Seita Posted April 24, 2006 Share Posted April 24, 2006 Can anyone recommend an obedience club in brisbane, prefferably near the city (I live in Kangaroo Point) or on the southside that trains on a monday, tuesday or wednesday night? Obedience Dog Club of Brisbane train at Oxley, and Metroplitan train at Chermside, so there's a fair difference between them. Let us know which one you are closest to. Seita Posted April 27, 2006 Author Share Posted April 27, 2006 Im in Kangaroo Point, so pretty much the city so they are both about equal distance from me... i think Oxley would be closest taking traffic into consideration but Brisbane Obedience Club trains on friday nights or sunday mornings both aren't real good for me! I'm going to go over to the Gap this saturday mornign to look at Bonney's (Val Bonney's school) as I trialled under her a few years back with a previous dog and Ive been told shes a really good trainer. gsdog2 Posted April 27, 2006 Share Posted April 27, 2006 Can you let us know how you go at Bonney's? I've heard a lot about her classes, and I have trialed under her a number of times. When i emailed her she replied and told me to ask for her when i get there so I thought that was pretty cool! Yeh she is a pretty good judge. Tilly Posted May 1, 2006 Share Posted May 1, 2006 I would not recommend the Obedience Dog Club of Brisbane at Oxley. I took my 4 month old GSD there for one night only. That night we arrived all excited, my boy was all excited about lots of other doggies to play with. I didn't get too close and stood away from the group (was warned to not get too close to dogs that were pegged out). My boy got a little excited and while sitting beside me he gave an excited little yap. I immediately corrected him but the "president" rushed over and screamed "no" in his face and slapped him on the nose while reaching for his lead to give him a sharp correction. I was totally stunned and should have walked away immediately but this was my first experience of an "obedience club". That night for our lesson, we walked around and around in circles with the pups healing, sitting and dropping. After about an hour or so my boy was getting very tired and just wanted to lay down. He would lay down when he should have been sitting and was loosing focus (an hour is just too long for his first night of "formal" training). The instructor just demanded I continue walking and drag him if necessary. I just picked my boy up and left. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Maybe you could try another club or private trainer, it's just a matter of finding the right one for your needs. Ring first and ask what they do in their training and maybe go along and have a look first before taking your GSD. I have had a number of shepherds and took them all training which I have thoroughly enjoyed and so have my dogs. You also get to make some lifelong friends. My GSD boy is now a fully trained security dog. I took him to various "obedience clubs" for socialisation and basic training but didn't find a single one that I could recommend - which I think is really sad. Seita Posted May 2, 2006 Author Share Posted May 2, 2006 Well I went out to Bonney's on Saturday, the training was very much like what I've been used to in the past, Val was really nice to talk to and there were some really incredible handlers out there, unfortunately because it is such a good school it also costs a little beyond my poor student price range! When I get my puppy (hopefully in the next 6 months) I will probably fork out the money to go there just because I'm hoping to trial the pup quite competitively but this current dog is a rescue who really only needs some socialisation and some basic training, so I've decided to train her myself (i'm an old obedience instructor, so i guess i can do it!!! ).
