A dingo pup found alone in the backyard of a Victorian property has been revealed as an endangered breed.
'Wandi' was heard crying in the garden of a property at Wandiligong, near Bright, in August this year. It is thought to have been dropped by an eagle, ABC News reports.
Residents initially thought the animal was a fox or dog and looked after it for a day before taking it to the Alpine Animal Hospital.
"He had a mark on his back (from what is believed to be an eagle's claws) and there were no other pups nearby," Veterinarian Dr Bec Day said.
The animal hospital conducted a DNA test on the eight to 10-week-old pup to determine its breed.
While waiting for the results 'Wandi' was moved to the Australian Dingo Foundation's sanctuary which breeds pure dingoes.
"The DNA testing takes a couple of weeks, so we've just had to tread water. He was introduced to the sanctuary during that time," Dr Day said.
"And now that the results are back he can be used as part of their breeding program."
Australian Dingo Foundation director Lyn Watson told ABC there are three types of dingos in Australia , a tropical breed from the Kimberley, inland dingoes in central Australia and the alpine dingo.

He's a right cute little bugger to boot.
