Lucinda And Oscar

Bless her, ill as she is and still wants to look after everyone else - typical female...

Hope she had a great weekend.

A question:

Does Lucinda still have mast cell tumours and does she get new ones?

I ask because Ollie has a couple more lumps - I am not getting them tested, I don't want to know. I believe that they are tumours as they look and feel the same as the ones that were removed and the one that was tested and confirmed a while ago.

TIA

Jodie

Jodie,

Yep Lucinda does have other lumps. And another one appeared this past week <sigh>

I have chosen not to get them aspirated as I dont want her to end up looking like a patchwork dog..and the first tumour removal did not get clean margins and i believe that stress is really something to avoid.

The sweet lady is not too bad at the moment. Looks a bit bedraggled but otherwise coping quite well.

Sending Ollie boy heaps of hugs and tickles.

Helen

It must be difficult (to say the least), each time a new bump raises it's ugly head :mad

Please excuse the hi-jack Helen, but could you please give me an idea on what a MCT looks like / feels like because after much googling, I cannot get a good idea on size, shape or colour :mad

All 3 of my dogs have one new "lump" each at the moment and although the vet looked at my as if I was a martian, I'd just like to ensure they are not those horrible things you and Jodie are dealing with...

On my kids they are tiny hard lumps... One is almost like a shiny red wort (as hard as stone), the other two are small round blackish, flatish bumps under the skin... The vet squeezed each one in trying to "make it pop" and decided that there was nothing in there

A very brief rundown of your experience would be great although I'm sure my paranoïa is getting the better of me...

Big hugs to both yourself and the beautifully bedraggled Lucinda :mad

Hi pampa,

Ollie had one on his back toe that looked like a wart but became red and inflamed because he kept licking it - mast cell grade 2...

Ollie had a lump on his right rump - this was under the skin but felt like a pea that was a few layers of skin down (if that makes sense) - mast cell grade 2... The others are all like this one

They can take quite a few different forms, from what my vet tells me... Knowing what I know now - I would test every lump and bump as soon as I found it (fine needle aspiration)... Mast cell cancer is one that if caught early (grade 1), it is curable... Unfortunately once it turns up in multiple sites, it is not... It has also been found in Ollies lymph system, so we know it is on the move around his body...

As our lovely Lucinda has more than one lump, I would assume it is in her lymph system and moving around her body...

But a true testament to fighting spirit, both of our beloved pooches are still here... Lucinda's story is an inspiration to me... I know that I can have Ollie with me for much longer than originally diagnosed by the specialists...

Cheers

Jodie

Excuse me Lucinda & Helen and thank you Jodie

A suspect lump (red and wort-like) has come up on her lip and is very hard, as mentioned above... The vet is not worried in the least but I'm not so sure, especially considering what you say here, Jodie... I'm going in to the vet's on Thursday for blood tests so I'm wondering whether he could do a fine needle biopsy at the same time ? Can this be done without an anaesthetic or must they be put under to aspire ???

Here is a photo of her lump...

Sorry again for Hi-jacking here but I'm quite worried and I know you people know more than anywhere else :mad

(BTW, just to remind you, she's been on Prednisone for over a month now and the lump hasn't shrunk... on the contrary, it seems to have grown  My girl is only 4 years old)

The problem with MCTs is that they actually appear in many different ways. Lucindas original tumour as a fastgrowing limp. Within 10 days it was the size and shape of a large goose egg, and inflamed. The second suspicious lump( on her back) is about the size of a small pea and bluish in clours, the third lump( on her chest near the original site) has the appearance of a lump of normal skin.

BTW: Pampa that pic look like a histiocytoma

They can appear wart like, firm pink lumps etc. That have been referred to as "the great pretenders". Hence the diagnosis is by fine needle aspirate or excision and lab analysis.

we need to remember that mostly a lump is just a lump.

here is a good link to various cutaneous tumours with descriptions and photos. So those of us who are lump phobic- such as myself- can spend every second of every day panicking about lumps. I will add that Lucindas lump did not ressemble any of the mcts shown here in the vetmed link.

How is the angel today? Hope she is well...

The boofer has just come home from a romp in the park with all the falling leaves - he acts like a puppy when the leaves fall on him, he tries to catch them (crazy guy)...

pampa, that lump is not unlike the one that Ollie had on his back toe. But, not all lumps are created equal and it is probably nothing at all. In saying that, I personally would still request a fine needle aspiration of the lump... But I am now paranoid about dogs and lumps - goes with the territory I guess...

Helen, do you have more pics of Lucinda? If you do, I would love to see some...

One of my clients has Maremma's, they live in the chook shed and protect the chickens. They are truely beautiful dogs...

Oh,Helen, your photos / website are magnificent  It's definately "Helens Haven" or more exactly, "Helen's Heaven"... Superb !

I'm glad to hear Lucinda is "not too bad" at the moment, but I'm looking forward to you telling us she's "good"...

Thank you (AGAIN  ) for all the info and photos on MCT and I'm now feeling so much better about our lumps

Wonderful news Jodie  I guess this means that the Chemo didn't set him back this time

I am sure that Lucinda is the same as Ollie, they don't even acknowledge that they are sick most of the time...

There is usually a 4 to 7 day window where, if he is going to get ill, that is when it will happen... He had chemo last Friday, so we are up to day 4 now... But all is well in the Ollie dog house...

Now that is the truth....she still thinks shes got it!

A few months ago, when Keisha was still here the two of them had a dust up. I grabbed keisha by the tail and pulled her away and Lucinda obviously thought" Just hang on tight to the b***h and I'll finish her off. " I had a terrible time getting my husband to do anything but stand there looking shocked.

Lucinda demands RESPECT! and in capitals too. LOL.
