Witzend Farm - Staffordshire Breeders South Australia

I know Cindie personally and can confirm she is no longer breeding. -
1080 is horrible. So are livestock deaths from dog attacks. I’d love to think that guardian dogs could prevent the suffering but I’ve yet to be convinced that it is a widely applicable solution. It would be interesting to know whether or not the farmers in your region have opted against guardian dogs for well-considered reasons.

My sister had 2 of them for years on her sheep (for wool) and goat (for meat export) farm in NSW. You would rarely see them up near the house unless the flock had come up that close. There was a fenced yard off the house yard where the vehicles and hay was stored. There was also a chicken run off the back of the big storage shed. They got a Maremma for there. Certainly not as big a roam space as the livestock and he interacted with a lot more humans, but there were no issues. He just hung out with his chickens. But they didn't just buy 'a dog' - they bought one specific for purpose from a skilled breeder.

When would it make sense to get a livestock guardian dog?
Dogsfevr replied to DogsAndTheMob's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think with the right owner & very much the key right owner a breed can thrive not doing its job if many other avenues are fulfilled . On the flipside when we where on the Gundog club we got weekly emails from people looking for guidaince to rehome there working Cocker Spaniels as they where to active to live with, where going bonkers in an apartment life etc . People brought them because they had less coat so grooming would be easier Lack of common sense applies buying any dog & theres alot out there -

Perhaps the worst thing that can happen to a breed is for it to appear in a movie, or an ad, or be owned by a celebrity, or should that be appear in a game in these times. I think that happened to Maremmas with the movie Oddball. I once found an Anatolian who was a few suburbs away from his home. A Turkish family owned him, perhaps when they were children some relatives had some Anatolians. - Last week

Hi - no experience here, but I agree with what you said . Our local town has a few maremmas - they are often listed as missing/escaped /found wandering . I suspect they are being kept as you said, for a half dozen sheep - or as pets and are bored/unsettled. A large poultry farm has them, and they do well - they have a HUGE flock to guard, decent fencing, and seem to be very effective against foxes/roaming dogs. Out where we are no one has them , everyone uses 1080

I totally understand your fed up, it must be very difficult to manage on a daily basis. Jilly seems like an adorable little dog, I hope she finds a family to match soon. Tutuapp

Hi all, Trying to locate this breeder, if they are even still around? Googling shows the hobby farm sold in 2024.. In 2016 I brought a puppy into my life from Witzend who was my greatest mate and the best dog in the world.. We recently lost him to Pulmonary Fibrosis. If Witzend still exist, im looking to touch base to see if any of his blood line is still going. Cheers

Should our puppy have arrived with his Registration Papers????
ellz replied to DonnaMariee's topic in General Dog Discussion
Just a heads up, not condoning or condemning, just mentioning……a friend of mine recently waited for nearly 4 months for her registration papers due entirely to DNA testing taking an inexplicably long time to process. -

Why Cattle Dogs have such a bad reputation with farmers?
asal replied to Guil's topic in General Dog Discussion
This information is for everyone else who doesn't have their own stock Whatever dogs or horses or motorbikes bring them in has nothing to do with the flavour of the meat, native pasture, herbal tint, lot fed different , too long between sale yard and slaughter, changes flavour and texture , stressed even more before slaughter great changes.... None good. Best is home kill, second best, straight to slaughter facility and done that day. Taste and tenderness way better than you would ever find at a butcher or supermarket -
ACD job losses in favour of the English Border Collie
Guil replied to Guil's topic in General Dog Discussion
One more post here as the preview didn't came through yesterday. Note: All surrounding individuals joined up as well. Pay attention to his body language, when he's implying "wait a sec", and comes back to us shortly leaving space for that one on the right handside, then returns to work once it's at a safe distance from its mates? -
Here is a video of my bluey moving cows out of the way in state forest Qld, let me know what in his method could be flagged by a professional Aussie farmer? It's hard for us to get work like at all. Cattle dogs seem to have a bad reputation for some reasons I'm unaware. Note: All surrounding individuals joined up as well. Pay attention to his body language, when he's implying "wait a sec", and comes back to us shortly leaving space for that one on the right handside, then returns to work once it's at a safe distance from its mates? You guys reckon Bored Collies help make better steaks? How can I frame a letter to a farmer to explain that my handling is enough? Thanks.
