Best Dog Bed For Golden Retriever Size From Australia

Hello,

We have a 5 month old Golden Retriever that has definitely outgrown the cat bed she still manages to curl herself up in. It's quite sweet to see but with half her body hanging over the sides it's time for a new bed.

At the moment she has a crate with a Snooza Futon inside it that we put her in at night. It sits in the living room. She is getting to the stage where I think I can trust her to be outside the crate at night and so we might move the crate to the spare room instead.

I think she really likes high sides to lean against and curl up in. Her crate is open all day but she chooses to use the cat bed when she has a choice during the day. We also have one of those trampoline style raised beds that she uses when she is outside.

We did purchase the Bono Fido waterproof bed which was great but it has these little snaps to keep the cushion in place and we only had it for one evening and one came off. This got me a little worried that the others might do the same and could be a choking hazard. Of course they could just be cut off but before I go back and buy another, does anyone have a suggestion for what they consider to be the perfect dog bed?

Thanks in advance

Personally I'd just let her sleep in the crate with the door open. It's a nice secure place for a dog, she can be closed in if needed (ie when you have visitors), it can be covered in winter to insulate and opened in summer, etc.

Otherwise I dont think you can go past a cot mattress for a larger breed. Good size, reasonable price, thick, comfy, supportive and you can always buy linen to fit which makes it easy to keep clean.

I actually thought about adding a cot bumper to the sides of the crate to give it that "feel". She just doesn't go in there unless I put her in there so if I were to leave the door open, she simply wouldn't go in. She would rather sprawl out on the tiles.

I have a large Kakadu dog bed for my Goldie. It has a base that has soft raised sides that the cushion fits into.

It is enormous- I could have gone a size smaller! Very comfy for Honey though.

She has only just started using it again- over summer she preferred to lie on the floorboards (or the couch when we weren't around, the naughty girl!).

Thanks for the tip. Is that the Island Bed (more rectangular) or the Oasis Bed (oval shaped)? And when you say you bought the large, do you mean the largest size ie. extra large? That's the one they recommend for Goldens on the site for the Island bed.

Yes, the largest one of the island beds.

I bought it without measuring Honey- if she stretched out she'd fill it but she usually smuggles into one end of it.

Considering it's almost as big as our couch, the next size down may have been a better fit.

If you can find one in a shop, take your dog & try both sizes.

The best dog bed I have bought was from a market - it is 1.5m x 1.2m and it comfortably fits 2 Rotties, but has at times managed to have 3 Rotties (adults) spilling off it. It's filled with memory foam off cuts and is still in great condition after almost 3 years and everyday use. It is the only bed the pups have never destroyed - been pissed on heaps but cover comes off and goes in the washing machine and I somehow manage to wash the bed in the hydrobath and throw it on top of the line to dry out on a hot day. Best $40 I have ever spent of a dog bed and would love to find another one just like it.

ZG you can take the covers off - they apparently now make both sections with a zipper. I just toss the whole thing in the wash (well in 2 loads). I wash the middle separately to the outside. I also tend to use a blanket over the middle bit so will wash that more often then I wash the rest.
