from natural matings. 7 pups each litter. Her last 2 attempts at getting in pup have been with the same dog. She has been prog tested and mated/AI 48 hours after ovulation each time. So far she has not concieved with this boy but he has in between times got other bitches in whelp. Do you think that they are just not compatible and if I try again I should go with another dog?

I am having the same issue Jane with a bitch....I am going to get his sperm tested and if all is good I think an AI as the first 2 times we tried natural matings and got nothing. Have you had her swabbed when she comes into season? Or do you put all your bitches on Clav anyway?

Get everything checked out but I would try another dog from different lines. There seems to be lethal genes that we know nothing about, except that some combinations just don't work. Sometimes bitches from one line will not conceive or will re-absorb the litter if bred to dogs from certain lines. Either partner bred to a different line is fine. This was one of the findings from my vet's phd on puppy mortality a few years back.

Yes, she's been swabbed, prog tested, his sperms been checked all by repro specialists. All good - just no pups. I was thinking that they just don't "click". It is interesting though that one of the inbetween litters was from her daughter.

You could try a surgical AI rather than a normal AI, so that the sperm is deposited right into the uterine horn.

Some years ago, a well known German import GSD was having major issues getting bitches pregnant, despite all of the boxes being ticked. Once surgical AI was used, there were no more issues. It appeared that some bitches were "allergic" to his semen and developed anit-bodies that destroyed his sperm.

Somthing to consider if you have your heart set on using this particular male.

I was going to suggest the above, as it happens in humans, dogs no doubt have some incompatible situations like listed above.
