They do have three dogs they regularly hang out woth, but recently two of those moved away. When we go for a walk most of the time we don't see a single other dog (apart maybe from offlead dogs that aren't friendly). I don't feel that they need to be playing with other dogs, just hanging out a bit more with other dogs. So I thought maybe I could advertise to see if anyone in my suburb would be interested in meeting up for a weekly walk. But I can see that this could create its own problems, with people who maybe don't very friendly dogs, or don't control their dogs properly which could cause real trouble. On the other hand maybe it would all work out well. Dogs would get the opportunity to be around other dogs; maybe it would encourage some owners to walk their dogs. Actually I can imagine advertising and getting no responses at all. Anyway i just wanted to see what other people think of this idea, whether you think its likely to be a disaster, or whether there are ways I can make it work? wuffles Posted April 14, 2011 Share Posted April 14, 2011 You may as well give it a go There is a group of people in my suburb who walk through our local reserve at 6:30am every morning. I think our record number of dogs one morning was 12. I used to join them most mornings and it was lots of fun and all dogs got along well. As time has gone on, dogs have left and joined the group and now I find that unfortunately the dynamics don't really suit my dogs anymore (my younger girl gets bullied). I sometimes walk them the opposite way so they get to say hello to the other dogs and people on our way past then we go on our merry way afterwards Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

skip Posted April 15, 2011 Share Posted April 15, 2011 Good Idea. When in Orange it seemed we had a group of from 2 to 12 people who walked together every day. Then we started to get together on weekends and socialise as a group with and without dogs. I've left now but still keep in touch. Apparently there's a new set of walkers and the get togethers still go on. We had somebody advertise in the local dog training club newsletter. Reaches more dog mad people! If you want to join in the classes then do so, or do what I used to do and work my dogs on the ground when the others were in class and then socialise with them in the break. So long as you pay your ground fee and don't disrupt the classes you can do whatever you want with your dog on the grounds (walk, train or just sit and watch) while the others are there in class. I think your idea is a great one - let us know how you go. thanks, yeah I must admit, that I feel the club's rules make it especially hard for people with giant breeds. The club is filled with labs, goldens, borders and little terriers. It's only one hour a week. Would they let you use a martingale? no, I don't think martingales are allowed, but as I said its on at a time and day that makes it really hard for me to attend. Yes there is a bit of distance between us you've got a point there - maybe they do allow them I just remember being told flat collar, head collar or harness. I signed up to dog tree the other day and there are only four in my area and they haven't been to dog-tree for over a year - oh well. If anyone else joins up I'll be there waiting Anyway, I think I may have found a solution. Because last night on our walk a lady who I vaguely know came up and showed me her new whippet puppy. So once his vaccinations are all done, I might be able to have a walk with them. I think that's how I'm going to approach it.
