Claire Bear
Just looking at the ANKC 2024 registration numbers with 48,820 recorded. This is a drop from 69,335 recorded in 2018. I tried to find the estimated number of puppies bred in 2024, it somewhere between 500,000 and 550,000. This means ANKC members are now breeding less than 10% of puppies sold in Australia. ANKC membership numbers keep falling, now sitting at 27,000 in 2024. Houston, I don’t think we have a problem. I know we have a problem!

Claire Bear
What is even more hilarious is the attitude of some ANKC breeders towards the general public and “puppy buyers”. It reeks of elitism and driving away the general public at a faster rate. With things like detailed complicated contracts, limited registration, desexing at 8 weeks and co-ownership also off-putting. It’s like viewing every puppy buyer as an aspirational puppy farmer or BYB. Is desexing at 8 weeks in the best interest of the puppy or breeder? Even tubal ligation on a female puppy will produce adhesions , guaranteeing when a full Spey needs to be done later it will be more complicated. To top it off vet surgery doesn’t commonly use laparoscopic techniques , it’s not widely available and probably cost prohibitive. No wonder “adopt don’t shop” and rescuing dogs is gaining popularity. The majority of dogs in my middle class neighbourhood are oodles. I don’t blame them for buying a cross breed poodle, they are readily available. The general public aren’t going to wait years for the occasional litter bred by ANKC breeders.
asal
When I bred cavaliers over a decade ago I heard people begin crying when I said I would sell them a puppy on main register. The rot has been going on for decade's treating puppy buyers as potential criminals is a major public perception disaster ANKC members vilify each other mercilessly , the ongoing toxicology did nothing positive towards either public or members respect for each other. When I joined in the 70's newbies were welcomed to the dog world family, encouraged to become members, to come to shows, mentored and encouraged. Once the change began in the 80's from welcoming to suspicion, IE...is this person an unethical puppy farmer we need purging from the ANKC to preserve our reputation? The switch began slowly but the speed gain had many beginning to question do I want to to be a member of this back stabbing group By 1999 the assumption breeder members were unethical puppy farmer's had even spread to the way staff at the office treated us at the desk, come in to report a litter registration was incorrect, ie long coat chi puppy/puppies registered as short coat, or vice versa, instantly told, your fault, filled out registration wrong, have to pay fine to correct registration, in one instance every pup in the litter,, so quite a hefty fine. As I had submitted it in writing I asked for my original litter registration form. Even after they fond it, still wanted to fine me, even though it was filled out stating long coat registration on front page. The excuse being l hadn't rewritten that on back of page under the names and chip no. Even though there is no box for that on on back page. No kidding. Get told the computer automatically register 's the puppies mother's coat length to them (mum was a smooth coat) Since the staff entered the details from the handwritten form how can the computer be "automatically" filling in their coat length? Only after appealing to the office secretary for what was obviously a staff error could this be corrected without me being fined. The disrespectful attitude and behaviour made any contact unpleasant. As for all the board we noticed the same suspicion attitude, breeder members possibly puppy farmer's. Many were so offended began considering resign, many did and still do. Around this time some decided to form another breed registration where members could feel respected not suspected and in 2007 the MDBA came into being. As for how breeders were treating the public wanting a pedigree pup was changing to suspicion instead of welcome... Public relations disaster in the making, getting the garden gnome so offside (until then an ANKC member and breeder himself) took the issue to the media where he went to recommending X breds as the far better choice. Been continuing downhill fall than slide ever since. As for the limit registration only dead end kennels being the only ethical and responsible by making sure none of their puppies could fall into the hands of a puppy farmer.... Intimating any who do sell on main aren't ethical.. Leading to mass sterilisation of baby puppies to be doubly sure couldn't happen hasn't been a PR winner Edited 3 hours ago by asal
